U.S. to Push Airlines for Passenger Records

CAPPS 2 will now be a reality. Welcome to Orwellian America.

-------
"Despite stiff resistance from airlines and privacy advocates, the U.S. government plans to push ahead this year with a vast computerized system to probe the backgrounds of all passengers boarding flights in the United States."

"The government will compel airlines and airline reservations companies to hand over all passenger records for scrutiny by U.S. officials, after failing to win cooperation in the program's testing phase. The order could be issued as soon as next month. Under the system, all travelers passing through a U.S. airport are to be scored with a number and a color that ranks their perceived threat to the aircraft."

"Another program that is to be introduced this year that seeks to speed frequent fliers through security lines in exchange for volunteering personal information to the government."

Gun Stores-Crime Data Tracked in Study

"About one of every seven guns linked to American crimes or considered suspicious from 1996 through 2000 can be traced back to the same 120 gun stores, a gun safety group said Monday, urging the government to set up a watch list of irresponsible or corrupt gun dealers."

"Of the 373,006 guns traced from crimes during the five-year period, 54,694 came from the 120 stores, according to data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives. The data, which surfaced in a lawsuit by the NAACP against gun manufacturers, was made public by the Washington-based Americans for Gun Safety Foundation."

-------
These gun banners admitted that there was nothing to indicate that these stores did anything illegal. So why draw negative attention to legitimate businesses, if not to vilify the industry.

Meanwhile, a gun store owner insists on perpetuating the gun show "loophole" lie in a vain attempt to save his business' reputation: "Don Davis, owner of Don's Guns & Galleries, said his stores do state and federal background checks on everyone who buys. ...Once the weapons leave the store, they can be sold repeatedly at gun shows with no background check, and that is probably what happened to the guns that came from his shops, he said.

Pilots Not Rushing to Become Armed

"Even though airline pilots have voiced support for the concept of carrying guns in the cockpit the majority of them are staying away from getting training because of what they consider government red tape."

"Pilots who spoke to Fox News outlined problems they saw with the training. They said the lengthy application, the three-hour psychological exam and the unpaid leave and pay-your-own-way training in the New Mexico desert, among other things, are too frustrating."

-------
Many pilots are already proficient with their firearms, are former military and can handle guns better than many law enforcement agents. Why is it, then, that the federal government insists on providing their own substandard training and miring them in so much bureaucratic red tape, so as to make it inconvenient and cumbersome for them to carry their guns? Could it be just another convenient "reason" to implement their Orwellian CAPPS 2 program? After all, there just aren't enough armed pilots!

"The steps that have been taken since 9-11 to establish a police state within America have not been kept from public view. Under the rubric of the 'War on Terror' the Bush Administration has been able to dispatch the CIA to all 50 states where they now operate freely, conducting operations against American citizens. . . . Along with the dramatic curtailing of civil liberties under the Patriot Act, and the equally dramatic increase in government surveillance of American citizens, virtually all of the parts of the repressive puzzle are in place to insure a reasonably peaceful transition from our present form of governance."

"Say you’re pulled over for a traffic violation – maybe your tail light is out. The officer asks to see your license and registration, and either issues a citation or a warning."

"And then he runs a cotton swab through your mouth to collect a sample of your DNA for the federal government."

"While that’s certainly not the intent of Patriot Act II, 'The intent, and how a law is applied, are often two different things,' said Scott Crichton, executive director of the Montana branch of the ACLU."

"The Patriot Act has already been used by the FBI to obtain information in investigations that have nothing to do with terrorism, including a probe into corruption in Las Vegas involving an owner of strip clubs."

"I'm no expert on WWII - but I learned a lot about what happened in Germany - and Europe - back in those days. I always wondered how the wonderful German people - so honest, decent, hard-working, friendly, and generous - could ever allow such a thing to happen. ... I asked a lot of questions ... My relatives had obviously spent a lot of time thinking about the war - they still haven't forgotten - I don't think anyone can forget such a horrible nightmare." ...

"So why, now, when I hear GWB's speeches, do I think of Hitler? Why have I drawn a parallel between the Nazis and the present administration? Just one small reason -the phrase 'Never forget'. Never let this happen again. It is better to question our government - because it really can happen here - than to ignore the possibility."

