... "So how does one go about decrying this 'reasonable, common sense' proposal without appearing to favor stoned-out (or worse) substance abusers walking the streets with guns? Schumer is nothing if not smart and shrewd. He appears to have constructed an argument few would dare publicly oppose."

"How’s the line go? 'I’m your huckleberry.'”

Sen. Boxer would expand California-style 'gun-control' nationwide

... "California, unlike Illinois, does not ban defensive firearm carry outright, but, unlike Missouri, leaves issuance of a permit up to the discretion of the local police chief or sheriff. This means that in many cases, such permits are effectively impossible to get--except, perhaps, for cronies or generous supporters of the sheriff."

"Why should St. Louis area residents care about California law regarding defensive handgun carry permit issuance? Because United States Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) wants the federal government to overrule the laws of all 50 states, and export California's system nationwide ..." ...

"Immediately after especially galling acts of gun violence, such as the Jan. 8 tragedy in Tucson, Ariz., a cry goes out to place more restrictions on firearms ownership. At times like this, we even sometimes hear calls for outright bans on private ownership of handguns."

"Right on cue, various lawmakers across the country have announced legislation with the ostensible intent of reducing gun violence, citing the shootings of 19 people -- six of them fatalities -- in Tucson." ...

... "I own guns, and I support the responsible use of them. I learned how to use a gun responsibly as a young boy while hunting small game and deer with my dad. But why can’t we use this horrible incident to enact a few reasonable safeguards that probably would have prevented this tragedy or at least reduced its terrible toll?" ...

... "The idea of allowing the general public to carry handguns legally, openly or concealed, in public is, in my opinion, both dangerous and stupid. To regress to a 'Wild West' mentality, which was and is greatly exaggerated by pulp magazines, books and movies, is to revert to a 19th Century 'shoot first and ask questions later' society. ..." ...

"A review of federal law and regulations suggests that Arizona shooter Jared Loughner should have been blocked from buying the shotgun he obtained less than a year after his rejection from enlistment in the Army, and that his subsequent purchase of the Glock pistol he used to unleash a violent rampage in Tucson, Arizona violated the law's clear intent." ...

"Although I, myself, am not a hunter, many of my friends are. And my daughter is friends with many of my friends’ children. This means that there are times when my daughter will be playing at a home that houses a weapon, and I’ve never once stopped to ponder that fact. Until, that is, I read an article written by a mom who has one question for every set of parents whose children invite her son over to play."

"Like them or not, guns are as American as covered wagons and the infield-fly rule. The revolutionaries and pioneers who forged the nation and peopled its wilderness really did cling to their guns as tenaciously as they clung to their religion. And while modern cosmopolitans may be shocked by the gun violence in this country — the worst among wealthy nations by far — well, that's an American tradition too." ...

Submitter's Note: Nice weasel there with the specification of gun violence Mike. Because if we were just talking about violent crime, then the UK has more than double the assaults, sexual assaults and home invasion burglaries we have here in the US.

"Even in a nation where guns in some states are as easy to purchase as popcorn, the tragedy in Arizona, instigated by a mentally ill man seething with hatred for government, should at least lead to the resurrection of federal legislation lifted in 2004 that bans ownership of assault weapons."

"The NRA, representing gun manufacturers whose bottom lines are substantially enhanced by the sale of weapons with maximum killing potential, can make no cogent argument against this proposal. ..." ...

"Since the shootings of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 19 others in Arizona, most of the debate has tended to focus on questions of what more stringent gun-control measures are needed and how mentally unstable persons can be prohibited from purchasing weapons. I suggest we also re-examine what the authors of the Second Amendment had in mind by the word 'Arms' ..."

"Could they have had in mind a weapon like the Glock 19 semiautomatic handgun Jared Lee Loughner bought at the Sportsman's Warehouse outlet and used to fire off a full clip of 31 shots?" ...

Submitter's Note: Well, how about Mormonism. That wasn't 'invented' until decades after the founding. Blogs, online news sources, TV, radio, telephones, cell phones . . . claiming that the Bill of Rights doesn't cover things that hadn't been invented yet is a seriously slippery slope that you really do not want to start down.
Oh, and the term "Arms"? According to GunCite.com "In Colonial times "arms" usually meant weapons that could be carried. This included knives, swords, rifles and pistols."

"My husband and son both hunt deer on our land. Many people deplore the idea of hunting, but I eat meat, wear leather, deplore the ecological damage of an outsized deer population, and trust the wisdom of our hunters. But the fact that our family buys gun licenses every year doesn’t mean that I sympathize with the National Rifle Association propaganda that gets sent to our house. I’ve yet to agree with them on any presidential or other candidate, and they’ve recently redefined the meaning of irresponsibility with their staunch defense of high-capacity gun magazines." ...

"In yesterday's Steyr Arms overview, Gunnutmegger claimed that the Styr M40-A1 handgun is a 'worthy alternative to their most direct competitor: Glock.' Worthy yes, but why bother? There's not a lot in it. The Styr is Austrian as in made-in-Austria. The Glock is Austrian as in 'We make perfection in the Peachtree state.' Ethnocentricity aside, there are only two appreciable, in-the-hand differences between these dead nuts reliable weapons: the trigger and the sights." ...

"If you're trying to master all the variable variables that make long-distance shooting such an engrossing challenge, you want ammo that’s more consistent than the panel gaps on a Bugatti Veyron. Given that premium ammo makers work to SAMMI spec and rely on post-game inspections to detect defective loads, even the best factory ammo may fail to scratch that OCD itch. You might also have a hankering something that's not on the premium bullet makers' ballistic menu: something involving ultra-precise, weight-measured powder charges. While some precision shooters enjoy hand-loading these magic cartridges, others consider it a PITA. For them, Setpoint Ammunition is a godsend . . ." ...

"Will the Tucson massacre change Arizona? Perhaps, if an extraordinary event on Jan. 10 at the beginning of the state's legislative session last week is an indication. Knowing there is a group or individual that caused such an event is cathartic. Attention can be focused and debate can be based more on information than conjecture."
