The U.S. Supreme Court has denied one request to review the Illinois assault weapon ban, but many believe the court is more likely to take up another challenge to the law later this year.
The high court turned down a request by Republican State Rep. Dan Caulkins, of Decatur, to hear an appeal of the case he lost before the Illinois Supreme Court in August.
In his appeal, Caulkins argued that he was denied a fair hearing at the state supreme court because two of the state justices had received large campaign contributions from Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker, who signed the assault weapon ban into law. |

Charges have been filed following a Dec. 26 shooting in Wood River, where a domestic battery incident escalated into a violent confrontation. The suspect, a 28-year-old male, faces serious charges including aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated domestic battery.
As reported by the Telegraph, the situation began early in the morning when police responded to a report of domestic battery. The female victim had fled to her parents’ home for safety. Shortly after, reports of gunfire led police to the scene of a shooting involving the woman’s father and the suspect. |

Democrat lawmakers are advancing legislation intended to prevent privately organized paramilitary and militia group activities within the United States.
Introduced by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) on Thursday, the bill dubbed the “Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act” would prohibit privately organized groups from “publicly patrolling, drilling, or engaging in harmful or deadly paramilitary techniques,” “interfering with or interrupting government proceedings,” or “interfering with the exercise of someone else’s constitutional rights,” according to Mr. Markey. |

Germane proposals will include a ban on guns at public parks and playgrounds with felony penalties for violations — expanding a hallmark of the governor's ongoing declaration of a public health emergency related to gun violence and drug abuse.
The governor's emergency orders, which suspend the right to carry firearms at parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque in response to a string of shootings that have killed children, is being challenged by gun advocates in federal court. Meanwhile the state Supreme Court is considering whether the governor overstepped her authority under state law. |

The first day of the new year was supposed to bring a new gun law into play, but it’s been put on hold for now. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 2 last year, but California courts have stayed the bill on grounds and concerns that it is a violation of residents’ Second Amendment rights.
The new law deals with concealed carrying permits for firearms and will prohibit people with CCWs from carrying in 26 public places. Those places include parks open to the public, churches, playgrounds, and more, even if that person has a concealed carry permit for a weapon. |

Skubick quotes Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as saying a ban on modern sporting rifles (MSRs) “… would be the right thing to do.” Whitmer further is quoted by Skubick saying, “I do think that weapons of war do not make sense for sale to the average persons in the public. I do have a problem with that …”
Gretch and her Democrat cabal are on a crusade to disarm average citizens by passing laws that will not affect the criminal element but will only put layers of red tape on law-abiding citizens. The AR-15 rifle is not a “weapon of war.” It was never used by the military. It is a semi-automatic rifle, unlike the M-16 and CAR-15 fully automatic versions. |

The attacks on the Second Amendment keep coming in the Land of Enchantment! More anti-gun legislation has been pre-filed this week, this time by State Senator Linda Lopez (D-ABQ), who is proposing a California-style 11% excise tax on firearms, firearm precursor parts, suppressors, and ammunition, to be collected from New Mexico firearms retailers and sporting goods outlets and placed in both the crime victims reparation fund and a fund for services to children and families involved in abuse or neglect situations (the latter being an area where the current administration and state agencies have failed abysmally.) |

State Sen. Terry Johnson, R-McDermott, is applauding the release of a report detailing a decrease in gun crime following the enactment of his constitutional carry legislation, Senate Bill 215.
Senate Bill 215, which allows qualifying adults to carry a concealed handgun without obtaining a concealed handgun license, went into effect June 13th, 2022. Six of Ohio’s eight largest cities reported fewer gun crimes when compared to the year prior to the bill’s enactment, according to data collected through a collaboration of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and Bowling Green State University. |

A murder charge in a fatal stabbing here has been dismissed after videos of the incident showed the defendant had a credible self-defense claim, prosecutors say.
Marcus Johnson, 40, of Jennings, was killed in the stabbing Nov. 9, 2022, in Webster Groves, near Ivory Crockett Park. He died at a hospital after police found him stabbed in the chest in the 100 block of Almentor Avenue.

