In an email to the San Francisco Chronicle, Superior Court Judge Katherine Feinstein said she didn't want to create a potential future legal conflict should a case involving Mirkarimi be brought to her court.
Feinstein is the daughter of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
Mirkarimi is under investigation over allegations that he was involved in a domestic violence incident with his wife, Eliana Lopez, a charge that she has denied. |

"Ogden’s insurer paid $293,018 in legal fees for the unsuccessful defense of the recently terminated chief of police for violating the federal Hatch Act.
Former chief Jon Greiner was fired on Dec. 28 after the city was notified that Merit System Protection Board had upheld a finding that he had violated the act. Now Ogden will pay the veteran cop $77,300 in severance, an amount equal to six months of his annual salary and benefits package of $154,600, according to Shawn Choate, director of Human Resources for Ogden.

Submitter's note: Violate the law, get six months paid vacation. The administrator/bureaucrat class is where the REAL taxpayer mooching takes place. Shouldn't cops be held to a higher standard? |

It's not long ago that I jumped from the land of Microsoft and into the world of Macs. My desktop here at work is now a Mac and my BlackBerry has turned into an iPhone. Like most of those who've made a similar journey, I soon found myself researching and downloading the latest apps. (For the unindoctrinated, apps are applications that run on your smartphones or tablets.) Little did I know that such research would produce an app by the NRA. Divided into five separate categories, the app provides the latest stories by NRANews, NRA-ILA and those of us here at NRAblog. There's also video, the ability to find NRA related activities in your area, links to NRA social media properties and more. |

The idea that you will ever divest nuts of guns, is nuts. No matter what happens, criminals and the insane will get guns. The rational thing to do is to ask, can there be a such thing as a "gun free zone?"

Last week, teenage mother Sarah McKinley used a shotgun to shoot and kill a home intruder in defense of her infant son. The case made national news after the media obtained the audio of her call to 911, in which she asked the operator for permission to fire.
It didn't take long for the National Rifle Association supporters in the right-wing media to deploy her harrowing experience as a cudgel against their political foes. Here'sNational Review editor Rich Lowry in his latest column: |

This brings back to public debate the need to allow media men as a policy to bear arms for their personal protection as they ply their usually dangerous trade, especially those in the provinces and security-challenged areas.
Today's regulations allow civilians, like cashiers whose nature of work requires special protection, to bear arms and carry them outside residence. Others, including media men, will have first to show proof of specific threats to their lives and limbs before they get their permits to carry (PTC) from the firearms and explosive unit of the PNP.
And the fees are pretty stiff, including the process, so that only those who can afford, with some connections get theirs in a jiffy. |

Recently I've been having an internal debate about the issue of gun control. I'm all for it, and I'm aware that the right to bear arms is constitutionally protected. Now I would be first in line to claim that the right to peacefully assemble is constitutionally protected, and doesn't have any limitations on it like only until 10 PM. I don't think the right to bear arms is limited either, and there's my dilemma. Why do I only want to follow the constitution when it suits me? |

The chairman of the humanitarian organization Şefkat-Der, Hayrettin Bulan, who was on the receiving end of fierce criticism two weeks ago when he suggested that abused women should receive state-funded lessons at shooting ranges and be issued free, licensed firearms, has revealed that over 3,000 women have applied for such lessons.
In a press statement on Sunday, Bulan said that so far, about 3,000 women have put in applications for shooting lessons, adding that interest in enrolling in such classes is increasing every day. |

As New Hampshire voters get set to head to the polls, Mitt and Jon Huntsman continue to ignore requests from gun owners that he return the GOA candidate questionnaire.
Thank to your efforts, we’ve heard from most of the Republican candidates, including Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. But Romney and Huntsman continue to turn a deaf ear to the Second Amendment community.
Romney’s stonewalling is no surprise. After all, he is on record supporting a semi-auto ban and waiting periods for gun purchases. Still, he has the audacity to travel around the country claiming to be a supporter of the Second Amendment. |

The Chesterfield City Council is proposing a new ordinance, many say violates the Missouri Constitution.
The issue boils down to the right to protect property, but the question is protect it from what?
Chesterfield officials say you have the right to protect yourself or your land from an intruder, but if that intruder is an animal, then they want residents to think again.
Gene Schenberg’s Chesterfield home is under siege. Squirrels are claiming their territory and damaging his property.
But nothing worked, until Schenberg bought a pellet gun. "It is extremely accurate and it`s a little tiny pellet," said Schenberg. But his tactics triggered concern from a nearby neighbor. |

An attorney representing the family of Yemalla Sprauve, the woman killed while allegedly trying to rob a Vergennes convenience store in September, said he expects to review the case this month.
Sprauve’s death has prompted prosecutors to revisit language that outlines when the use of deadly force is justified.
“I don’t know what happened,” Brooks McArthur of Burlington said Friday. “The investigation isn’t open to us right now because, obviously, it’s an ongoing investigation.” |

The civilian disarmament crowd at the Brady Campaign is promoting nationwide candlelight vigils on Sunday to “honor victims of gun violence” and call for more gun control laws.
They chose Sunday for the candle lighting campaign because it’s the one-year anniversary of the shooting in Tucson, Az., that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D.-Az.) seriously wounded. Hey, if you’re going to exploit a tragedy for political gain, may as well get a two-fer, right? Thankfully there will be no vigil at the Oklahoma home of Sarah McKinley, who on New Years Eve shot and killed a knife-wielding man who broke into her residence. |

Republicans seem to consider the Second Amendment to be part of the Ten Commandments. That is, no matter how outlandish, nonsensical, and just plain dangerous a bill regarding guns, members of the GOP overwhelmingly support it. Several important bills dealing with firearms recently came before the State House. House Bill 334 gives the Legislature sole authority to regulate guns on public land or in publicly owned or financed buildings. HB 536 would do away with gun permitting. |

One might expect conservatives to unite against this trend. The specter of the government turning its military force against the people helped drive conservatives’ support for an individual right to bear arms under the Second Amendment. Yet most of the candidates seem unconcerned about indefinite military detention for U.S. citizens. Three of them (Romney, Perry and Santorum) have praised the government’s execution, without trial and based on secret information, of U.S. citizen Anwar Al-Awlaki. |
