"Today presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney toured the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show which is run by the firearm industry's trade association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)."

"Gov. Romney's tour of the SHOT Show underscores the continued importance of the sportsmen's and gun owners' vote in national elections. Sportsmen and gun owners have proven to be a vital and influential voting bloc ..."

"'Americans should have the right to own and possess firearms as guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution,' said Governor Romney. 'I'm proud to be among the many decent, law-abiding men and women who safely use firearms.'" ...

"A new study published in the journal Social Science and Medicine by a team of Harvard researchers finds a strong correlation between state-wide homicide rates and the fraction of households in a state that own firearms. While similar studies have been carried out in the past, this one is the first to include the entire nation and to use results available on a state-by-state level. With two out of three homicide victims in the United States killed by firearms, the authors of the study sought to understand what role household firearms played in this national tragedy."

"To obtain the best, most widely-spread data, the researchers used separate data sets for gun ownership and homicides. ..." ...

"It took a jury just under five hours to find Hollis Wayne Fincher guilty of owning illegal machine guns and a sawed-off shotgun."

"Closing arguments in federal court in Fayetteville wrapped at mid-morning and the case went to the federal jury about 10:30 a.m. The jury returned its verdict about 3:20 p.m."

"According to police, Fincher had two .308-caliber machine guns ... The other firearms were 9 mm STEN design submachine guns and a sawed-off shotgun."

"The defense tried to make the case an issue of the Constitution versus federal gun laws. The government tried to make the case as simple as possible for jurors — Fincher had the machine guns and they weren’t registered as required by federal law." ...

"Hollis Wayne Fincher's machine gun trial will go to the jury today with the defense having presented no evidence or witnesses to the jury."

"The defense rested Thursday after U.S. District Judge Jimm Larry Hendren ruled Fincher's proposed testimony inadmissible."

"Fincher testified for more than an hour with the jury out of the courtroom so Hendren could decide if his testimony was admissible."

"Hendren has repeatedly ruled the defense can attack the government's evidence but not the law that applies to the case. He also ruled, based on U.S. Supreme Court precedents, laws passed by Congress to regulate firearms do not violate the Second Amendment." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A North Las Vegas furniture store became the scene of a deadly shooting Thursday night when the store owner shot the person trying to rob him. It happened at Corona Furniture on Civic Center Drive near Lake Mead.

Police say the owner was waiting for a late night delivery when he heard a suspicious knock at the back door. He armed himself, and when he went to the back, the robber lunged at him.

The owner started shooting, hitting the robber who later died at UMC. Right now, this appears to be a case of self-defense, and there are no charges against the store owner.

"DON'T SACRIFICE RIGHTS TO SOLVE NON-PROBLEM"

"Wisconsin remains a holdout in the nationwide trend to allow people to carry concealed guns."

"The Legislature should keep it that way."

"The state has survived quite nicely for 134 years with a ban on concealed weapons. There is no compelling reason to now invite people to carry hidden firearms. In fact, there are compelling reasons to retain the ban."

"Bills to permit concealed weapons have passed the Legislature in each of the past two sessions, only to be vetoed by Gov. Jim Doyle. Last fall's elections have only strengthened Doyle's hand against concealed weapons legislation, but Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem, has suggested that another attempt to pass a bill is likely." ...

"Tong said yesterday he wants to make sure that 'law-abiding gun owners, sportsmen and the like, are not unfairly prosecuted by this.'"

"'When I served as Mayor during the 1990’s, the administration and Congress helped local communities fight crime by providing funds to hire more police, and making it harder for criminals to get guns. As a result, crime decreased. Over the past few years, however, the approach seems to have been switched. Now cities are often seeing less police but more guns on their streets. These new crime statistics indicate that we’re doing things backwards.' – Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."

"Brady Campaign's new spokesman seems full of high-sounding verbiage these days, but the Clinton administration’s crime policies–contrary to Helmke’s claims–fell short on crime fighting:" ...

"An aggravated assault charge was dismissed Friday against Granite School District Police Lt. Richard Todd Rasmussen, who shot and wounded an unarmed man following a chase in October 2004."

"Newly elected Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller said it would be difficult to prove Rasmussen did not fire in self-defense."

"It was Miller's first major decision as the new D.A., and it drew immediate fire from her predecessor, David Yocom, whose office filed the charges against the officer."

"'It should have been decided in a courtroom, rather than for political reasons," Yocom told The Tribune on Friday. "Let a jury make the decision. Especially when a law enforcement officer is involved, it should go to trial.'" ...

"Normally, I look for the bright spots from this show - the innovative new products from little makers or the trends and advancements that make the hunters and shooters more effective or allow them to have more fun in the field."

"This year there are two new permutations of the .308 Winchester - the .300 TC and the .308 Marlin Express. The case configurations are not exactly the same as the Winchester round, but the two new cartridges are close and the ballistics are within a whisper of each other." ...

The Anatomy of Gun Control - you can find it in every piece of legislation that blames inanimate objects and restricts the rights of the law-abiding American while ignoring the real problem. I believe one can find it in every bill or ordinance that the anti-gun lobby slides through California city councils, county boards and the state legislature. The Anatomy of Gun Control exposes itself in the light of day, if you take the time to look."

"Following a recent FBI report that the first half of 2006 saw an increase in violent crime, anti-gun rights organizations quickly moved to blame passage of concealed carry laws and other common sense reversals of 1990s gun control policies."

"There's a term for such a theory: Preposterous. Across the country, experts have anticipated this crime increase for some time, because of the rising number of younger males in what researchers call the 'crime prone years,' combined with a decrease in the number of jobs for unskilled workers and, perhaps most importantly, a return to the streets of gangsters who were imprisoned in the 1990s, and who have completed their sentences." ...
