Myth No. 3 — Guns are Bad

"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, fewer than 100 kids 15 and under are killed in gun accidents every year. Of course that's horrible, and I understand why demonstrators say we need more gun control."

"But guess what? The Centers for Disease Control recently completed a review of studies of various types of gun control: background checks, waiting periods, bans on certain guns and ammunition. It could not document that these rules have reduced violent crime."

States' Database a Trove of Personal Info

"A federally funded crime database run by seven states is looking increasingly to privacy advocates like a potent substitute for the data-mining program the Pentagon scrapped after public rebuke."

"Law enforcement officials and the private company that manages the database, known as Matrix, say it merely streamlines police access to information about suspects that authorities have long been able to get from disparate sources."

"But newly emerging facts about the program, including documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union, indicate it could also be made to sift through vast stores of Americans' personal data - some 20 billion records - and proactively finger crime and terrorism suspects."

"Major U.S. carriers are scrambling to create disclosure policies that inform customers they might share personal data with the federal government, in response to two highly publicized cases in which airlines secretly handed over private passenger information."

"The airlines are working swiftly to alert passengers and protect themselves from liability as the U.S. government is poised to force the carriers as early as next month to turn over data as part of a computerized passenger screening program called CAPPS II."

"The airlines are under pressure because of the disclosure last week that Northwest Airlines failed to inform customers that it gave the government records on millions of passengers for a secret security project. ..."

AL: NRA may be mute on proposed Alabama gun law

"The National Rifle Association historically opposes almost all gun-control measures, but recent activity suggests it might remain silent if the Alabama Legislature enacts a law requiring the state to share mental commitment records with the federal database used for gun checks."

"Sen. Tom Butler, D-Madison, and Rep. Tommy Carter, D-Elkmont, said in the aftermath of the recent shooting deaths of two Athens policemen that they support the concept of adding state mental commitment records to a federal database used for pre-sale gun checks."

-------
It is instructive that the NRA is not only silent, but even supportive of legislation that could prevent a completely new class of citizens from defending themselves with firearms, as well as has the potential to violate private medical information and allow the feds to use it to deprive people of their Constitutional rights.

"Attorney Stephanie E. Trudeau, a Cleveland employment and labor lawyer who can be reached at strudeau@ulmer.com or (216) 621-8400, has issued an anti-self-defense press release instructing businesses on the merits of banning licensees from carrying their firearms while at work, while shopping, or simply while visiting on business."

"World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings has it out, not only for the current president, but also for all Republicans. On a segment about gun control, he stated, 'Republicans in Congress try to stop gun control lobbyists from passing a bill on basic gun safety.' Well, first off, who cares if they are Republicans? What does that have to do with the bill? There are some Republicans for gun control, some against, and the same goes for Democrats. Jennings makes these gross generalizations about a particular group, and he likes to make them look like rednecks fighting for their gun racks on their Ford F-150’s." ...

Does the Second Amendment still make sense in the U.S.?

The lies begin at the very top of this inane editorial.

-------
"In a time when violent crimes dominate the headlines, and when the incidence of violent crime in the U.S. greatly outpaces violence in other industrial countries, the issue of gun ownership has been one of the most hotly contested topics for decades. As with any intense, long-running debate, the truth may be hard to get at, now that it's been clouded by years of well-rehearsed rhetoric and over-interpreted data."

-------
The incidence of violent crime in the U.S. is much lower than in countries with strict gun control and others that have banned gun ownership outright. This 2001 report shows that Australia and England lead the world in violent victimizations, followed by Canada, Scotland, Finland and Poland. The United States doesn't even appear on this list.

Yes, it's very difficult to have a coherent "debate" on the Second Amendment when editorial boards such as this one distort the truth, isn't it?

And given the increase in government tyranny via such legislation as the "Patriot" Act, Victory Act and Patriot II, the Second Amendment, which protects the citizens' ability to defend themselves from government tyranny is not only appropriate but makes more sense now than ever before in our nation's history.

"In an effort to trim its high murder rate, Brazil's government has virtually outlawed possession of handguns in public by almost everyone, with the exception of police, soldiers, prison guards and security officers."

"However, other countries that have tried this not-so-new type of 'bold social experiment' have had unhappy results."

"Illinois residents overwhelmingly support banning assault weapons for use by the public, a gun control group said in a survey released Wednesday."

"Congress passed a federal 10-year ban on 19 assault weapons in 1994. Whether to make the ban permanent, let it expire or strengthen it is an issue before Congress this year. Both gun control advocates and gun rights advocates agree the current ban is ineffective. But they are deeply divided on how to proceed."

"A survey the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence released Wednesday showed 69 percent of Illinois residents supported renewing the ban."

