"Repeating offers made in the past that gave readers free downloads of his “bleeding-edge dystopian thrillers,” author Matthew Bracken will once more be providing Kindle versions of his books at no cost, starting Wednesday and continuing through Thursday."

"'I'm going to put the Enemies Trilogy on a Kindle 'free run' on Wednesday, January 15th,' Bracken announced to followers on Facebook. 'The next day I'll free run my other two books. Pass the word to avid readers who might be short of bucks currently.'" ...

"In an effort to frighten the public into supporting her bill to ban so-called 'assault weapons,' U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has gone to some trouble to publicize the 'threat' posed by 'bump fire' rifle stocks like the Fostech Outdoors 'Bumpski,' and others. To hear Feinstein tell it, these stocks essentially convert semi-automatic firearms into 'machine guns,' but without changing their legal status under current federal law--a situation she intends to change. As she told the Associated Press:" ...

"'Retailers Need to Wake Up,' Director of Government Relations and State Affairs at [NSSF] Jake McGuigan said during a grassroots seminar at the 2014 SHOT Show Tuesday morning. 'It’s not political, it’s our livelihood and our constitutional right.'"

"Anti-gun politicians throughout the country have done everything possible over the past two years, and over the past four decades, to turn law abiding citizens into criminals. In 2012, we saw New York Governor Andrew Cuomo sign the S.A.F.E. Act in the middle of the night, limiting law abiding gun owners to just seven rounds ... In Colorado, we saw legislators put the cap on magazines at 15 rounds, forcing Magpul and it’s more than 200 employees out of the state to Texas. " ...

"Like most things made in Germany, the Merkel RX Helix is an engineering marvel. The Merkel is the newest straight pull bolt action rifle on the market. What sets it apart from the crowd is the fact that the action uses cams to reduce the length of travel. As an example, for a .300 Win Mag you only need to pull the handle back 2.5 inches to get the bolt to move 4.5 inches. I was really impressed how smooth and effortless it was to chamber and extract a round from the rifle. This is undoubtedly the fastest bolt action rifle I have ever handled, and second place finisher is not really close . . ." ...

"It’s a brave new world out there. Things are changing, and new manufacturing process are turning things that we would normally scoff at into reality. One of those new products is polymer cased ammunition, replacing the expensive brass cases with cheap plastic and saving not only a ton of weight but also rare(ish) metals. PCP Ammunition is the first to market with a prototype polymer ammunition, running at the moment in .308 Winchester only. We were handed a box to test out, and so I headed to the range with chronograph in tow to find out if the ammo is any good." ...

"I expected that after Dec. 14, 2012 we would be on a faster path towards gun safety. It appears that we have gone backwards -- starting with our Congress not passing an innocuous background gun check law."

"This was followed by an unsympathetic, unempathetic, and actually apathetic group of gun devotees, who had no respect for the hundreds, if not thousands, of relatives and friends of the Sandy Hook tragedy when they went into a coffee shop with their guns on display."

"It’s too bad columnist Fred LeBrun allows his apparent dislike of Gov. Andrew Cuomo to affect his writing about the NY SAFE Act (“Gun rights folks in a good place,” Jan. 5)."

"Instead of giving credit to the governor for making an effort to reduce gun violence, he accuses him of smuggling the SAFE Act through the Legislature and for proposing it solely for political gain. He claims the vast majority of upstate New Yorkers oppose the act." ...

Submitter's Note: The only thing "reducing violence" has to do with the SAFE Act is to be the pretext used for pushing through just a few more incremental changes aimed at discouraging people from owning guns (or turning them into felons so they can't own them!).

"Zumbo's fall from grace was swift. He was stripped of his column, television appearances, blog and social media. His name became synonymous with 'stepping in it' - being Zumbo-ed."

"Grief is a process: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. The Chicago Tribune, for example, is slowly coming to terms with the fact that Illinois residents will soon be able to exercise their natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. They are at the beginning of their journey, moving out of denial. Permit to carry gun no license to shoot, the headline proclaims. “This spring, law-abiding residents of Illinois will be able to walk the streets with a loaded gun,” the lead announces with bated breath. 'But those who decide to carry concealed weapons will have to grapple with a tough question: When is it appropriate to pull the trigger? ..." ...

... "We as citizens are expected to follow all laws and rules. It is reasonable for the citizens to expect the government to also follow the rules."

"There is a reason criminals do not follow the rules. By not following the rules, you get away with something that you should not do. This allows individuals to further their agenda, criminal or political."

"The New York State Legislature saw fit to not follow the rules in passing the oppressive SAFE Act. The excuse for using the 'message of necessity' to pass this law in the middle of the night had nothing to do with the so-called purchase of a particular device. The purpose was to deny citizen their right to participate in the legislative process." ...

"Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty said his office will not enforce the seven-round provision of the NY SAFE Act after a federal judge ruled it unconstitutional."

"Dougherty said his decision — which applies only to the Sheriff’s Office, and not other law enforcement agencies in the county — comes after inquiries from Livingston County residents asking if the seven-round limit would still be enforced by the Sheriff’s Office."

"'Based on this Court decision the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office will not enforce the seven round limit at this time,' Dougherty said."

"'We will adhere to the federal court’s ruling to protect the taxpayers of Livingston County from civil liabilities and lawsuits,' he said." ...

"Maryland politicians take away your right to protect yourself and your family and The Baltimore Sun blames you:"

"In an act of incredible editorial hubris, the Baltimore Sun opined that the rush to purchase firearms in anticipation of Maryland’s overly restrictive and reactionary firearm law, which led to some unauthorized purchases, was the fault of those fighting to preserve our Second Amendment rights."

"Their painful and strained logic is that the new law caused 'misplaced concern' and the citizen backlash caused Marylanders to flood to firearm outlets to acquire firearms and the 'bottleneck' of paperwork 'stymied' the police."

"So, let me get this straight:" ...
