"The District of Columbia's gun ban has claimed another victim, and this time a veteran newsman has died, all because criminals know citizens in the nation's capitol cannot fight back ..."
"'Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of veteran New York Times reporter and editor David E. Rosenbaum, who died Sunday from injuries he suffered during a brutal robbery Friday night near his home in northwest Washington, D.C.,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb ... 'We cannot know whether Mr. Rosenbaum would ever have kept a gun for personal protection, but we do know that every law-abiding citizen now living in the District can't. And we also know that for years, criminals have taken advantage of this environment of public disarmament ...'" |

"Judge Samuel A. Alito's judicial views pose serious dangers to the safety of our communities, our families, and our children, as evidenced by his troubling dissent in U.S. v. Rybar, 103 F.3d 273 (3rd Cir. 1996). For this reason, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence announced its opposition to Judge Alito's nomination to the United States Supreme Court last month. (It is the first time in its history that the Brady Center has opposed a Supreme Court nomination.)"

Alito attempted to erect arbitrary hurdles to Congressional efforts to reduce the availability of machine guns to the criminal element. ..." ... -------

"The Control Arms Campaign, an organisation fighting arms proliferation has called on UN member states to govern the sale of weapons which have led to bloody conflicts across the world. This comes ahead of a UN meeting this week to prepare the ground for a conference on small arms controls in June. Control Arms Campaign argues that existing arms controls are powerless to protect innocent civilians. There is no international agreement governing the transfer of arms."

"State Reps. John Coghill Jr. and Carl Gatto think these standards for self-defense are too restrictive. They have pre-filed separate but identical bills to drastically expand the 'castle' rule. If a potential attacker confronts you anywhere you have a legal right to be, you don't even have to think about safely retreating. For good measure, their bills also virtually eliminate the retreat rule in any other self-defense situation. Unless you know 'to a certainty' you can retreat safely, you are free to fire away in self-defense." ... |

"California's senior senator just repeated all the left's cliches about Alito, in the hearing today: pro-machine gun opinions, Roe as a synonym for abortion and privacy rights, Alito must mirror O'Connor, affirmative action, reapportionment ('one man, one vote'), and the 'fifth vote.' Of course, it is virtually impossible that Alito could make any difference at all on Roe, since there are now at most only three other anti-Roe votes on the Court."

It's a bad situation that could have turned out a lot worse: a prisoner at the Brunswick County jail had a gun.
Not only did he have the gun but it was loaded.
Sheriff Ron Hewitt says the man could have hidden the gun in his baggy clothes. The sheriff says the man was never in with the general jail population; rather he was in a holding cell.
Sheriff Hewitt says the man was given a sandwich and tried to hide the gun between the bread. He then threw the sandwich away and that's when officers found the gun.
Sheriff Hewitt says this is just human error. He says this needs to serve as a wake up call for officers to remember just how dangerous their job is. |