"A state trooper shot and killed his girlfriend Sunday in his apartment in Metairie, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said."

-------
The trooper claims he shot in self-defense. No arrest was made!! When Melvin Spaulding of Florida shot a guy in the arm to protect his friend from getting stomped to death, he was taken to jail and prosecutors were considering pressing charges against him.

Would any of us "civilians" be given the same benefit of the doubt?

AL: "Guns and Mental Illness"

"Despite required background checks, the only way a mentally ill person without a criminal record can be denied a gun purchase in Alabama is if the person admits his mental disability on a form provided by the gun dealer." ...

"Federal law prohibits people who have been judged to be mentally ill from buying a gun. To prevent such purchases, and also to prevent felons from buying guns, gun dealers must submit information regarding a prospective gun buyer to an FBI database. The computerized database costs nothing for the state or gun dealer. It is nearly instantaneous, much like a credit-card authorization."

"If a licensed gun dealer submits the name of a person who has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, the FBI's background check denies the application, thus preventing the sale." ...

" 'Farron Barksdale should not have been able to buy a gun,' Davis said. 'It's time we make some changes.' "

-------
It's a pretty bold assumption to say that this mentally ill individual wouldn't have been able to purchase a gun had his mental records been included in background checks. He wouldn't have been able to purchase a gun through a licensed dealer. But less legal options would have still been available to him.

Additionally, to assume that every person who is under a psychiatrist's care is violent and will kill is bigoted and faulty.

"And now, the latest evidence of Americans' fascination with guns, cars and outlaws: the faux bullet hole."

"Drivers are increasingly using the magnets and stickers to create the head-turning illusion of a bullet-riddled vehicle. For some, the fake holes are a cheap way to customize their cars or motorcycles and achieve that gangster look, but without the lifestyle. Still others use them to play harmless practical jokes on people." ...

"Americans tend not to think about the fact our country has the highest level of gun violence in the industrialized world. And not coincidentally, we have the weakest gun laws compared to those countries..."

-------
More misleading anti-gun paranoia from the State of Hysteria. Funny he doesn't mention the fact that countries that have banned guns or have stringent gun control have the highest rates of violent crime in the industrialized world, while the US is barely on that list. He's just got to berate someone for being insensitive

"Think for a moment of the rights that Americans enjoy. Which is the most precious? Which is the most fundamental? Which of our rights can we truly not be free without?"

"Freedom of speech? Freedom of religion? How about Freedom against unreasonable searches and seizures? Yes these are all hallmarks of a free society. Yet there is one freedom which protects these and all our other rights in America. That right is found in our Constitution in the form of the Second Amendment."

"Yes truly the right of Americans to keep and bare arms is the most fundamental of all our liberties. The Founders were brilliant men. They knew our rights came from the Creator and they formed a nation based on respecting and defending those rights. They also knew that those God-given rights would last only as long as the American people held the right to own guns."

"Think of it, without the freedom to own guns we are unable to defend our other rights. Without the Second Amendment the rest of the constitution is hollow and meaningless. By its very nature any government will, over time become greedy and start to encroach on the rights of its people. The founders certainly knew this and put the right to own guns as the ultimate defense against government intrusion upon our liberties."

"This truth is why the battle against gun control is so crucial to preserving America’s freedoms. None of our constitutional rights has been so maligned or attacked, as has the right to keep and bare arms." ...

"Bailey and two other instructors arranged the course to coincide with Ohio's concealed carry legislation signed into law Thursday by Gov. Bob Taft."

"The star witness is dead, the prosecutor has quit and the state's best evidence could get chucked, but the Queens DA's Office is rolling forward with its case against a correction officer charged with using a pipe to beat her dad to death."

"The murder trial of former Rikers Island guard Renee Dasque, 38, should have been half over this week - but extraordinary circumstances dragged it out. 'I have never proceeded at such a snail's pace in my life,' Supreme Court Justice Sheri Roman said."

"The case seemed straightforward. Prosecutors say Renee Dasque savagely and fatally pounded her hog-tied father, Jacques with a pipe - then turned the weapon on her sister, Jeanine, who tried to intervene."

