"Attorney General-designate Alberto Gonzales offered an equivocal answer this month when asked if U.S. personnel could engage in torture under certain circumstances."
"'I don't believe so, but I'd want to get back to you on that,' the White House counsel told Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., during a daylong confirmation hearing that focused on the Bush administration's interrogation policies for terrorism suspects and Iraqi prisoners." ...
"Offering his views in response to other questions submitted by committee members, Gonzales:" ...

"Citing his brother Tony's work as a Houston SWAT officer, attorney general nominee Alberto Gonzales told the Senate in writing Tuesday that he supports extending the expired federal assault weapons ban."
"'I worry about his safety and the types of weapons he (Tony) will confront on the street,' Gonzales said. 'The president has made it clear that he stands ready to sign a reauthorization of the federal assault weapons ban if it is sent to him by Congress. I, of course, support the president on this issue.'"
"Anti-gun groups criticized President Bush during the campaign last year for failing to press for an extension of the ban."

... "As we should realize, illegal use of firearms has little to do with legal possession of firearms. The Centre for Defence Studies in London, showed that criminal use of handguns increased by 40% in the two years immediately after their 1997 ban on handguns. It is now believed there are over 300,000 firearms in Britain, which are readily accessible to anyone with murder on their minds. When Anne Pearston, a leader in the anti-gun campaign was presented with these figures, she dismissed them with, 'But this completely misses the point of what we were trying to do. We never thought that there would be any effect on illegal gun crime, because this is a totally separate issue. What we were campaigning for was to make sure that a civilian could not be legally trained to use a handgun.' It makes one wonder." ... |

Lane County Prosecutor Doug Harcleroad announced late today that James Winkelman will not face criminal charges in the death of Todd Alan Hughes.
Police say Winkelman shot Hughes to death on January 11, near 13th and Garfield. The statement from Harcleroad reads "...our analysis of the facts of this case leads us to believe that the shooting of Mr. Hughes, although tragic, was a justified act. The use of deadly physical force by Mr. Winkelman is justified as self-defense because Mr. Hughes was about to use unlawful deadly force against Mr. Winkelman at the time he was shot."
The grand jury heard two and a-half hours of testimony from ten witnesses before reaching its decision. |

A Granite School District police officer has been charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, for shooting a man with his service pistol last October.
Officer Richard Todd Rasmussen, 44, was chasing a man suspected of driving a stolen car Oct. 20. Anthony Chavez abandoned the car he was driving, jumped a fence and ran into the backyard of a house.
Rasmussen fired a shot, striking Chavez in the left thigh.
According to the Salt Lake County district attorney's office, Rasmussen was not threatened, and did not believe that Chavez was armed. He told investigators he fired at Chavez because he feared that the suspect would take his gun. He said Chavez lunged toward him when he fired the shot. |
