This is the election season when politicians will say anything to get more campaign cash. A particularly revolting example of legislating for dollars is coming from California. This proposed law teaches us a lot about what is wrong with our present politics, and what is wrong with our politicians. A California legislator wants to force gun owners to pay for government regulations. The legislation requires sheriffs and police chiefs charge for their expenses when they issue a concealed carry permit.
Think about that for a minute. Gun owners will pay the costs incurred by a government monopoly to issue a government mandated permission slip. |

In Garner, Iowa, a young boy has died after an apparently accidental shooting at a firing range.
Police say in a news release that the 10 year old, of Clear Lake, suffered a head wound Sunday afternoon from a pellet gun at the Garner shooting range.
The Garner City Administrator said Wednesday that the boy and a younger brother went to the range with their grandfather. He said exactly what occurred at the range Sunday remains unclear, but no charges are expected to be filed. |

Many children live in houses with guns, but pediatricians often don’t feel comfortable discussing gun safety with parents — even though most parents say they would welcome that conversation.
That’s a key finding from a study published Wednesday in the Journal of Pediatrics. It comes as some state legislatures and doctors tussle over proposals restricting what doctors can say to patients about firearms, and as doctor groups increasingly push physicians to treat gun violence as a public health concern. |

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is introducing another bill aimed at preventing suspected terrorists from buying weapons, this time with a 10-year look-back provision on anyone who had previously been investigated.
The bill, dubbed the Terror Intelligence Improvement Act, would require federal agencies to coordinate efforts so that anyone who has been investigated for terrorism by any federal agency in the past decade would be flagged if he or she tries to buy a gun or explosive. There would then be a three-day delay on that purchase while federal authorities determine whether to go to court to seek a permanent injunction against the purchase. |

These words, which compose the Second Amendment, were adopted as part of the Bill of Rights in 1791, and their meaning has been hotly debated ever since. In recent years, the Second Amendment has been brought to the forefront of American concern by multiple mass shootings, the most recent of which occurred in an Orlando, Florida night club. These tragic incidents have caused the debate over the issue of gun control to escalate. Righteous job, patriots!
In response to the gun control agenda’s planned outrage via the Twitterverse, gun owners, Constitutionalists, Second Amendment defenders and patriots took to the social media platform to drown out their ignorant narrative and post their own message of why they #GunVote.
Not only did they shut down the gun control efforts, there were some darn good tweets that made the “Gun Vote” hashtag trend third in the nation! |

On September 14 Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12) called on the Republican-led House to allow a “gun vote” on new versions of old controls that Democrats have been pushing for years.
In hopes of gaining traction, Pelosi presented the vote as a way to do something for children.
She tweeted, “House GOP, give us a gun vote. What are you afraid of?” She ended the tweet with “#gunviolence #doyourjob.” |

That being said, I have long admired former Massachusetts governor William Weld, the ex-Republican who has joined fellow ex–Republican governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson on the Libertarian ticket. I don’t admire him enough to vote for him: His ignorant and barbaric stance on abortion alone is disqualifying, but add to it his lamentably limp-wristed attitude toward the Second Amendment and his contribution to the Libertarian party’s shockingly gutless new consensus on the matter of religious freedom and you have one half of a ticket that would not even merit serious consideration if not for . . . everybody else running for president and vice president in 2016. |

A South Carolina Senate subcommittee of five sitting senators will hold a public hearing Thursday at Greenville County Square about gun issues.
The forum has no specific design or agenda other than to hear from residents on issues related to guns in South Carolina. Senators expect to hear from a variety of residents with varying positions on guns, including advocates for Second Amendment rights, victims of domestic violence and other crimes or those who are for or against extending the waiting period for background checks when purchasing a gun in South Carolina, said Sen. Gerald Malloy, the subcommittee’s chairman. |

The Centers for Disease Control confirmed that Tennessee ranks 1st in accidental gun deaths. That’s based on statistics that show 19 fatal shootings in 2013, that jumped to 105 incidents in 2014. There’s no federal database tracking these incidents and accidental shootings are generally under reported.
John Martin says it still a matter of required training.
“There is no in place that mandates that you go through a gun-safety class before you can buy a gun. Personally, I think it..it doesn’t infringe on your 2nd amendment rights..for you to at least be exposed to a safety class, but you’re not,” says Martin.

