First story- You’re asleep in bed. It is after midnight when you hear someone trying to pry open your bedroom window.
Second story- You own and operate your own drug store. You’re behind the counter when you see three men dressed in black rush inside. One of them shouts for you not to move and reaches for his pocket.
Third story-You walk out of a store on the southside of Chicago. A man pulls a gun out of his jacket pocket and tells you to hand it over.

The other class of pro-gun supporters extrapolate the amendment as written in 1789 to refer to today’s National Guard, or the state police, or the local police -- none of which existed in 1789. It’s no surprise that this country in 1789 was different in many essential ways from today’s US. There is no “militia” today, and there hasn’t been any major move to create a militia in view of the other protective organizations mentioned above.

Senate Bill 5444, sponsored by Senator David Frockt (D-46) would impose a registration-licensing system on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms and standard-capacity ammunition magazines that bill proponents label as “assault weapons” and “large-capacity magazines” (LCM). Every person who possesses, transports, manufactures, purchases or sells a so-called “assault weapon” or LCM must have an annual state-issued license, with an updated license required every time there is a change in possession of the gun or magazine. |

Given the potpourri of new California laws passed by our esteemed Sacramento legislators, who knows what the unintended consequences might be. The new Sacramento laws — e.g. ones that violate property rights, the Second Amendment and other quirky ones like state sanctuary status, immigration, pot and crossing streets (assuming they can and will be enforced) — combined with the new federal tax laws, are likely to change the cartoon joke to a statement of fact.
In other words, I wouldn’t be too surprised if the former law-abiding, taxpaying public starts planning their moves and buying their exit tickets. |

In 2016 the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the Second Amendment alone isn’t good cause enough to carry a concealed weapon. In Sonoma County, someone typically must demonstrate an unavoidable risk to their safety in order to have good cause.
“Being able to meet the basic qualifications is just the beginning,” said Sebastopol Police Chief James Conner. “While good cause can mean different things in different circumstances, bare fear of being victimized isn’t good cause to have a concealed carry weapon.”
Gabriel Vaughn, owner of the Sportsman’s Arms in Petaluma, said he’s asked about concealed carry licenses all the time.
“First, I say, pray for a miracle,” he said. “Second, refer to No. 1number one.” |

With a newfound majority in the Washington Senate, state Democrats have found an early target in firearm regulation as the 2018 legislative session gets set to begin.
Senate Bill 6049 would regulate the ownership and manufacturing of large capacity magazines and make them all but illegal in most cases. “Large capacity” refers to any magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds.
The bill was requested by Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who cited a motivation in mass shootings across the country, including a 2016 shooting at a house party in Mukilteo, Washington in which three were killed and one was injured. |

Most of the people who came to a forum Monday night said no to armed teachers in public schools.
The forum was held to get response from the public on a proposed policy that would allow school staff members to carry concealed weapons for school protection. Some people spoke for the policy, but many more spoke against it.
Since the beginning of the school year, Cody’s school board has been debating a proposed policy of allowing school personnel, including teachers, to carry concealed weapons on campus.
The school district calls it CKA. The trustees decided to ask people in the community for their opinions. |

A U.S. firearms maker plans to expand production into the Yellowhammer State.
Kimber Mfg Inc. is investing $38 million in a production facility in Troy, creating 366 jobs in the process.

The United States is the largest source of guns entering Brazil that end up in the hands of armed bandits and drug traffickers, according to a Brazilian Federal Police report seen by Reuters.
Roughly 1,500 guns originated in the United States out of a study of more than 10,000 arms seized by police since 2014, mostly in Rio de Janeiro, the December 2017 report said, although the guns often travelled through a third country before arriving in Brazil. |

Gov. Kate Brown’s priorities for the 2018 legislative session include efforts to pay down the state’s public pension liability and tighten restrictions on gun ownership.
Brown, who is running for reelection in November, released five proposals Wednesday, ahead of the short session that begins Feb. 5 and will last up to 35 days.
Here are the governor’s proposals:
Gun control: This proposal lays out a previously voiced desire of the governor to close the “Boyfriend Loophole” by modifying state law to bar people convicted of misdemeanor stalking and/or domestic violence from purchasing a firearm. |

As if American gun laws weren’t convoluted enough, 3D printed firearms, also known as “ghost guns,” are making regulation policies even more complicated and difficult to enforce.
In a recent development, Defense Distributed, a controversial online organization dedicated to designing and proliferating downloadable and 3D printable ghost guns, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. State Department to challenge the latter’s efforts to regulate 3D printed guns and limit how they are distributed. |

The bill, by Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas, would dock federal agencies that fail to upload relevant disqualifying records into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, and would grant more money to states that comply.
The legislation already has 17 Democratic co-sponsors, 17 Republican co-sponsors, and an independent co-sponsor, Sen. Angus King of Maine, and is expected to pass the chamber easily when it is put to a vote. |

About 70 percent of pistol permit holders in Livingston County that need to recertify have completed the process, according to Livingston County Clerk Mary F. Strickland.
Pistol permit holders whose permits were issued before Jan. 15, 2013, must recertify by Jan. 31 under terms of the NY SAFE Act or risk “revocation of such license” which could result in the seizure of all firearms.
Permit holders must recertify every five years, regardless of whether they receive a notification letter or not. |

As a general rule, I’m not a big one for making New Year’s Resolutions. However, for various reasons, I’ve been studying my own personal defense plan and feel the need to focus on improving it and making it better.
