"Though he owns a lot of guns, loves to hunt and spent 38 years in the military, Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark is generally opposed to letting citizens carry concealed handguns." ...
" 'It's OK if you're a detective on the police force,' Clark continued. 'But I don't see a requirement for ordinary citizens to carry concealed weapons.' "
------- Clark is what's called a "constitutionally challenged elitist." It's little wonder many who served with or under him had no respect for him. He isn't even aware of the Constitution he swore to uphold and defend as a soldier. |

"Howard Dean proudly claims to have been endorsed by the National Rifle Association, and indeed it is true that the NRA's Political Victory Fund (PVF) endorsed Dean in his re-election bid for governor of Vermont in 2000. But NRA members know that an endorsement by NRA-PVF in one election is not an endorsement forever. Endorsements are made based on several criteria specific to individual elections, including candidates` statements, voting records and other pertinent information. Dean was endorsed based on his position on issues specific to Vermont that were current at that time." |

"The most egregious gun lobby-sponsored provision would drastically reduce the time that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) can retain records of approved gun sales -- from the current 90 days to a maximum of 24 hours. A June 2002 General Accounting Office (GAO) study conducted for Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) found that 228 of the 235 (97 percent) firearm retrievals initiated during the first six months of the current 90-day rule could not have been done under a 24-hour rule. Simply put, that means that 228 prohibited persons (i.e. felons, persons convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors, fugitives, etc.) would have been able to keep their illegal guns."
------- While it's expected that the VPC is trying to avoid irrelevancy by claiming that it's the firearms provisions that stalled this huge, pork-laden monster, fact remains that there were a host of issues that caused the bill to be blocked, and firearms issues aren't even mentioned.
"Democrats are angry over provisions related to food labeling, overtime pay, media ownership rules and other issues, and some fiscal conservatives are upset with the bill's cost." |

School gun safety programs don't work. That's the finding of a study in the journal Pediatrics.
Those safety programs fail when taught in a place where children would not encounter a gun, researchers find.
Researchers found better success when simulations were done in children's homes, or another place they might encounter a gun.
In a recent test in a home setting, 10-children who were taught not to touch the gun, but find an adult. Eight-out-of-10 children did the right thing, left the gun alone and found a grown-up.
------- This is confirmation of a simple rule responsible gun owners already follow: teaching children gun safety is the responsibility of every parent. Do not rely on government schools to do the teaching for you. |

A would-be burglar is dead after the owner of the home he was trying to break into shot him.
