"A study published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine is being touted by 'gun control' supporters in and out of 'legitimate media' as conclusive proof that, rather than making people safer, gun ownership actually places them at greater risk for suicide and homicide."

"As is typical with such publications, it only looks at (less than) half of the equation, disregarding the substantial number of defensive gun uses that occur each year. Without comparing that, the number of people who didn’t die because they had a gun is excluded from the totals. ..." ...

Press hypocrisy? When an evil gun becomes acceptable

"Tuesday morning’s press coverage of Monday night’s shooting of a man by a Seattle police officer after reportedly waving a handgun around at a bus stop reveals either local media hypocrisy or the attainment of understanding about the modern semi-auto rifle used by one officer to bring down the suspect."

"The Seattle Times simply reported that the officer shot the gun-waving man with a rifle, while KOMO, quoting officer Jeff Kappel, identifies the gun as a 'patrol rifle.' As one Seattle Times reader noted with no small amount of sarcasm, 'If this was a non-cop doing the shooting, the reporter would have made reference to the evil AR15 'assault rifle'; but since it is a cop…'" ...

"A popular National Rifle Association commentator examined the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and came to one conclusion — King supported the Second Amendment. Sorry, liberals."

"Colion Noir based his conclusion on the fact that King and his family were the subject of repeated acts of violence and he tried — unsuccessfully — to obtain a concealed handgun license."

"'Dr. King was a non-violent man, but even he understood the realities of self-defense,' he observed, before making his conclusion." ...

"The viral content blog Gawker published an article Friday headlined: 'The NRA Literally Wrote Florida’s New Bill to Legalize Warning Shots.' However, a brief investigation by the Free Beacon revealed that the NRA literally did not write Florida’s new bill to legalize warning shots."

"The Florida legislature is considering expanding the state's 'stand your ground' law to encompass 'threatened use of force.' Specifically, the bill is intended to shield those who brandish a gun or fire a warning shot in self-defense from the state’s 10-20-Life law, which imposes mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines for felony crimes involving a firearm." ...

"Over the past year, I have heard many interviews, discussions and recommendations about gun control. Typically, they begin with shock over the mass killings, especially the murder of schoolchildren in Connecticut. Then the speakers immediately say that, to prevent these, we must keep guns out of the hands of criminals."

"Wrong target. Make a list — it will be very short — of these slaughters by any person with a criminal record. Except for the know-it-alls who get radio or TV time, one will discover that these killings were all or mostly committed by individuals with no criminal record."

"Criminals will find ways to get guns, but those criminals are not the people who ... kill groups of innocents in schools, churches or colleges." ...

"California state senator Kevin de León evidently plans to don a new hat. In addition to being the most anti-gun member of the California legislature (and that's no small 'accomplishment'), he now evidently intends to become a Ghostbuster. No--he's not teaming up with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. His target is 'ghost guns.'"

"New York’s SAFE Act has generated passionate opposition from gun owners, local legislatures, law enforcement and gun rights groups. But the NRA has been the prime mover behind this opposition."

"Virginia lawmakers chose to reform the state’s gun laws in spite of pressure by police agencies to keep restrictive measures in place. HB878 reforms an antique law that gives local police a veto over obtaining federal permits for suppressors, short barrelled rifles and shotguns, full-auto firearms and 'destructive devices.' Because of a controversial vote in 1986, the existing privately owned stock of automatic firearms was frozen, creating an artificial shortage that resulted in sky-rocketing prices for legal automatic firearms. The cheapest automatic firearms available to collectors are now over $5,000 each . . ." ...

"So, is state Sen. Lee Bright simply trolling for conservative voters who think U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham sold out and is just too left of center? Or does he really and truly think it is a good idea to put machine guns in the hands of public school teachers?"

"Bright, who announced as a challenger to Graham's re-election bid, made it no secret he thinks armed teachers could prevent another Newtown, Conn. And while the argument certainly can be made if someone were armed on a school campus, deaths at the hands of a shooter could be avoided or, at least, significantly reduced the debate rages on regarding whether the armed 'good guys' ought to be the teachers." ...

Submitter's Note: So the Journal editorial board prefers to think of teachers as, what, self-directed bullet sponges?

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
