The prosecutor's office is flagging the need for more awareness and reform.

Johnson told the KC BOPC on Tuesday morning about a joint effort among prosecutors across the state.

Their efforts involve educating the community about when deadly force is justified and connecting with legislators ahead of the 2027 legislative session.

"More people in our community are using force, very often deadly, and feeling justified in doing so," Johnson said. "It is not our goal to remove anyone's guns from their home or possession. We are just trying to limit instances in which deadly force is justified in our community."

A judge has dismissed the second-degree murder charge against a man who admitted shooting and killing Tampa DJ Dedrick Sykes during a traffic confrontation in Ybor City.

The judge ruled Joel Moreno Cobo acted in self-defense under Floridas Stand Your Ground law when he shot Sykes, known professionally as DJ Shy Guy, in November 2025.

Moreno Cobo said he feared for himself, his girlfriend and his young child as Sykes approached his vehicle. He testified that Sykes came within inches of his window and that he could no longer see Sykes hands. Sykes was unarmed.

The ruling grants Moreno Cobo immunity from prosecution, meaning the case will not go before a jury.

According to Goldens attorneys, the couple began arguing after their baby shower on Oct. 23, 2022, over who would use a microwave. They say Golden knocked a plate of food out of Sidneys hands before he repeatedly slammed her head against the counter and refrigerator and continued attacking her.

The defense said Sidneys response prompted Golden to grab a knife and stab him in the leg. The knife pierced his femoral artery, and Sidney later died at a hospital.

The gun-control organization March For Our Lives sent an email fundraiser announcing plans to pass a weapons ban in New Jersey, according to screenshots posted on social media.

The group, founded by survivors of the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, sought donations to support a weapons ban in New Jersey, according to the screenshots posted Monday. The group used the term weapons of war in the message, hinting that the target might be so-called assault weapons.

Last week, BamaCarry, Alabama's largest state-based organization devoted to supporting the Second Amendment, launched a petition at DeFlock Alabama to allow residents to send a message to their lawmakers to ban Flock Safety cameras as a way to defend Second Amendment rights.

That petition, which is primarily spreading through word of mouth, has already gathered nearly 2,000 signatures.

"In less than a week, with very little promotion, nearly 2,000 Alabamians have already signed our petition opposing Flock cameras," Taylor Rhodes, BamaCarry vice president, told 1819 News.

A federal judge heard arguments on Monday about the constitutionality of a 2023 Colorado law that generally imposes a three-day waiting period on firearm purchases after the initiation of a background check.

The test that the U.S. Supreme Courtcreated in 2022 for assessing firearm regulations compliance with the Second Amendment occurs in two phases. Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach today issued guidance to Kansans seeking to purchase suppressors or short-barreled shotguns in the wake of a recent federal court decision.

On August 5, Kobach and a coalition of 14 other states and a group of private associations and businesses prevailed in a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). In a landmark victory, the court issued a preliminary injunction declaring that certain elements of the National Firearms Act are unconstitutional and prohibiting the ATF from imposing registration requirements on particular purchasers of suppressors, short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns.

I am in full support of strict gun regulations, a registry system where every single gun, bullet and augment is stamped and can be traced back to an owner and even repealing the Second Amendment, which would make gun ownership a privilege in this country. However, these beliefs are unlikely to be codified into law and until then, these weapons will be legal.

If they are, then I will absolutely be an owner of one. There is no chance I am sitting back and letting people like my neighbor or any of the 10,000 people at the Jan. 6 riots have weapons like that while I have nothing.

A federal judge in Massachusetts allowed the states restrictions on gun ownership by adults under the age of 21 to stand Friday.

Multiple pro-Second Amendment organizations sued Massachusetts over its refusal to grant 18-to-20-year-old adults a License to Carry that would allow them to own handguns and semiautomatic long guns in February 2025. In his 23-page ruling, United States District Judge George A. OToole, Jr., a Clinton appointee, of the District of Massachusetts said that restrictions on minors owning firearms rendered the states law constitutional.

Colorado has spent more than a generation treating the Second Amendment as a public-policy question.

That is the first mistake.

The Bill of Rights does not identify subjects upon which government may act whenever legislators believe their intentions are sufficiently benevolent. It identifies areas in which governmental power is constrained. The distinction is fundamental. A constitutional right does not exist at the pleasure of a legislative majority, nor does its force rise and fall with polling, tragedy, political fashion, or the confidence of public officials in their own judgment.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed Wednesday that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been hit with a ransomware attack.

A DOJ spokesperson confirmed the attack when reached by the Daily Caller News Foundation for comment about a social media post from Gun Owners of America regarding the situation, which raised concerns about the potential compromise of gun owners information. The Russian cybergang Qilin claimed responsibility for the attack on the ATF, CyberNews reported.

The Trump administration told a senior member of Congress it had no proof showing that a microstamping mandate would make firearms more traceable.

Republican Rep. Brian Babin of Texas, who chairs the House Science Committee, asked the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) to answer questions about the reliability, durability, manufacturing consistency and forensic utility of microstamping the use of a device to leave an identifiable series of marks on a bullet cartridge in a February 2025 letter to the agency. NIST sent its response to Babin in the form of a seven-page letter dated August 12.

A Pennsylvania lawmaker declared his intention to pass new regulations targeting gun stores in the state, according to a memo released Monday.

Democratic Pennsylvania state Rep. Christopher Rabb said the Establishing the Firearms Dealer Accountability and Modernization Act would seek to address gun violence through the supply side in the memo seeking co-sponsors for the legislation. Rabb decried the fact that there were over 3,000 federally-licensed dealers (FFLs) in the state.

Pennsylvania has nearly seven times as many licensed gun dealers as Starbucks locations. It has more gun dealers than there are ATF special agents in the entire country, Rabb wrote.
