Arizona's state legislature will open its own investigation into the Obama administration's disgraced gun-running program, known as "Fast and Furious," the speaker of the state House said Friday.
Speaker Andy Tobin created the committee, and charged it with looking at whether the program broke any state laws — raising the possibility of state penalties against those responsible for the operation.
It's a turnaround from the rest of the immigration issue, where the federal government has sued to block the state's own set of laws. |

When Patty Tegeler looks out the window of her home overlooking the Appalachian Mountains in southwestern Virginia, she sees trouble on the horizon. "In an instant, anything can happen," she told Reuters. "And I firmly believe that you have to be prepared." Tegeler is among a growing subculture of Americans who refer to themselves informally as "preppers." Some are driven by a fear of imminent societal collapse, others are worried about terrorism, and many have a vague concern that an escalating series of natural disasters is leading to some type of environmental cataclysm. ... A wide range of vendors market products to preppers, mainly online. They sell everything from water tanks to guns to survival skills. |

Brady Campaign Acting President Dennis Henigan today issued the following statement in response to U. S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ announcement that she would resign her seat in Congress this week. "We understand but are deeply saddened by the news that Rep. Giffords has decided to resign her seat in Congress because of the demands of her continued rehabilitation from the gunshot wound she suffered a year ago in Tucson. Congress and the American people now have lost the service of another devoted public servant because of gun violence. It is sadly reminiscent of the nation's loss of Jim Brady as Presidential press secretary due to a similar gunshot injury 30 years ago. |

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has announced that she is stepping down from Congress this week. In a video she released on Sunday, Giffords said she is leaving office to focus on her recovery from the gunshot wound she suffered during last January's Tucson shooting that left six people dead and 13 others injured. "I have my work to do on my recovery so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week," she said. "I'm getting better. Everyday my spirit is high." Giffords spoke clearly during the two-minute video, but at times she did appear to struggle with some words. But she did not struggle when she vowed, "I will return." |

U.S. District Court Judge Sam Cummings in Lubbock, Texas last week dismissed the National Rifle Association’s challenge to a Texas law prohibiting teens and young adults 18-20 years old from carrying concealed weapons in public, in the case Jennings v. McCraw. The Brady Center filed an amicus brief defending the Texas law. The Student Government and Graduate Student Assembly of the University of Texas at Austin joined the Brady Center on the brief on behalf of the campus’ 62,000 students, along with the Texas organizations Mothers Against Teen Violence, the Texas Chapters of the Brady Campaign, and Students for Gun-Free Schools in Texas. |

Gun sales among women are on the rise.
The number of criminal background checks for gun purchases hit an all-time high in December according to the FBI.
Experts said there are many reasons why Americans, especially women, are choosing to arm themselves.
For some it's a new hobby; others are concerned about gun rights this election year; and some just no longer feel safe in their neighborhoods. |

They're already allowed to carry guns in the cockpit, but many pilots say that's not enough to keep aviation as safe as it should be.
They want police-like authority to holster a weapon all day long, whether they're at the controls, riding in back of a plane or eating lunch in a terminal.
"That would put us in line with standard law enforcement," said Marcus Flagg, president of the Federal Flight Deck Officer Association, which represents thousands of armed pilots.
He declined to say exactly how many pilots now carry guns, but he said the number is just behind the FBI, which has about 13,800 armed agents. Since being given permission to pack heat 10 years ago, no U.S. pilot has ever had to draw a weapon against a passenger. |

Forsyth County commissioners remain sharply divided over whether to allow people with concealed-weapon permits to take their guns into county parks, but they decided last week to postpone action for at least a couple of weeks.
Board members learned on Thursday that even if they allow people to carry concealed weapons in parks, guns would not be allowed in Tanglewood Park because of the permit the county has there for alcoholic beverages. |

Personal bias is something journalists are trained avoid when they cover the news.
When I started working on a story about the controversial issue of concealed carry of weapons in Illinois, I was forced to face my own bias. I have never lived in a home with guns and considered myself the quintessential anti-gun nut.
...
To help me better understand gun ownership and the reasons people support the idea of carrying a concealed gun outside of their homes, I signed up for a two-day class at Darnall’s Gun Works and Range west of Bloomington. Driving to the class early one Saturday, my innate opposition to all things that fire bullets spoke to me: “Have you lost your mind? You hate guns! You’ll shoot your eye out.” |

Whitfield's case is just one example of homeowners taking action against intruders — and burglars dying at the hands of those homeowners. Supporters say the law is working, but not all cases are clear-cut, and authorities have struggled with the evolving law and increasing numbers of shootings that seem to fall under it. |

Crime has decreased in our great state everywhere that concealed carry was made legal 18 years ago. Unfortunately, that predictable improvement did not extend to areas like parks that remained off-limits to lawful self-defense.
Former Greenville Mayor Pat Dunn was an active member of NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s anti-gun organization, MAIG. One of her final acts was implementation of an over-reaching, anti-HB 650 gun ban in parks. |

But now, the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns is calling for the federal government to mandate background checks in all gun sales. It’s sparked an emotional debate that even divides gun-rights advocates. Opponents decry the idea as an affront to individual freedoms and say citizens should be able to sell private property without government interference. |

The Second Amendment does not specify "guns." It simply states the right "to keep and bear Arms." Guns are one type of "arms," but not the only one. Guns can decommission a lot of bad guys quickly, but there are other self-defense weapons that work well on a 1-on-1 threat.
Therefore the proposed Arizona law is discriminatory. It should not give preference to the gun industry alone. Revising the Firearms Omnibus bill to Arms of Choice Omnibus and including the following items, would open up opportunities to the entire arms industry. |

In Illinois, the Family and Personal Protection Act that would allow gun owners to carry loaded firearms — either openly or concealed — in a vehicle and into certain public places came up six votes shy in the Illinois House last year. Anti-gun lawmakers from the Chicago area provided most of the opposition. But the debate is not over: State Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, expects to bring the bill back for another vote this year. |

The Tea Party, for example, is put off by Romney's support for the Wall Street bailouts, the stimulus package, and, of course, his infamous signature venture into state-run healthcare in Massachusetts called 'RomneyCare.' Gun rights activists point to his weak record on the Second Amendment and declare adamantly that Romney would be disastrous for firearms rights. And right-to-life Republicans are still not convinced the candidate has had a genuine conversion from being a rabid supporter of unrestricted access to abortion, even for teenagers. |

Nationally, Fast and Furious has entered the vernacular. As a result, Americans of all walks of life now know that the ATF and DOJ oversaw the sale of approximately 2,500 guns to straw purchasers who, in turn, passed them to criminals in Mexico and elsewhere. Moreover, Americans know that the plan from the get-go was to have these guns carried across an international border and passed to criminals whom the ATF then planned to arrest (but they never got around to arresting them because they hadn’t bothered tracing the guns from the point of sale). |

The Waterloo mother hopes another tribute to the fallen high school student will prevent future youth violence.
Schilling wants to get firearms out of the hands of teens, and she's willing to put some money behind her cause. Schilling said she will put up part of her tax refund to launch a gun buyback program in Black Hawk County.
She is also seeking donations to fund her project, which she call Moms Against Guns. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. — Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942.