The man killed was identified by authorities as Anthony James Lawson, 40, of 3411 Charing Cross Road, of Augusta. He was shot at a residence in the 2400 block of Wrightsboro Road and pronounced dead at 3:38 a.m., Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said.
The resident, Joseph Patterson, 69, told sheriff’s investigators that Lawson attempted to kick open the front door of the home and then pushed a window air conditioner out to get inside. Patterson then shot Lawson with a handgun, according to a sheriff’s office news release. |

A yes vote on Question 3 in November would do a simple thing: establish in Maine law a requirement for background checks of gun buyers making private purchases within Maine. The law’s provisions would be virtually identical to those presently in federal statute applicable to purchases made from licensed gun dealers. Buyer and seller would go to a licensed dealer to obtain the background check. There are numerous, readily accessible licensed dealers, and the process is usually completed within minutes. Transfers between family members and in other special circumstances would be exempt.

A Wal-Mart employee shot and killed a man who apparently attempted to rob him early Wednesday in the parking lot outside the store near University Drive and Oakland Park Boulevard, police said.
"Investigators believe this was an attempted robbery and the employee fired in self-defense," said Sunrise Police Officer Chris Piper.
Piper said the employee, who may have gone out to his car during a break on the overnight shift, "was approached by unknown male, armed with handgun" in the parking lot of the 24-hour store at 3306 N. University Drive.
"He points the weapon at the employee, and there is an exchange of words," Piper said. "The Wal-Mart employee, who has a permit, pulls out a weapon and fires multiple rounds." |

For the second time Wednesday, Republicans turned to a parliamentary maneuver to kill a Democratic filibuster and force a vote on a bill, this time to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a bill eliminating training and permit requirements to carry a concealed gun in public.
The maneuver, known as “calling the previous question,” was once rarely used — only five times in the Senate from 1970 to 2001, when Republicans captured the majority. But it’s now been used five times since 2014, including three times this year.
After shutting down debate Wednesday, the Senate voted to override the governor’s veto on a 24-6 party line vote. The bill moved to the House, where it was quickly approved 112-41.
It becomes law in 30 days. |

The National Rifle Association Wednesday began a new round of TV ads against Democratic Senate candidate Deborah Ross, bringing to $3 million its investment on behalf of Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr.
An NRA spokeswoman said the ads began on stations in Charlotte, Greensboro and Wilmington.
In the ad, a narrator says while Ross talks about individual freedom, “as a legislator, Ross voted against personal liberty.”
“Ross voted for gun control,” the ad continues. “Ross opposed your right to self-defense. The press said Ross voted against almost all legislation on firearms.”

Groups on both sides of a ballot initiative to expand background checks on gun sales are buying television airtime and mobilizing their bases ahead of what could be one of the costliest referendum campaigns in Maine history.
The organization Mainers for Responsible Gun Ownership has reserved roughly $2 million in commercial slots on television stations statewide between Labor Day and Election Day. On Wednesday, the group launched its second television ad – featuring former U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby – in support of the initiative to require criminal history background checks for most private gun sales and gun transfers in Maine. |

Historically, the Second Amendment has not always been applied equally to all races. In fact, gun control laws were often used to prevent blacks from arming themselves against whites.
In Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America, UCLA law professor Adam Winkler, said Alabama authorities denied Martin Luther King Jr.'s request for a conceal carry permit even after his house was firebombed. Nonetheless, during the Jim Crow era, blacks viewed local law enforcement and the Klan as one in the same and took up arms for self-protection. |
