"Amar, author of a previous book on the Bill of Rights, grounds the issue, as he does throughout, in vivid historical context. He notes the rapid diminishment of the need for a civilian militia, a precaution initially intended as the states' security against a military dictatorship -- the sheer inconceivability of which now 'ranks among our greatest blessings of liberty.' And he suggests that the right to bear arms ... is not language generally applied to deer hunters and target shooters." ... |

By RICK LEVANDOWSKI Independence, Wis.
I’m gratified to see our legislators here in Wisconsin "Get It" finally.
We all know the response times to crime by law enforcement here in the rural areas of the midwest much less is it guaranteed by the Constitution despite being a taxpayer. The passage of concealed carry is the re-affirmation of the Second Amendment and the God-given right to self-preservation will no doubt lead to less crime because criminals won’t know who’s armed and who’s a willing victim.
The biggest hurdle now will be the Madison Beltway mindset and the mighty (albeit over-worked of late) veto pen of Jim Doyle. Let’s pull together to protect our rural way of life and urge the signing of this bill into law. |

"The governor's initiatives to rid our streets of illegal guns and harshly punish those who use guns in the commission of a crime are worthy of praise. These are common sense approaches to reducing crime. ... However, I disagree with the way these initiatives are being portrayed since they are not about 'gun control,' but are about 'criminal control.'"
"First, get the illegal guns away from the criminals. Second, encourage and support the right of law-abiding citizens to own and carry concealed handguns for personal protection. New York needs to follow the lead of almost 40 other states in the nation that have 'shall issue' laws that allow unrestricted concealed handguns carry." ... |

A few days before Christmas, a friend of mine made a purchase from a very well- known local firearms dealer - walked in with cash in hand and walked out with a pistol a few minutes later.
No check was made to see if my friend could legally purchase a firearm.
The fact is, my friend suffered from severe depression and if a background check had been made, the dealer would have seen that a block from buying firearms had been placed on this person.
After leaving the store, my friend went home and committed suicide with the newly purchased pistol. The police found the receipt for it on the dining room table.
This brings up some very real concerns for all of us.
Rhoda Bearb
Lafayette -------
Submitter's Note: If the facts presented here are correct, then the dealer broke numerous laws, and could face civil liability in addition to criminal charges. But much as she might want to assuage her guilt by blaming him, the dealer is not responsible for Ms. Bearb's friend's suicide, as numerous studies have shown that access to a gun has no bearing on suicide rates. |