Your editorial about gun laws ("Going easy on guns," Jan. 4) makes me a firm believer that at least 99.9 percent of you editorialists won't be happy until all private citizens are stripped of gun ownership.

The Brady Bill was flawed from the beginning. Most parts of it diminished private firearm ownership with little effect on reducing real gun violence. It is too important that private citizens retain legal ownership of firearms for their self-defense to strip that right away by laws that do nothing to really lessen violence in this country.

There are multitudes of realities that kill kids in this country, and death and injury from guns is minor compared with all causes. The killers and lawbreakers kill and maim with guns, knives, hands, and so on. Continually eroding private citizens' rights to possess firearms for self-defense will certainly make the matter worse rather than better.

"He admits to the allegations."

"MSDF officials have promised to come down hard on Miki if the allegations against him are proved to be true."

"Police said that while riding an elevator on Sunday, off-duty Miki grabbed the 18-year-old schoolgirl from behind and began squeezing her breasts while ordering her to keep quiet."

"Officers arrived at the Greyhound terminal at 7:24 p.m. and found the suspect on top of the woman, police said in a news release. When the man showed the knife and began to lower it back toward the woman, the officer shot him with an AR-15 rifle."

"Police said the officer who fired the shot is Brian D. Hubbard, 38, who has been a Portland police officer for nearly eight years. Hubbard was interviewed by investigators Sunday evening."

"Groepper said the investigation is continuing."

"Officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome."

"An autopsy performed Sunday showed he died of a single gunshot wound to the head."

"ALBURY police yesterday issued a warning about the dangers of possessing knives, saying one to two blades were being seized each week in the city."

"Insp Breck Scott-Young was speaking after recent incidents where people have been found possessing knives without a legitimate purpose."

"Under New South Wales law, if a person with a knife in custody in a public place cannot provide a legitimate reason they are handed an on the spot fine worth $550 and the weapon is seized."

Self defence or the defence of another person is not considered a reasonable excuse.

-------
That's right. Self defense is not an excuse. It's the government's job to protect you from armed thugs, and if they are unable to do it, too bad. You will be punished if you display any personal responsibility at all for your safety and your life. Maybe real soon, the Australian government will outlaw your knives and pre-cut your food for you just in case.

A bodyguard for Gauteng health MEC Gwen Ramagopa was shot and critically wounded in an armed robbery in Soweto tonight, police said. Captain Mbazima Shiburi said the bodyguard, who is a member of the police VIP protection unit, had gone to Soweto around 7pm to visit family in Molapo.

Outside the house he was attacked by two unidentified armed men and shot in the head. They drove away in his government vehicle, also taking his service pistol and private cell phone. The man, whose name and age was still unknown, was taken to a clinic in Soweto where he was reportedly in a critical condition.

Shiburi said the Soweto police dog unit later found the man's government vehicle abandoned on Roodepoort Road in central-western Jabavu.

Police were investigating cases of armed robbery and attempted murder.

A random police check of vehicles at Los Angeles International Airport turned up a pistol and a loaded shotgun in the trunk of a Chevy Sunday night.

Airport police told reporters that the FBI detained Sultan Abdul-Malik because he was a prior felon and had not registered the weapons. Los Angeles television station KNBC said Monday that Abdul-Malik was being held on $35,000 bail.

The random car searches continued at the airport Monday because security experts consider it a tempting target for terrorists. It has been on a high state of alert even though the national threat level was reduced to "elevated" over the weekend.

"It's not the horrendous cost of nearly $1 billion (so far) that's the scandal - shucks, governments waste that all the time, witness our submarines that leak. It's that gun control may actually increase violent crime. The feds already fudge figures to pretend it works." ...

Four million CCTV cameras watch public. UK has the highest level of surveillance

"More than four million surveillance cameras monitor our every move, making Britain the most-watched nation in the world, research has revealed."

"The number of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras has quadrupled in the past three years, and there is now one for every 14 people in the UK. The increase is happening at twice the predicted rate, and it is believed that Britain accounts for one-fifth of all CCTV cameras worldwide. Estimates suggest that residents of a city such as London can each expect to be captured on CCTV cameras up to 300 times a day, and much of the filming breaches existing data guidelines."

