NY: Baby Steps Are Not Enough

October 1, 2017, isn’t that long ago when you think about it. That date is memorable because it was a day when 59 innocent people were gunned down by a deranged shooter at a music festival. The shooting captured the attention of people around the world because it was the largest mass murder in American history.

The average citizen can’t do much to avoid another such tragedy because we lack the power to stop such an event from happening. However, there is one group that could be effective in stopping a future mass killing if only they cared enough to do something. I refer to the members of the U.S. Congress.

This is not your father’s diaper bag.

The dreaded purple diaper bag has gone camo — and macho — and the rowdy concept landed two 32-year-old guys from the Hilton Head Island High School class of 2003 on the front page of the Wall Street Journal last week.

Tactical Baby Gear was founded on Hilton Head about five years ago by Stephen “Beav” Brodie. He quickly partnered with Alex Kristoff, chief operating officer, in a bootstrap, online-only business they say is tripling or quadrupling in sales year-over-year.

WA: Crossing the Line – Firearm Preemption Protection Under Attack

Gun control groups are fond of describing preemption as a doctrine whereby a state has stripped local governments of their power to regulate guns. In fact, under established legal principles, localities are subordinate “creatures of state law,” with no inherent rights or powers other than what a state decides to delegate to them through statutes or charters. Although some local governments may be delegated an authority to regulate public safety and welfare (“police power”) as broad as that exercised by the granting state itself, this power retains its essential character as delegated authority and is limited both by the corporate boundaries of the locality and any restrictions on its exercise that may be imposed by the state.

DC: Hundreds apply to carry loaded, concealed handguns in D.C.

More than 700 people have asked the D.C. police for licenses to carry loaded concealed handguns when they dine, shop and walk the streets of the nation’s capital. In the months since a court ordered city officials to scale back local gun-control laws, police department records show that more than half the applicants are not District of Columbia residents.

The loosening of the law marks a cultural shift in a city where most residents could not legally keep handguns in their homes until a landmark Supreme Court decision a decade ago. City officials have long fought efforts to chip away at D.C.’s strict controls since the high court used a local case in 2008 to declare that an individual has a right to gun ownership.

We are mid-way through January 2018 which means Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has ignored national reciprocity for 45 consecutive weeks.

National reciprocity for concealed carry introduced in the Senate on March 1, 2017 and McConnell has yet to say a word in support of it. His silence is ironic, given the fact that he cloaked himself in the Second Amendment in order to sway pro-gun Kentuckians into re-electing him in 2014.

On Thursday, McClatchy dropped a heckuva scoop: The FBI is investigating whether Russia illegally funneled campaign funds to the NRA as part of the country’s effort to influence the 2016 presidential election.

The NRA spent more than any other outside group to elect Donald Trump and other Republicans, shelling out $55 million (and maybe in excess of $70 million, according to two sources McClatchy spoke with, when undisclosed spending on online ads and grassroots outreach are factored in). Federal investigators want to know if the gun group illegally got some of those funds via a Kremlin-connected oligarch named Alexander Torshin.

People convicted of a hate crime won't be able to buy or possess guns in Kentucky if the Legislature passes a new bill filed by state Rep. Attica Scott this year.

A person may serve time behind bars after physically attacking someone based on their race, religion or another aspect of their identity, but that doesn't mean the hate in their heart has been erased, said Scott, a Louisville Democrat.

A welder and reality television star best known for customizing motorcycles and hosting the reality show Monster Garage has crafted a customized .45 caliber pistol that he’s hoping to sell to President Donald Trump.

“I think it’s pretty much the Law. If you build guns and your friend becomes President. You build him a Badass gun!” wrote Jesse James, who also appeared on the second season of Trump’s The Celebrity Apprentice, on Instagram Thursday.

James got to know Trump during taping of the show and placed third in the contest after being eliminated in the second-to-last episode that aired in May 2009.

But a surge in gun sales and a reduction in funding for the program has stymied efforts by the state Department of Justice to eliminate a backlog of people in California who have firearms and shouldn’t. Approximately 10,226 people remain on a list of Californians who legally purchased guns but were later disqualified from possessing them

Now, a new law is giving law enforcement officials hope that greater headway can be made in disarming Californians who are ineligible to own guns.