It should come as no surprise that anti-gun Majority Democrats in Harrisburg are already back with more gun control in the new year. On Wednesday, January 17, the House Judiciary Committee will vote on another package of gun control bills. Fortunately, the new Majority leadership doesn’t seem to be able to get anything done. They shuttered the House chamber for a couple months to fix a “leaky roof” while they huddle on the side to pursue a leaky agenda. Skeptics may be shaking their heads and wondering if the partial Statehouse closure has more to do with their lack of votes in the House rather than a drippy ceiling. |

People would be allowed to kill bears on their property without permits if they feel threatened, under a proposal that received initial approval this week in the Florida Senate.
While opponents called instead for better-managing trash in rural counties where interactions between bears and humans have reportedly increased, the Environment and Natural Resources Committee voted to support the bill.
A 2017 estimate by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the most recent available, said the state had about 4,050 bears. Bill sponsor Corey Simon says the proposal isn’t about bear hunting — long a controversial issue in Florida — but self-defense. |

Two people lost their lives in what police describe as a homicide, and then a self-defensive shooting. The event unfolded around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at Lower Mahanoy Township on Malta Road, as reported by the local District Attorney’s Office.
The Pennsylvania State Police revealed that the incident stemmed from an earlier altercation involving two women, one a minor, and 47-year-old Tracey Adams. After the dispute, the women sought refuge at 31-year-old Brandi Hauck’s residence. |

Since then I have been advocating for victims who seek less-than-lethal means to defend themselves.
On January 11th, I went to the Capitol to testify in front of the State Senate regarding a bill I worked with Senator Jesse James on to allow citizens to carry an ECD without a permit. It was my honor to be an advocate for victims and to defend our constitutional rights in front of the State Senate. |

A federal judge in Florida on Friday ruled that a U.S. law that bars people from possessing firearms in post offices is unconstitutional, citing a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling from 2022 that expanded gun rights.
U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump in Tampa, reached that conclusion in dismissing part of an indictment charging a postal worker with illegally possessing a gun in a federal facility. |

Well, 2024 is off to a rough start. Campaigning in Iowa today, the day after another shooting in America, the former president, who is running again in hopes of staying out of prison, offered these words; “We have to get over it. We have to move forward.”
We have been waiting for decades for our elected leaders to “move forward” on the issue of near-daily mass shootings. Of the two political parties, one party has steadfastly stood in the way of any kind of legislation that might help save lives. They’ve been relegated to taking a knee and kissing the ring of the National Rifle Association. Is this about to change? |

A recent AP article in the Monitor (1/4) described Donald Trump’s promise to begin the largest deportation operation in American history even surpassing “Operation Wetback” conducted in 1954 during the Eisenhower administration. The article noted Trump’s Hitlerian rhetoric accusing immigrants of “poisoning the blood of our country” and the callous proposals advanced by him and the GOP. And, it noted how these fit anti-immigrant, especially anti-Mexican, themes in American history. |

On January 11, 2024, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit agreed to re-hear the case of Maryland Shall Issue v Wes Moore.
A three-judge panel found the Maryland law infringed on Second Amendment rights to acquire handguns and was unconstitutional under the Supreme Court Bruen decision of 2022. The three-judge panel filed the split decision on November 21, 2023.
This is a long-running court case challenging numerous infringements required by the Maryland law. The case started in 2016. |

The Lexington Police Department said it is investigating a shooting on Main Street on New Year’s Day and a fatal shooting at a convenience store last month as “justifiable/self-defense.” Two women have been charged in the Main Street shooting, and police said last week they were looking for a third suspect. A police spokeswoman said in an email that the shooting was being investigated as “justifiable/self-defense” in response to a question from the Herald-Leader about why the shooting was not included in an online list of shooting investigations this year.

Police have released the man who shot and killed 39-year-old Charles Rhodes, and are investigating whether what happened was self defense, Lafayette police Lt. Justin Hartman said.
Rhodes died about 2:35 a.m. Thursday after being shot by a roommate in a house in the 2300 block of Drexel Drive.
No one has been arrested, and the suspected shooter was interviewed and released, Hartman said. |
