There’s no two ways about it: The United States of America and its 50 state governments love putting people in prison.
The U.S. has both the highest number of prisoners and the highest per capita incarceration rate in the modern world at 655 adults per 100,000. (It’s worth noting that China’s incarceration statistics are dubious, and they execute far more people than the United States. Indeed, the so-called People’s Republic executes more people annually than the rest of the world combined.) Still, that’s more than 2.2 million Americans in state and federal prisons as well as county jails.

I’ve been on rifle ranges while spotting for other shooters at long range, and when the light and temperature is just right you can see the bullet. Well, not the bullet itself, but the vapor trail that it leaves, like a miniature fighter jet, as it streaks to the target. Seeing it in the field had escaped me.
A combination of conditions and a heavy rifle with virtually no recoil allowed me to stay on the scope and see the vapor trail created from the 55-grain boat tail bullet leaving the muzzle of my .220 Swift at a little more than 3,900 feet per second (FPS), enter the coyote between the last two ribs and relieve him of the burden of existence. An intense example of high velocity at work.

They are called Extreme-Risk Protection Orders. Some people call them Red-Flag Gun Confiscation.
In practice, these laws are designed for abuse. We’ve already seen them fail to stop violent crime. At best, innocent individuals have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get their rights restored after they’ve been served with a red-flag order.
Is that the unavoidable price of freedom, or is that the bigoted abuse of a disfavored minority for political gain? |

Insurance coverage backed by the National Rifle Association that would assist gun owners who later claimed self-defense in a shooting may no longer be sold in Washington state, regulators announced Tuesday.
Dubbed "murder insurance" by some gun control advocacy groups nationally, the policies became available in April 2017 through a website jointly run by the gun rights organization and insurance underwriting firms based in Kansas and Pennsylvania. Washington State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kriedler said in a news release Tuesday he would seek $177,000 in fines from the two companies and declared the plans in violation of state law. |

Current law allows people to use deadly force for self-defense in cases where a third party is likely to use “any unlawful force in the commission of a felony against the actor, within the actor’s dwelling.”
The amendment proposed in HB 208 would add “against the actor or another” to a particular section of the law, so that people would be authorized to use deadly force if they or anyone else is threatened in their home. |

The Firearms Policy Coalition on Wednesday sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stating their opposition to William Barr being confirmed as Attorney General. Their biggest objection to Barr is over his previously stated support for Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO), commonly referred to as "red flag laws," and his belief that "there is room for reasonable regulation" of the Second Amendment.
Specifically, Barr's 1991 confirmation hearing is what gun groups have cited as reasons for objecting to his current confirmation hearings: |

A Titusville man who spent three years in jail after being charged with knocking over a 65-year-old neighbor who later died has been granted immunity under Florida's "stand your ground" law.
The dismissal was the second homicide-related case in Brevard County to be dismissed by a judge because of the controversial 2005 law.
“The defendant has shown, by a preponderance of the evidence, that based on circumstances as they appeared to the defendant when he…acted, a reasonable and prudent person situated in the same circumstances…would have used the same force,” wrote Brevard Circuit Court Judge Robin Lemonidis in a motion issued Monday dismissing the case. |

A Cape Girardeau anti-crime activist is outraged that the community wasn't promptly notified that a 2015 shooting was solved without a murder charge.
The Southeast Missouri reports that Police Chief Wes Blair says the county prosecutor found "insufficient evidence to refute Jarvis Patterson's claim of self-defense" in the death of 42-year-old Howard Harris Smith Jr. But because Patterson wasn't supposed to have a gun because of his criminal record, he pleaded guilty in federal court to a gun charge. |

Kansas City foster parents are suing the state of Missouri, saying the government is restricting their right to possess or carry loaded firearms for self-defense.
James R. Attaway and Julie M. Attaway allege in the lawsuit that the firearms policy of the Missouri Department of Social Services violates their rights under the Missouri and U.S. constitutions.
Foster parents in Missouri are not prohibited from possessing firearms as long as they are legally allowed to do so otherwise. |

Afterwards, NRA will be holding a meeting in the Irv Newhouse Building conference room by the capitol at 12:00PM. Giving the public greater access to weapons has been one of Bolsonaro's flagship issues, and he had promised to take a hard line against criminality in a country where last year there were 63,880 known murders, an average of 175 per day.
Current law already permits people over age 25, without criminal records and with legal employment to own weapons once they prove that they are psychologically able to be trusted to possess them and can justify their need for them, requirements that now will be eased.
The measure does not - however - make it easier to carry weapons outside the home or, for instance, on the street. |

Jackson, Michigan’s own GSL Technology made a pen gun that mates to a suppressor and are exploring their options as to what to do with it.
Greg Latka, GSL’s founder, talks about the currently experimental GSL .380 Pen Gun.