“If your permit was issued before January 15, 2013, the deadline to submit your recertification is January 31, 2018. If your permit was issued on or after January 15, 2013, the deadline to recertify is five years after the date the permit was issued. As a permit holder, it is your responsibility to recertify your permit whether you receive a notification letter or not.”

The above quote was taken directly from the New York State Government SAFE Act website; https://safeact.ny.gov/pistol-permit-recertification.

I’m providing it to you at the outset so pistol permit holders who have not yet filed their recertification have the most accurate information of what is required.

There is no fiddling with the statistics.

According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report, handguns are used in the overwhelming majority of murders in the United States. Insider Online looked at data all the way back to 2011, and the numbers don’t lie.

In 2011, handguns were specifically identified as the murder weapon in 6,251 of the 8,653 firearms-related slayings. The following year, they were the guns of choice in 6,404 of the 8,897 murders involving firearms. Jump ahead to 2013, and murderers used handguns in 5,782 killings and in 2014, handguns were identified in 5,673 criminal fatalities. In 2016 — the most recent year for which FBI data is available — handguns were involved in 7.105 of the reported 11,004 gun-related murders.

Locking panties, man-repelling bracelets: Is this what the women of 2018 need?

In the promised reckoning over sexual assault, harassment and rape culture, a bracelet probably wasn’t the solution the women of 2018 were hoping for.

But here it is. Last week, a Dutch start-up announced the sale of the Invi bracelet, the latest in a long line of odd implements designed for fending off would-be rapists. When the wearer gives it a tug, the Invi releases a pungent stench that Invi’s founder, Roel van der Kamp, likens to a skunk’s perfume.

Among the hundreds of bills filed for the 2018 General Assembly, there are two that illustrate the debate over guns in Kentucky.

One bill gives communities the option of passing their own gun laws. The other removes restrictions already in place.

Ilya Chernyavskiy has a license to carry a concealed weapon and said he should not have to give up that right when he goes to class at the University of Louisville.

“If you're not a criminal, if you're not a bad member of society, I don't think there should be a reason why you are prohibited having means of self-defense,” he said.

WA: Substitute Version of Gun Control Bill Passes House Committee

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee passed Substitute House Bill 1122 out of committee on a 7-6 vote. This bill, which would require gun owners to lock up their firearms or potentially face criminal charges, will now head to the House floor to await full consideration. It is critical you contact your state Representative and urge them to OPPOSE the Substitute for House Bill 1122!

The Substitute for House Bill 1122 would require the locking up of one’s firearms or else they would potentially face reckless endangerment charges. This intrusive government legislation invades people’s homes and forces them to render their firearms useless in a self-defense situation by locking them up.

The 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution puts an exclamation point on American exceptionalism. Thanks to the timeless wisdom of the Founding Fathers, we are supported in our natural right to protect ourselves.

That’s really what the second amendment is about – protection. America is the only country in the world that firmly supports its law-abiding citizens in their right to bear arms as a means to doing so.

Republicans get this unique equation for citizen empowerment and we back it up with action.

Immediately after Sandy Hook, I felt a calling to get involved in advocacy to prevent gun violence. Via Facebook, I connected with a few other moms in the Austin area and from around the state who were committed to doing the same. Together, we helped create the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. At the time, we had one simple goal: Protect our children by standing up to the gun lobby’s radical agenda and proving once and for all that Texans support common-sense gun safety policies.

Thomas O'Neill, an Air Force veteran and an assistant pastor for multiple North Dakota churches, said on Friday that he plans to seek a U.S. Senate seat in 2018, for which he will run as a Republican.

O'Neill, who lives in Niagara in far northeast North Dakota., plans to launch his campaign on Tuesday. He is running a one-man campaign on guns, immigration and the federal budget.

"I think I can do a better job than the people that are up there now," he said, explaining that he disagrees with laws he says infringe on the Second Amendment.
