No charges will be filed against a Gaston man for his involvement in a fatal stabbing at a Meadowfield Road home Thursday. Investigators from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department consulted with prosecutors from the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office and determined 21-year-old Joshua Rossman acted in self-defense during an altercation with 19-year-old Rayshawn Porterfield. A Prescott lawmaker is proposing changes in state law designed to protect the right of Arizonans to keep their weapons no matter what a future Congress decides. But the attorney who crafted it for Republican Rep. David Stringer said that still won’t let Arizonans keep their “bump stocks” if the federal government declares them illegal. The legislation spells out the kind of weapons that the state believes are necessary for those who are members of the state militia. Existing Arizona law already says that automatically includes all “able-bodied citizens of the state” between 18 and 45. |

At this shooting range in central Nebraska, the sound of bullets hitting steel targets is ringing out on a cold fall morning. And a few things look out of place here. There's an old replica jail, a train depot and a hangman's gallows that could be from a Western movie backlot. And then when you ask people their names, you may get a funny answer. |

As the country looks ahead with hopes that the New Year will be better than the past 12 months, anti-gunners will renew their agenda for stricter gun laws and they will be using the inexplicable attacks in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs to energize their arguments.
Second Amendment activists should keep an eye on Washington State, where anti-gun Attorney General Bob Ferguson will reportedly renew his push to ban so-called “assault weapons” and original capacity magazines. |

With 2017 quickly drawing to a close, Breitbart News thought the timing right to review the top 25 defensive gun uses (DGUs) of 2017. And while it must be noted that these 25 examples are only a smidgen of the hundreds of thousands of DGUs that occur each year–see the academic work of Florida State University’s Gary Kleck–they nonetheless present a well-rounded summation of the various locations and circumstances in which law-abiding citizens use guns to defend their own lives and the lives of others. |

The gunman who killed his wife and four others in a rampage in Northern California this week found an easy way around a court order prohibiting him from having guns: He built his own at home. Kevin Neal, 44, was armed with what authorities believe were two high-powered rifles that he made himself when he opened fire Tuesday on homes, cars and an elementary school around his tiny hometown of Rancho Tehama Reserve. A deputy finally shot and killed him. |

Utah drivers in 2018 will save some money after lawmakers eliminated a required car safety check, but visitors to hotels, motels and campgrounds will feel a slight pinch in their pocketbooks under a new tax. The changes are among a handful of new laws taking effect Monday in Utah. Most of the roughly 500 laws passed by Utah legislators in 2017 took effect in May, a default date marking 60 days from the end of Utah’s short legislative session. A few dozen more took effect July 1, the start of Utah’s new budget year. |

Offering a hint of hope to a city notorious worldwide for its gun violence, Chicago saw a decline of more than 100 homicide victims in 2017 compared with the previous year — the steepest one-year reduction in nearly 15 years. But Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration, a beleaguered police department and residents of the blighted neighborhoods where the bloodshed is largely concentrated nevertheless are faced with a horrific toll: 664 people slain within city limits by New Year’s Eve, plus seven people shot dead by on-duty Chicago Police officers, according to data compiled by the Chicago Sun-Times. |

A resident has proposed an ordinance intent on keeping a state police training facility outside Griswold’s borders. For more than a year, Griswold residents and officials have been wary of the state negotiating for the purchase of a 113-acre property on Lee Road to be used to construct a 55,000-square-foot firearm training facility. Steve Douglas, who said he has been an outspoken opponent of the project since the get-go, drafted the proposal.

The best deer hunting is yet to come. At this point in deer season, many hunters look at the season as being half over, but more serious avid hunters understand that the best hunting is yet to come. The weather plays a big part in deer movement. Remember just a couple of weeks ago when the temperatures were warm and the abnormal fogging conditions during the mornings and afternoons made it difficult to see much less hunt. Things are about to drastically change. |

As the year winds down, a little retrospection is natural. In First Gear terms, it means we happened across a heretofore unrecognized pattern in an important class—optics. In a word, Vortex. Back in May, we tag-teamed a 1-6x24 Razor HD with a reissued IWI “Galil.” Results were, well, outstanding—an innovative, smooth-shooting update to an already great rifle, paired with a versatile, ultra-rugged optic. Recently, we migrated this optic to another 7.62x51 rifle, and worked it even harder. |
