We break complex tasks into simpler subjects. We teach safety, marksmanship and concealed carry. Later, you might learn self-defense. We talk about education, instruction, practice, training and testing as if everyone used these terms correctly.

Where will we go as we become competent defenders?

Gun rights advocates clashed Monday with supporters of four bills in the Washington state legislature that ban “high-capacity” magazines and firearms made with three-dimensional printers, require law enforcement to seize guns and ammunition in domestic violence cases, and require training for those applying for concealed pistol permits. In a packed hearing room in Olympia, residents pushing for more gun regulation told the Senate Law and Justice Committee that the measures would make the public safer. Opponents countered that the proposals would have no effect on criminals with guns and would infringe solely on the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

A recent series of AmmoLand articles reveals deep divisions between Second Amendment advocates and their perceptions of the National Rifle Association. Comments under the articles show emotional divisions among readers, with the vitriol on display one would generally expect to be reserved for gun-grabbers. I’ve seen some readers complain, they’re tired of reading about this. Fine by me – there’s a whole Internet out there to occupy yourself with if you’d care to leave. If not, be advised – these are my opinions and if I wanted to be popular, I'd be writing about the Kardashians.

It used to be that January and February were my least favorite months of the year. The Christmas holidays are behind us, the icy grip of winter has us in its grasp and it gets dark before it’s even time for dinner. But then a few years ago, I made a discovery that has me looking forward to February every year—the Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pa.

Love the triggers on the SIG P-320 Series of pistols? If so, you can thank Bruce Gray of Gray Guns, a gunsmith of 40 years who also was once a shooter for SIG. Gray found he had trouble running the long, heavy double-action trigger’s on SIG P-Series pistols, so he sought out lighter pull weights and length for competition shooting.

Virginia lawmakers appear unlikely to pass any notable new gun laws this legislative session, but are almost certain to campaign heavily on failed gun legislation later this year. Republicans who control the General Assembly have dispatched gun-control bills backed by Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, who is all but certain to veto any gun-rights bills that pass out of the legislature.

Pointy ears bobbed above the sagebrush, and they were closing fast. My rifle was on the shooting sticks, but I instead reached for the shotgun across my lap. I leveled it on an opening less than 30 yards away, and when the coyote bounded into it, I centered a load of nickel-plated BBs on his head. He dropped in his tracks—and I was able to catch my breath.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Foolish liberals who are trying to read the Second Amendment out of the Constitution by claiming it's not an individual right or that it's too much of a public safety hazard don't see the danger in the big picture. They're courting disaster by encouraging others to use the same means to eliminate portions of the constitution they don't like. — Alan Dershowitz
