"If a man is known by his enemies as much as his friends, then I am richer today than I was last week. The anti-liberty, anti-firearm Brady Bunch, it seems, has noticed my little letter to the Capitol Times of Madison, Wisconsin -- where even the trees lean hard to the left. It is, they say, an example of 'bunker paranoia,' describing it as a 'crackpot's rant,' 'morally degenerate,' 'hyperbole from a possibly unstable individual,' and my favorite, 'immoral or . . . street-corner gibberish uttered by one who wears a tinfoil hat.' ..." ... |

"Like a lot of people down here in Texas, I keep a gun close at hand. This usually means one in my vehicle and one on my person. I've kept one in my vehicle for nearly two decades and one on my person since 1998, when I got my first concealed carry permit. It's hard to beat the protection that my concealed carry permit affords my family and friends, even if they aren't armed. The fact that I am armed means they are safer when with me whether they realize it or not; and everything from annual FBI crime numbers to state-by-state statistics prove this to be so."
"However, when I drive outside the borders of Texas, I have to be careful. In many other states, I cannot keep a loaded gun in the car ..." ... |

"Chicago, Ill. Dr. Blaine Ramsay, 72, opened the door to his consulting room late at night to three visitors, two men and a woman. One of the three said, 'This is a stick-up,' and pushed Dr. Ramsay back into a chair. They demanded money, ordered Dr. Ramsay to take his hands out of his pockets and get busy. Dr. Ramsay did. He hauled a .38 caliber revolver out of his pocket and started shooting. One of the men, an ex-convict, fell, badly wounded; the other man and the woman fled. This is not Dr. Ramsay's first experience in such matters. In 1955, he killed another ex-convict who tried to hold him up in his office. Hold-up men should leave Dr. Ramsay alone, go to New York where there's less chance of encountering an armed victim." ... |

"The Supreme Court ruled in June that provisions of Washington, D.C.'s gun laws are unconstitutional. Unfortunately, the city has responded with new regulations that are a flagrant attempt to circumvent the court's decision."
"It's time for Congress to use the power granted to it in the Constitution to 'exercise exclusive legislation' in the District and uphold its residents' constitutional rights. It can do so by passing the District of Columbia Personal Protection Act now pending in Congress, with a few adjustments. This bill, introduced on July 31 with 57 cosponsors, would prevent D.C. from passing regulations that discourage the private lawful use of firearms or otherwise suppress residents' Second Amendment rights. ..." ... |

"Can the local government of Washington, D.C. thumb its nose at a constitutional decision of the United States Supreme Court and get away with it?"
"'That,' says right to self-defense advocate John M. Snyder, 'is the question underlying a constitutional crisis brewing now in our Nation's Capital. It's up to Congress to nip this crisis in the bud before its effects spread to a multiplicity of locales and involve a wide range of public issues.'"
"'The nexus of the burgeoning constitutional crisis,' says Snyder, 'was the refusal of officials of the local Washington, D.C. government to accept fully the June decision of the Supreme Court in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.'" ... |

"Democrats have decided to continue to be the party of gun control. Here’s a link to the draft party platform for ‘08 from August 7:""Firearms"
"We recognize that the right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ continued Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation, but we know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact and enforce common-sense laws and improvements, like closing the gun show loophole, improving our background check system and reinstating the assault weapons ban, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals ..." ...

"Offering the first significant gun legislation since the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling on the District of Columbia v. Heller, (the landmark case outlining the legality of gun laws) Representative Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4) has introduced a commonsense bill that tightens the criminal background check system by requiring background checks for all gun store employees and dealers."
"These background checks would likely be conducted through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and would ensure that people selling guns are not prohibited from buying guns because they don't meet the legal guidelines and criteria." ... |

"The Transportation Security Administration may allow airports to ban firearms from terminals, parking lots, roads and other airport areas where many states currently allow passengers to carry lethal weapons."
"Airport officials and lawmakers are watching closely as the TSA weighs a request by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to modify its security program to impose an airportwide ban on guns. It is the first such request to TSA from an airport." ...
"The TSA is 'trying to work through some complex legal issues,' said spokesman White. He gave no timetable for a decision. Courts may ultimately decide whether an airport can override state law and prohibit guns by adding a ban to its security program, Chambers said." |

A Chicago police officer has been suspended for 15 months for demanding free coffee and baked goods from six different Starbucks. Officer Barbara Nevers, a 14-year veteran, has also been ordered to undergo counseling.
The Police Board ruled in May that 55-year-old Nevers intimidated Starbucks employees by screaming at them and flashing her badge, handcuffs or gun when they wanted her to pay. The board released its findings Thursday.
Nevers' attorney says her client never used her job to demand coffee. She says some coffeehouses gave it to her for free because she was an officer. |
