Crowding capitol campuses across the country, including a major turnout in Olympia, America’s gun owners took the offensive Saturday against what they view as extremist gun control measures now proposed at the federal and state levels.

Although the Seattle Times estimated only “about 1,000” people at the Olympia turnout, other estimates varied, ranging to the more than 2,000 by KOMO. Examiner was there, and it appeared the KOMO estimate was far more accurate.

The powerful gun lobby apparently had its silencer on in its battle against Gov. Cuomo. Thousands of firearm owners turned out at “Gun Appreciation Day” rallies across the state on Saturday, denouncing Gov. Cuomo and decrying his new gun control law. It was a surprising spectacle, considering that in the weeks and days leading up to the Legislature’s passage of the sweeping reform bill last week, ardent Second Amendment supporters were nowhere to be seen. “It goes against past experience,” Assemblyman Micah Kellner, a Manhattan Democrat who voted for the bill, said of the pro-gun paradox in Albany. “There was plenty of time to be there and be heard.”

Go to State Sen. Mark J. Grisanti’s campaign Facebook page and you’ll find the usual: photos of the Buffalo Republican, a link to donate money and various tidbits of information. And then there are these comments from his Facebook “friends”: “A disgrace to all Republicans in your district.” “You should be convicted of treason.” “Have fun ever trying to get re-elected.” “You should step down in shame.” “You sold out.” “Traitor.” And those are the ones that can be printed in this newspaper.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is no doubt a student of the Rahm Emanuel School of Better Government where the motto is “you never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” His gusto for over-preparedness and over-reaction — which really isn’t a very endearing leadership trait – seen throughout his term (perhaps as a means to market himself as presidential material) was realized yet again as he and his team, in an effort to beat Washington to the punch, forced legislation through the Albany Machine that, in response to the Newtown shootings, allegedly makes New York a much safer place by preventing criminals from possessing firearms and ammunition.

Assault-rifle owners statewide are organizing a mass boycott of Gov. Cuomo’s new law mandating they register their weapons, daring officials to “come and take it away,” The Post has learned. Gun-range owners and gun-rights advocates are encouraging hundreds of thousands of owners to defy the law, saying it’d be the largest act of civil disobedience in state history.

Authorities say an accidental shooting at an Ohio gun show has left one man wounded.
Police in Medina (meh-DEYE'-nuh) say a gun dealer was checking out a semi-automatic handgun he'd bought Saturday when he accidentally pulled the trigger.
Police Chief Pat Berarducci (BEHR'-uh-doo-chee) says it appears the bullet struck the floor, then a longtime friend of the gun dealer. The man was wounded in the arm and leg.
Berarducci says the man was taken by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital. His condition isn't known.
Police say the gun's magazine had been removed from the firearm but one round remained in the chamber.
Medina is about 30 miles south of Cleveland.

Cozee was transported to Wishard Hospital for treatment.
State police say the investigation determined the shooting to be accidental and no charges will be filed.

Activists promoted the "Guns Across America" rallies primarily through social media. They were being held just after President Barack Obama unveiled a sweeping package of federal gun-control proposals.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sat down with HuffPost Live Friday, where he made a noteworthy statement about the rapidly-growing National Rifle Association.
Responding to interviewer Alicia Menendez’s question about whether Schumer’s colleagues are “willing to admit” that the NRA is a “fringe group,” the senator responded: “Well they sure are a fringe group, but whether enough of my colleagues are ready to admit that, I’m not sure.”
He continued: “They are a very extreme group. They don’t even represent average gun holders.”
The two proceeded to discuss certain gun control measures and Schumer’s intention to “push hard” to get them passed.

The State of New York this week passed some of the strictest gun control laws in the United States, effectively outlawing 'assault weapons' and limiting the size of magazines.

Submitters note: And we gun owners are paranoid... the gun controllers are showing their true agenda... Our Full autos were banned in 1986 and now its the semi's then the rest will follow incrementally. Total disarment of the civilian population. Then self defense will be made illegal which is immoral because it exist in nature. As has been done in many nations that have banned sufficent arms which can be used for self defense. Look at history registration leads to confinscation which leads to democide and tyranny.

“Do not patronize the passionate supporters of your opponents by looking down your nose at them,” Clinton said.

Clinton closed his remarks with a warning to big Democratic donors that ultimately many Democratic lawmakers will be defeated if they choose to stand with the president.

“Do not be self-congratulatory about how brave you for being for this” gun control push, he said. “The only brave people are the people who are going to lose their jobs if they vote with you.”

As J.D. Tuccille noted this morning, "universal background checks" are emerging as a leading contender for the something that must be done by Congress in response to last month's massacre at Sandy Hook Elemenetary School. "There's a natural gravity that happens toward the ['assault weapon'] ban in the wake of tragedies," Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, tells The New York Times. “But it's very important to point out that background checks could have an even bigger impact."

It happened Saturday at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show, a quarterly event that usually draws thousands of people to the fairgrounds in Raleigh.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and two people were loaded into ambulances.

Even as New York's liberal tide rose when Gov. Andrew Cuomo furthered his progressive agenda with the passage of this week's gun control law, there were signs of a new and feisty, if small, conservative corps in Albany. They are often brash, many are new to Albany, and unlike most in New York politics today, they seem unafraid of and unimpressed by the Democratic governor, a popular figure with whom most Republicans have forged an alliance. Their voices rose last week against Cuomo's assault rifle ban in a gun control package that was the first in the nation after December's elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

A 5-year-old Pennsylvania girl who told another girl she was going to shoot her with a pink Hello Kitty toy gun that blows soapy bubbles has been suspended from kindergarten.
Her family has hired an attorney to fight the punishment, which initially was 10 days for issuing a 'terroristic threat.' But her punishment was reduced to two days after her mother met with school officials and had the incident dropped to 'threatening to harm another student,' which apparently carries a lesser punishment.

Some 600 attendees in Austin, Texas, carried signs bearing messages such as "An Armed Society is a Polite Society" and "The Second Amendment Comes from God." The "Guns Across America" rallies, which activists promoted primarily via social media, also followed New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's signing this week of the nation's toughest assault weapon and magazine restrictions.

NYSRPA, in co-operation with the NRA, are having the Cuomo law reviewed by a highly qualified legal team. We ask that no other 3rd party legal action be taken without prior consultation. We realize that this law impacts a large number of people, but a proper legal review will take some time. NYSRPA/NRA will be filing a Notice of Claim prior to submitting a brief on the merits of the constitutionality of the new gun law. Involved in the lawsuit will be two of the nations best 2nd Amendment attorneys. This is a very important proceeding and must be handled properly with the best lawyers.

Although such a program probably would not have stopped Adam Lanza from massacring 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month, the Bureau of Firearms agents undoubtedly have saved lives.

They have seized more than 10,000 owned firearms since 2007, including 2,000 guns last year, almost 120,000 rounds of ammunition and 11,000 illegal high-capacity magazines. Attorney General Kamala Harris said she is trying to figure out how to double the unit's size.
