AZ: AJ schools' gun-safety program enlists help of students

"Lock up one gun, save one life."

"School officials in Apache Junction hope an innovative gun-safety program will have students holding their parents accountable for keeping guns and ammunition out of reach."

"Funded in part by a $25,000 Project Safe Neighborhoods grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, the program will teach each student in the district to make Mom and Dad aware of gun dangers at home through what they learn in the classroom."

-------
This is absolutely repugnant! The school is indoctrinating its students into the "lock up your tools of self-defense" mentality, teaching them to be afraid of firearms, instead of having a healthy respect for them, and teaching them to rely upon mechanical gadgets, instead of their common sense and responsibility for their safety.

What's worse, it's encouraging kids to bring this destructive mentality home to their parents!

Your tax dollars at work.

GA: Police officer shot by own weapon at elementary school

According to this story, the pistol decided to shoot the officer of its own volition.

The headline SHOULD read:

"Incompetent Police Officer Shoots Himself with His Own Weapon at Elementary School."

-------
"A police officer arriving at an elementary school to teach a Drug Awareness and Resistance Education class was accidentally shot in the left leg by his own gun as he was getting out of his patrol car Tuesday, officials said."

"Officer Duke Fontenot was taken to Tanner Medical Center-Carrollton, where he was treated for the wound behind Carrollton Elementary School about 1:30 p.m." ...

"Under police department rules, no guns are worn in the elementary school, and Fontenot had taken the weapon from his holster and put it on the car seat when it went off, the superintendent said."

-------
This helps explain why so many short-sighted Police Chiefs are anti-conceal carry permits. They are judging citizens by the police performance.

"A crazed straphanger bit off the thumb of a 71-year-old Queens man and chewed his grandson's face during a wild attack in a packed rush-hour subway car, police said yesterday."

"The nightmare on the Flushing-bound 7 train began at 5 p.m. Monday when a disheveled and drunken man jumped 18-year-old Jose Velez, ripped off his own shirt and screamed, 'I'm bad. You're nothing. I'm a bada--.' "

Mayors of Chicago, Gary criticize gun suit ban

"Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley on Wednesday called on Congress to reject legislation that would ban local governments from suing the gun industry over the sale of firearms that land in the hands of criminals."

"Daley, together with Mayor Scott King of Gary, Ind., lashed out at a House-approved measure that is before the Senate, arguing it would effectively dismiss lawsuits the cities have filed against some gun manufacturers in state courts."

-------
Yes, that's right. It would. Why should you use the courts to force legitimate business to take responsibility for the fact that you cannot effectively protect your citizens and have made your cities into safe havens for criminals.

"There is no right to privacy in the Constitution. No one back then imagined that the Constitution would be used to assert a right to deceive others. Nowhere is it written that there is some convenient privilege to pick up and leave behind obligations voluntarily assumed and fail to reveal those liabilities to our new circle of acquaintance No one imagined a world where a sexual predator would be released from prison and move next door to you and your child without your knowledge."

"Such an idea would have astonished the Founders. A person was their word, and a signed piece of paper could not change the moral bankruptcy of the individual who defaulted."

"A 31-page report (Selling Crime, High Crime Gun Stores Fuel Criminals) issued recently by AGS and reported in Saturday's Chronicle shakes an accusing finger at 120 U.S. gun dealers who sold at least 200 firearms traced to some sort of criminal activity from 1996-2000. (The most recent statistics.)"

"Note that 'traced to crime' doesn't necessarily mean 'traced to violent crime.' If I report a gun stolen, the store that sold me the gun years ago gets a mark next to its name. If a law enforcement agency runs a routine check on a firearm and turns up nothing, that check may generate a mark against the original seller."

"I am puzzled now by the strange way people here are dealing with mountain lions — which is to say, letting them kill you."

"When the State Duma passed amendments to the Criminal Code's section on self-defense in February 2002, it seemed as if a big step had been taken toward developing civilized legislation in the country. Just a few new lines in the code meant more than 2,000 people who were jailed for killing their assailants in self-defense were freed."

" 'Any sort of [physical] harm caused to an assailant is not a crime,' the amendment says."

"The Yabloko deputies who wrote the law hoped that the number of assaults and robberies would fall significantly after the amendment came into force, since potential attackers would be aware they could be killed by their victims."

"It is not clear, however, whether the deputies' hopes were misplaced or not, because the police lie when they report crimes and so no one knows what the true crime statistics are."

"Less than a week after a Chicago police detective gave dramatic testimony in the case of accused cop-killer James Scott, a seemingly contradictory police memo has surfaced, temporarily halting Scott's trial."

"The memo was sent by prosecutors to defense attorneys Saturday night. It shows that hours after Officer John Knight was fatally shot, his partner told a supervisor that Scott stood over him with his gun drawn, yelled an expletive, then ran before the two exchanged gunfire."

"On the witness stand last week, James Butler told a different story--that Scott stood over him, but pulled the trigger of his gun twice, only to have it jam. It was after the gun jammed, Butler said, that Scott shouted the expletive and ran."

