The Left has declared an all-out war on firearms because of the American independence and individualism they represent. Hillary Clinton, the most anti-gun presidential candidate in recent memory, proposed a bevy of gun-control measures aimed at disarming as many Americans as possible. First she championed a ban on ‘assault weapons’, then a ban on ‘high capacity’ magazines, and finally promoted the asininity of holding gun manufacturers responsible for gun homicides.

We just might be at another one of those crossroads moments in history, a time when the choice of service firearms for both police and military is getting a lot of attention. The last major shift was in 1985, when the government decided to go with a 9 mm pistol designed abroad and made here. Much controversy surrounded this decision, but that is not the major concern in this column. I guess it’s sort of a historical retrospective on how John Law and G.I. Joe were armed. Because their armament almost always follows the military and police trends, armed civilians often use essentially the same firearms.

Travelling at 6 miles above the high desert there is little room for error, especially within the ultra-cozy confines of an Alaskan Airlines 737-8 and sipping a Budweiser/tequila mix while enjoying a productive conversation. One does not expect to learn a valuable lesson about the reality of the US military budget.

The first is “permitless carry,” granting anyone in Minnesota the right to carry a gun wherever they go. The gun lobby prefers to call it “constitutional carry,” and it would invalidate all state laws on carrying or possession of weapons in public.

GOP gubernatorial hopeful Corey Stewart attacked nomination rival Ed Gillespie on Monday at a pro-gun rally outside the state Capitol because Gillespie wasn’t there. “I just saw him up there in the General Assembly Building. But did he even bother to show up and address you? He didn’t,” Stewart told a crowd of gun-rights backers gathered at the Bell Tower. “He sent somebody else — another politician — to come and talk to you. The guy’s afraid of his own shadow.”

Two major medical journals have decided to renew the academic medical establishment’s assault on gun owners. The first shot across the bow appeared in the November 8 Journal of the American Medical Association, where esteemed Stanford University health economist Victor Fuchs published a paper on the problem of life expectancy in the black community. Near the end of his lamentation, Fuchs asserts that increasing life expectancy in the black community “depends more on public health measures such as gun control than on medical care.”

While the Department of Justice has just issued a scathing report that Chicago police have “systematically violated the civil rights” of minorities in the city, the Second Amendment Foundation today is wondering why the DOJ hasn’t investigated the city for repeatedly violating the rights of gun owners. “In the wake of our landmark 2010 victory that nullified Chicago’s handgun ban,” noted SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, “the city has deliberately dragged its feet and created one roadblock after another in an effort to prevent city residents from exercising their firearms rights. As a result, we’ve had to take the city back to court, while the Justice Department was little more than a spectator.

Duane Butt, the co-owner of the Outpost in Brazil has been in the gun business since the 1970's. He's seen enough presidential rotations over the last 40 years to effect not just gun sales, but also public opinion. "It seems like every time they start talking about gun control--they're going to try to ban certain guns--people decide they're going to have those guns, so they purchase those guns," says Butt.

Springfield police say gunfire increased in the city after the theft in October of more than 50 guns from a local firearms dealer. However, The State Journal-Register reports police records show 2016 ended with slight uptick in shots fired from 2015. There were 223 confirmed cases in 2016, up from 219 shots fired the prior year. But police say the numbers are only approximates because not all gunfire is reported.

Week one of the State's 85th legislative session just wrapped up Friday. So far, Texas lawmakers have already filed at least 40 gun related bills. Most of those bills focus on gun safety and more are set to be filed as gun control activists push back against a controversial measure that could open the door to constitutional carry in Texas. Our sister station KMID spoke with two West Texans who think it could make the State a lot safer.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until a majority of voters discover that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. — Alexander Tyler (in his 1770 book, Cycle of Democracy)