"George Wilson, 66, was shot dead by his next-door neighbour in an alleged row about a tiny privet hedge which separated their two gardens."

"Robert Dickenson, 52, was charged with murder after the incident in June 2003, but was later found hanging in his cell at Lincoln Prison."

"Lincolnshire coroner Roger Atkinson said: 'George Wilson lived at 16 Webster Close and Robert Dickenson lived next door at number 18.' "

"They had a neighbour dispute which apparently had lasted for sometime."

" 'Mr Dickenson went into his house and got hold of a pistol and shot Mr Wilson dead,' the coroner said."

But how did he have a gun?!? Guns are banned!

"A Toronto police sergeant was taking cover in a dark and narrow walkway Saturday evening when he was shot in the arm by an enraged 63-year-old man who swore he would kill police if they didn't get off his property."

"Sergeant Allan Jenkins, accompanied by Constable Scott Ritchie and a third officer, was responding to a complaint of threatening behaviour at a house in the Dufferin St. and Rogers Rd. area shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday when the gunfire erupted."

"After Antonio Bellon fired a single shotgun round at Jenkins, police say, Ritchie returned fire with his Glock service revolver, firing at least twice and striking Bellon in the upper chest, killing him."

If firearms kill, then why do we arm the police?

"More than 200 people demonstrated peacefully outside Louisville Metro Police headquarters yesterday afternoon in response to the shooting death of a black man by a white police officer."

"The protest was the second sparked by the death of Michael Newby, who was shot in the back [three times!] by undercover Officer McKenzie Mattingly during an alleged attempted drug transaction on Jan. 3. Police said Newby had a pistol in his waistband and had struggled with Mattingly over the officer's gun."

"The first protest, held Thursday, ended when police in riot gear were called to disperse a crowd of about 60 protesters who refused to leave and broke windows in the headquarters, at Seventh and Jefferson streets."

"Steve Jones hardly fits most people's idea of a victim."

"Jones has spent more than one-third his life as an inmate in some of Illinois' toughest prisons -- including the 'super-max' at Tamms -- while serving out a 36-year sentence for murder and attempted murder."

"Yet victimhood is the status Jones is claiming for himself."

"It is the linchpin of his defense as he prepares for his upcoming federal trial on charges he conspired with a state prison guard to distribute crack cocaine and to sell a 9mm pistol to a felon."

"Michael S. Poenitske a former guard at the Menard Correctional Center, has already pleaded guilty to the drug and weapons charge."

But only law enforcement officers should have guns, right Sarah?

"The streets of several Pretoria suburbs rang with the sound of gunfire and speeding cars as police closed in on five alleged hijackers at the weekend."

"Two police vehicles were damaged in Sunday's early morning shooting and a police officer is lucky to be alive after two bullets missed his head by centimetres."

"All five suspects were arrested and the hijacked vehicle and another stolen vehicle were recovered."

"A chromed R5 rifle - still on automatic - was found in a swimming pool and a 9mm pistol in another street in Kilner Park after they were thrown away by the suspects."

-------
Yet the government is unilaterally disarming the populace and leaving them defenseless against thugs such as this. You will find these stories becoming more frequent as the disarmament of the peaceable citizens continues in South Africa.

"The Nevada Republican also told about 100 students at Reed High School that the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment protecting the right to bear arms is the most important of all the Bill of Rights because the first step taken by dictators like Saddam Hussein is to take away citizens' guns."

"Missoula’s Gary Marbut has taught more than 1,000 people – mostly women – about the safe and legal use of firearms for personal protection."

"The president of the Montana Shooting Sports Association, a political action organization for gun owners, Marbut also serves as a consultant in court cases involving firearms, safety and the use of force, and teaches classes on gun safety and tactical handgun procedures for civilians, security personnel and law enforcement." ...

"But until now, there was no handy source of Montana gun laws that he could use as a reference manual for the classes. Marbut has rectified that situation with the publication last month of his book, 'Gun Laws of Montana.' "

"VILLAGERS who fear a killer could be among them prayed yesterday for an elderly colonel shot dead on his doorstep."

"Retired Lieutenant Colonel Robert Riley Workman, 83, was killed in the hamlet of Furneux Pelham, Herts, last Wednesday night."