The measure has been approved by the House and is pending before the Senate as part of a huge spending bill for the federal government. It is expected to pass later this month.

"It had been falling since November 2002, they said."

"After the last data, ministers expressed concerns about levels of violent crime overall."

"Levels rose 9% in the three months from April to June to 272,900 offences, compared with 249,500 in the same period the year before."

"More serious attacks such as major assaults and homicides rose 7% to 10,300."

"The federal government should scrap plans to rein in spending on Canada's $1-billion gun registry because there's almost no room for more cuts, says the president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police."

"Edgar MacLeod told a news conference Wednesday that spending problems identified by the federal auditor general have already been addressed. 'It is expensive, but when you look at the costs, there's not much room anymore for manoeuvring that we could see,' said MacLeod."

"He added that until someone comes up with a better way of registering and controlling firearms, the current system must be maintained to ensure public safety."

-------
What "public safety"! Registering guns has never led to lower crime rates. But it has led to confiscation and tyranny.

"The Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) recently reversed itself and said it would publish personal information -- including e-mail addresses, mailing addresses, and phone numbers -- of those who had commented on a government proceeding in 2003."

"That back-flip rankled Richard Hunter, a research director with Gartner who tracks privacy issues."

" 'That's just not acceptable,' he said. 'To unilaterally renege on a promise because it's not convenient doesn't strike me as a good precedent.' "

"The TTB's decision, based strictly on convenience, is one, that if taken by a private firm, would draw the attention, and likely the ire, of consumers and governmental regulatory agencies alike, said Hunter."

"Paul McIntyre was yesterday committed to trial on two charges for his actions in confronting Samuel Hati and Ned and Raymond Brown when they tried to steal the vehicle."

"The Whangae man said he would plead not guilty to the charges, laid under the Crimes Act and the Arms Act."

"One was for shooting and injuring 30-year-old Moerewa farm worker Samuel Hati with reckless disregard for the safety of others."

"McIntyre fired a shot that went through the back of the ute cab and hit Hati in the back of the neck."

"He was also charged with discharging a shotgun without reasonable cause while disregarding the safety of others."

"Patron has been at Bell's Gun & Sport Shop since a new owner took over for Universal in May 2002."

"Patron said a gun-shop owner could follow all laws involving the sale of guns to the letter and still end up having items used in crimes."

" 'Bad people will do bad things,' he said. 'Obviously, if someone walked in and said they wanted to buy a gun to do something bad with it, you wouldn't sell to them.' "

"But as long as procedures are followed, and we get an approval from the State Police after they're called, there's really no way for a gun shop to control what happens when the gun leaves the store."

"A three-member Conservative committee yesterday heard a pitch from Dale Blue, president of the Responsible Firearms Owners of Alberta."

"His group brought forward, 'ideas and innovative ways that they think we might be able to attack this problem,' said Jacobs, which includes enshrining Albertans' right to bear arms indefinitely due to the province's cultural heritage."

" 'We've shown the (provincial) government the federal firearms registration legislation is still an issue in Alberta, and will be,' Blue said. 'The bottom line is we've identified a problem, and we're hoping for what help we can get from the Alberta government to help resolve it.' "

-------
The provinces recognize it doesn't work, when will the Federal government?

"Shooting birds is prohibited in Jacksonville now that the city has been declared a bird sanctuary."

"The City Council unanimously passed the measure Tuesday night in the wake of recent reports by residents of the Wilson Bay area of hunters firing near their homes."

"According to city officials, some thought the city was already a bird sanctuary, while local law enforcement wondered just had jurisdiction in the bay."

"The bird sanctuary's boundaries and the shooting ban cover all of Wilson Bay and some waters bordering Marine Corps installations at Camp Geiger, Camp Johnson and Camp Lejeune, which the city annexed in the early 1990s, city attorney John Carter said."

"Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas – known as 'Mr. Constitution' on Capitol Hill for his strict adherence to the document when voting on legislation – won't face any challengers for his House seat this year since he was the only person to file for the race."

"The deadline to file in his 14th Congressional District was Friday."

This should put to rest any doubt that a politician cannot get elected on integrity. They can, but they choose not to.

"The war on terrorism has been President Bush's strong suit since the Sept. 11 attacks, and he still sees that issue as a political winner."

"America is committed to keeping the world's most dangerous weapons out of the hands of the world's most dangerous regimes..."

-------
Apparently the people of the United States are now a "dangerous regime." After all, President Bush doesn't want us to have SURs (Sport Utility Rifles).

"Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear, kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor with the cry of 'grave national emergency.' Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it." ~ General Douglas Macarthur, 1957

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Many politicians are in the habit of laying it down as a self-evident proposition, that no people ought to be free till they are fit to use their freedom. The maxim is worthy of the fool in the old story, who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim. If men are to wait for liberty till they become wise and good in slavery, they may indeed wait forever. — LORD THOMAS MACAULAY
