A crowd of about 100 people, many of them armed and focused on gun rights, gathered peacefully outside the Texas Capitol gates for a few hours Sunday in a scene that is fairly common in downtown Austin at the beginning of a legislative session and unlike authorities' worst-case scenario fears that protests could turn violent during the weekend.

In the early 1980s, the hottest thing going for competitive handgunners was IHMSA. That stands for International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association. It was a long-range shooting sport in which the targets were the silhouettes of game animals cut from steel plate and placed in banks of five at 50, 100, 150 and 200 meters.

For those who love big bore revolvers, the .454 Casull (pronounced like KA-sool) is often a favorite. Longer than the .45 Long Colt and much more powerful, this ammunition spent more than half of its life as a popular wildcat, not becoming a standard, factory round until it’d been in the handloader arena for over 40 years.
