"Paul Helmke’s Huffington Post book review of 1/9/07 denies care to the innocent."

"Mr. Helmke of The Brady Center reviews a book whose thesis is the old saw that gun violence is a health issue. Knowing a little something about health, I’ll say the treatment stinks."

"The first thing the only-shootings-are-a-health-problem mob forgets is the practice that you treat the patient as a whole."

"In battling only one aspect of all crime – shootings – one cannot just cut into people’s rights, carve up whole healthy, functioning organs, ignore more severe emergencies, amputate healthy parts and still say that one has understanding."

"Understanding is the most significant thing lacking in the left."

"In short, the anti-gun mob misses the diagnosis, and the treatment is pure quackery." ...

"The cartridges, to be shipped later this year, are aimed at the gun collector crowd and its fast-growing contingent of cowboy aficionados, the company said." ...

"...it will be necessary to enquire into the true situation of the people of this country. Without this we can form no adequate idea what kind of government will secure their rights and liberties. There is more equality of rank and fortune in America than in any other country under the sun; and this is likely to continue as long as the unappropriated western lands remain unsettled. They are equal in rights...."

"Re the Dec. 27 commentary, 'Too many weapons: Control guns to stop the tide of death,' by John D. Kelly IV:"

"Dr. Kelly obviously is committed to the medical profession. However, his negative position on firearms ownership is an emotional response that avoids the true factors in violent acts."

"He blames availability of guns and concealed-carry permits as the cause of 380 homicides in Philadelphia in 2005, noting that 208 of these deaths were over disputes."

"Dr. Kelly seems to purport that holding individuals accountable for their actions is unrealistic, and, therefore, that eliminating the rights in the Second Amendment is the only plausible solution to violent crime." ...

"Monday's letter, 'Destroyed by our own weapons,' left me sad. I respectfully remind the letter writer that there is no such thing as a bad gun, although there are many reasons that we are constantly faced with bad people."

"He knocks the National Rifle Association due to its stand on our Second Amendment rights but doesn't mention that it is the organization responsible for having trained more people in firearms safety than any other in the world. He indicates that as a veteran he would never have a gun in his home knowing what can happen accidentally. ... "This is the all-familiar Second Amendment. ... When the U.S. Constitution was adopted, each state had its own well-regulated-militia in which its associates were held accountable to an assorted set of requirements. This was meant to say that it was a constitutional right for militias to have possession of a weapon for self-defense without being told otherwise. Unfortunately, people eventually took advantage of this right and started carrying weapons and saying that the Second Amendment gave them the OK. Because the population of these horrific people is growing constantly, it's hard to trust anyone with the right to keep and bear arms." ...

Submitter's Note: So if you believe the Second Amendment protects an individual right, you are a 'horrific' person.

"Throughout America there are roughly 10,000 handgun deaths per year, where there are about 65 million handguns.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. — EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens]
