Filmmaker Michael Moore's bodyguard was arrested for carrying an unlicensed weapon in New York's JFK airport Wednesday night.
Police took Patrick Burke, who says Moore employs him, into custody after he declared he was carrying a firearm at a ticket counter. Burke is licensed to carry a firearm in Florida and California, but not in New York. Burke was taken to Queens central booking and could potentially be charged with a felony for the incident.
Moore's 2003 Oscar-winning film "Bowling for Columbine" criticizes what Moore calls America's "culture of fear" and its obsession with guns. |

"UPDATE: A statement is being distributed by a security firm that says it employs the man who, according to FOXNews, identified himself to police as being employed by Michael Moore."
"The statement does not deny that this person has been assigned to Michael Moore in the past, nor that he told police that he was employed by Moore, but does clarify that the bodyguard was not protecting Moore when he was arrested for carrying a firearm in his luggage without a license to carry a firearm in New York City." |

"Federal authorities have launched a campaign to crack down on people buying guns for criminals and those too young to legally purchase one, U.S. attorneys announced Thursday."
"U.S. Attorney Leura Canary of Montgomery said the campaign would educate firearms retailers on how to detect and deter the false — or 'straw' — purchases by people with clean criminal records who then pass them to convicts or underage youths."
"Canary said federal gun-related crimes in the Middle District of Alabama tripled from fiscal year 2002 to fiscal year 2003. While statistics on straw purchases were not available, Canary said it was 'a real problem in our country.' " |

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has proposed a sweeping ban on handguns to try to stop an increase in homicides.
By doing so, the traditionally liberal city has injected itself into the national debate over gun control.
The proposal would bar residents from keeping handguns in their homes or businesses and prohibit the sale, manufacture and distribution of any firearms or ammunition in San Francisco.
Washington and Chicago are the only other major U-S cities with handgun bans. Both faced quick court challenges. The national gun lobby already has vowed to challenge San Francisco's ban if voters approve it.
The supervisor who proposed the ban says he and his counterparts already have received threatening calls and e-mails from gun supporters. |

"The introduction of the .458 was a watershed event that changed the face of American sporting arms forever, and it had almost nothing to do with the cartridge's demonstrated effectiveness on African game."
"The impact of the .458 was that it sired a new class of American magnum cartridges suitable for .30-06-length actions, including the .338 and .264 Winchester Magnums, and their success spawned the 7mm Remington Magnum. The high muzzle velocity offered by these new cartridges caught the imagination of American shooters, and 'magnumania' was born." |

"Since 2000, New York State has developed and implemented a ballistic imaging database designed to help law enforcement track firearms used in the commission of a crime."
"Since 2000, New York has wasted approximately $16 million with that program."
"New York's ballistic imaging database, or ballistic fingerprinting program, was designed to assist law enforcement by requiring that a fired bullet and empty cartridge casing from every gun legally sold in the state be submitted to the New York State Police for entry into a vast database. The program utilizes computer technology to match pre-sale ballistics data with crime scene data. To date, the program has yet to yield any results after thousands of data points have been collected and four year of bureaucracy and wasted effort." |
