The Delta County Board of Commissioners is preparing to vote next month on a proposed resolution that would make the county a “sanctuary county” for the Second Amendment. Local residents had another opportunity to express their opinions Tuesday.
Commissioner David Moyle shared an early draft of the proposal during the board’s Nov. 25, 2019, meeting. If approved, the resolution would declare Delta County a Second Amendment sanctuary county. The board would also support the county’s sheriff and prosecuting attorney in the exercise of their discretion to not enforce unconstitutional firearms laws under the proposal.

Michigan deer hunters donated a record amount of venison to feed hungry families.
Hunters donated 58,355 pounds of venison last year to Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger. It was enough meat to provide 233,420 meals.
“Michigan hunters who have donated deer to feed the hungry of our state continue a practice going back to settlement days when hunters provided for those who could not provide for themselves,” said Dean Hall, MSAH executive director, in a press release. “We are so grateful to all hunters who stepped up and shared their harvest.”
Since MSAH’s creation in 1991, hunters have donated over 746,005 pounds of ground venison.

MI: Police: Homeowner shoots armed robber in Warren

Warren police say a homeowner turned the tables on an alleged robber and shot the intruder.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. in the area of Studebaker and Lorraine, not far from 9 Mile and Hoover.
A 22-year-old resident was returning home from a concert when he was approached by another man armed with a handgun. Police say the suspect announced a holdup.
The resident, a CPL holder, pulled out his own pistol and shot the would-be bandit twice, according to Warren police.
The suspect was then taken to St. John Hospital and listed in temp serious condition.
Police confiscated both firearms as their investigation continues.

Senate Bill 6077 would ban the manufacture, possession, sale, transfer, etc. of standard capacity magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. This measure is strongly supported by the Governor and the Attorney General.

Self-defense is especially important for the less physically able, but what use is the great equalizer of a gun if you have to already be big and strong to use one? While proper technique can help, it’s also easy to forget how to operate a gun properly while under life-threatening stress. Plus practicing at the range is much more enjoyable without having to struggle with running slides or hanging on to heavily recoiling guns. Fortunately, manufacturers have shown increasing interest in designing pistols that are easier to use. |

With the gun rights issue again capturing the nation by storm, the Bay County Commission has expressed its strong support of the Second Amendment by letting county employees carry concealed weapons on most county properties.
On Wednesday morning, the commissioners approved of a revision to Bay County’s Workplace Violence Policy — allowing county employees to carry a concealed weapon on all county properties except in the county chamber where commission meetings are held. The policy previously prohibited employees from carrying concealed weapons on county properties. |

The rally, organized by the gun rights group Virginia Citizens Defense League, raised security concerns in the days leading up to it. Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency and banned firearms from the Capitol grounds from Jan. 17 to Jan. 21.
Over the weekend, Capitol Police erected a fence around the grounds and created one main security checkpoint into the area where speakers would be located. Capitol Police estimated around 22,000 people attended, with 6,000 entering the secured area where weapons were not allowed. |

Had 22,000 people showed up in Richmond, Virginia, to demand stronger gun control laws, it is a safe bet that proponents of them would pronounced the crowd to be conclusive proof most Americans want such restrictions.
But when a group estimated at that size demonstrated on Monday against new firearms ownership limits, some gun control advocates insisted the crowd was small — and evidence not many people worry about Second Amendment rights. |

A resolution to make Ionia County a “Second Amendment sanctuary” was tabled Tuesday after discussion with the county prosecutor and sheriff.
The Ionia County Board of Commissioners at its Jan. 21 meeting had an agenda item for a resolution making the county a “Second Amendment sanctuary.” Last week, resident Randy Schmid approached the board last week proposing the resolution after bills regulating gun control were introduced by the Democratic majority in the Virginia legislature — leading to counties declaring themselves as “sanctuaries” that support the right to bear arms. |

A shooting that left a man dead earlier in January has been ruled an act of self-defense.
Leonard Evan Loehr, 42, was found dead at 1855 Skyland Drive, Lot 3, after deputies were dispatched to the address at 2:51 a.m. for a reported self-defense shooting, according to information previously published in The News Herald.
District Attorney Scott Reilly’s office issued a statement ruling the shooting an act of self-defense on Wednesday. |

Today, January 22nd, legislation was introduced in the Alabama Legislature to create a new lifetime carry permit for state residents. Please contact your lawmakers and urge them to SUPPORT House Bill 39 and Senate Bill 47.
House Bill 39, sponsored by Representative Proncey Robertson, and Senate Bill 47, sponsored by Senator Randy Price, will create a new statewide, uniform system to provide lifetime permits for qualified applicants at the cost of $200. For state residents over 65, the fee will drop to $150. HB 39 and SB 47 are companion bills and we need both measures passed to secure passage of this critical legislation. |

The House of Representatives passed legislation ( HR-8 ) The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. This legislation, co-sponsored by 14th District Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Naperville) requires background checks on every gun sale including unlicensed gun dealers. Also included was a carve-out for guns given as gifts, or used as hunting, target shooting or self defense. This legislation is a common sense approach to make us all safer from gun violence. It also closes a loop hole that has allowed criminals to purchase guns. |

A proposal by Senate Democrats would require concealed pistol license applicants to complete a safety course.
Senate Bill 6294 would require conceal-carry permit holders to complete a eight hours of training that would include safe handling and storage of firearms, state laws regarding the use of deadly force, conflict resolution, suicide prevention and live-fire shooting exercises.
Presently, conceal-carry permits are valid for five years and require only a criminal background check by local law enforcement and for the applicant to be over the age of 21. |

A drunken driving conviction could mean losing the right to buy and own firearms in Pennsylvania, the U.S. Court of Appeals has decided.
The precedent-setting opinion handed down Friday hinges on the federal government’s definition of a “serious crime” — the level a crime must reach to trigger an individual being barred from buying firearms.
Under federal law, a serious crime is one that can carry a state-prison sentence of two or more years. |