"His body was found by his carer on Thursday." ...

"Police still do not know of a motive for the killing. Nothing was stolen from Mr Workman's home."

"They plan to question all 400 villagers and forensically test every shotgun known to be held locally."

-------
And will the criminal simply give up his gun to be tested? Or is this just another scheme to inconvenience and punish those who didn't do it?

"A Virginia gun lobbyist is seeking the repeal of a law that forbids a person with a concealed-carry permit from carrying a gun into a restaurant."

" 'A person with a permit to carry a concealed weapon should be able to walk into a Red Lobster,' said Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun-rights group. 'You don't want to leave your gun in the car for it to be stolen.' " ...

"Mr. Van Cleave's group wants the law to allow people with a permit to carry a concealed weapon as long as they don't drink. If people want to drink wine with their meal, they would have to carry the gun openly, Mr. Van Cleave said."

"A new report has revealed the names of 120 gun stores nationwide that sell the most guns used in crime, and one of them is right here in South Florida."

"Lou's Gun Shop and Police Supply, Inc. in Hialeah reportedly sold 574 guns that were traced to crimes between 1996 and 2000."

"This report is the first to make public the names of high crime stores -- and to criticize the lack of prosecution or penalties for those stores."

-------
Were any of these sales proven to be illegal in any way? And if there were no prosecutions and the store did everything by the book, why vilify it because criminals choose to abuse their rights?

"A West Milwaukee gun store received poor marks by a national gun-safety group."

"It said Badger Outdoors sold the third highest number of guns linked to crimes in the nation."

"Americans For Gun Safety Foundation said between 1996 and 2000, the store sold 1,900 guns that were traced to crimes." ...

"Another store, Shooters Shop (pictured, right), of West Allis, sold nearly 400 guns that the group said were linked to crimes."

"That store is under new ownership, but told 12 News the numbers don't actually mean the guns were used in crimes, they were just traced during the police investigation."

-------
How convenient that this report appears at a time when frivolous lawsuit protection looks like it will become law.

"Hunting seasons are basically over; it's time to store the guns. But before hunters put the shotguns and rifles on the racks, it's best to take some time to clean and oil them. Maybe it's even time to find a way to secure them against theft."

"Firearms usually pick up dirt and moisture in the field or duck blind and that has to be cleaned out before storage."

"To correctly store the firearm, clean it thoroughly first, taking it apart, getting all the dirt, powder and other debris out of the barrel and the chamber. Then get a good oil, such as Rem Oil or Wonder Lube, and wipe down the barrel and other metal parts. Avoid WD-40, which is good, but when storing, a heavier penetrating oil should be used."

" 'Prosecuting Hale DeMar is outrageous,' declared CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. 'And Chief Carpenter's patronizing attitude about facing an immediate and unavoidable threat is shameful, if not downright despicable. ...If Chief Carpenter is so concerned about public safety, why hadn't his department taken Morio Billings, the suspect, off the streets long before he was in the DeMar residence, where he was shot?"

"Carpenter has the audacity to claim that Wilmette residents are much safer without a handgun in the home," Gottlieb added. "What he's really saying is that burglars and home invaders are a lot safer if they enter unarmed Wilmette homes, and he seems eager to maintain that safe working environment for criminals."

"The gun lobby is marshaling its forces for an all-out assault this year to weaken key gun-control laws and shield weapons makers from liability in lawsuits." ...

" 'Major advances for the NRA are within reach this year,' said Robert Spitzer, a political science professor at the State University of New York and author of a book on the politics of gun control. 'With the most sympathetic administration ever, the gun rights groups will have all their chips on the table.' "

Sympathetic administration? Is this the same administration that could make the "assault" weapons ban permanent this year and pushes gun vilification through Project Safe Neighborhoods? Sympathetic to whom?

“From 1890 to 1970, an 80-year span during which cougars were actively pursued and shot by hunters and ranchers, there were 29 recorded attacks by cougars on humans. But from 1971 through 2002 — a 31-year period — there were 77, nearly three times as many.”

The Times was instrumental in propagandizing to the ignorant, resulting in urban Californians voting to end cougar hunts. The gun control policies they demand kill people, and their editorial elites have blood on their hands.