-------
A poll by an organization obviously biased against firearms finds that supposedly most citizens support their fascist policies? What a shocker!

Maybe this uninformed lot hasn't heard that the "assault" weapons ban has been completely worthless when it comes to reducing crimes committed with said weapons?

"With the federal assault weapons ban set to expire in September, gun-control advocates are pushing for legislation that will not only renew the ban, but also strengthen it."

" 'The current ban has failed in its mission to keep assault weapons from being the weapon of choice for criminals,' said Chris Boyster, regional coordinator for the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, at a press conference sponsored Wednesday by the Champaign County Healthcare Consumers."

-------
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, these weapons are hardly the "weapon of choice" for criminals, as the gun whiners claim. Less than 2 percent of criminals use them to commit crimes. But facts never stop the gun banners from pushing their foul propaganda, do they?

"There was President Bush, full of vigor in a State of the Union address that was as much about answering his Democratic rivals' criticisms as anything else, addressing the Patriot Act. 'Key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year,' he said to unanticipated applause."

"Deft a politician as he is, Mr. Bush might give that welcome scenario some thought. His immediate vow, though, straight from the script from which he was momentarily distracted, was, 'The terrorist threat will not expire on that schedule. Our law enforcement needs this vital legislation to protect our citizens. You need to renew the Patriot Act.' That showed the President in command but not in the right."

"Let me be the first one to say it: President Bush is on track to lose in November, and it won't matter who his Democratic opponent is. His fabrications, deceptions, and prevarications are just too much to stomach. His duplicity rivals anything in the previous administration, a Republican name plate notwithstanding."

"It's hard to think of anything this president has done right. His policies are every bit as socialist (or fascist) as the most liberal Democrat. We have lost more freedoms during the last three years than we had lost during the previous thirty! Even though Bush has enjoyed Republican majorities in both houses of Congress, neither conservatives nor constitutionalists can point to a single victory Bush has given them. ..."

"But the reality is that many of the crimes recorded in last week's data - designed by the Government to be used by newspaper editors nation-wide as contemporary - were actually committed almost two years ago."

"Indeed, the very last of those crimes recorded in the figures happened nine months ago. None were more recent than that."

"No indication was made, therefore, about the progress Staffordshire Constabulary might have made in the last year to counter their problems."

"The same can be said of fake firearms statistics, released at the same time, which show a 46 per cent year-on-year national rise. Of course, this is extremely disturbing and backs strong campaigns by a number of Midlands MPs to have imitation weapons banned."

Police and Secret Service agents have been restricting protesters across the country to zones variously called 'protest zones' or 'free-speech zones' or, as in Knoxville, 'First Amendment zones' for the president's appearances."

"The fact that they're not new, however, doesn't make them any more palatable. In a country that reveres free speech as a basic tenet, it is an insult to limit that right to particular areas or zones. To paraphrase a comment made by a protester in Pennsylvania, we thought all of America was a First Amendment zone."

The employee, who was not identified, was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with a hip wound. The suspect was pronounced dead on arrival at the same facility.

No charges are expected to be filed against the store owner.

Government thugs destroy a family's life and property over a suspicion-- and then when it turns out they were wrong, they continue trying to destroy them.

They apparently don't have real threats to fight, so pick on this poor couple. It does explain why they don't want the people to keep and bear arms though-- someone might take exception and do something about it.

Remember this the next time they say they need to raise taxes or they won't be able to provide "law enforcement." They sure have the resources to spend on harassing people who just want to live free. Maybe it's easier than going after gangbangers, who might shoot back.

"ARMED robbers tied up a grandmother and locked her five-year-old grandson in a bedroom before making off with thousands of pounds in cash, police said last night."

"The three men, who were wearing balaclavas and armed with knives and other weapons, walked into a farmhouse near Hamilton while 52-year-old Margaret Baird was babysitting her grandson, Andrew."

"Baird was thrown to the floor, injuring her shoulders, and tied up during the incident at about 7.30pm on Friday. The gang stole a four-figure sum of cash from a safe and threatened to murder the former teacher if she called the police."

-------
And yet, the UK insists on tightening the noose around the populace by disarming them, forcing reliance upon their bungling, mostly disarmed law enforcement and prosecuting anyone who dares to defend life or property with the most effective self-defense tools on the market.

"I know what you’re thinking. According to the Illinois Constitution, 'Subject only to the police power, the right of the individual citizen to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed' (Section 22, Article I of the Illinois Bill of Rights)."

"Such pedestrian arguments about Constitutional rights don’t hold much water to the illuminati who sit on the Wilmette Village Board or serve as their public safety personnel."

"All four firearms used in the Columbine High School massacre came from gun shows. Three of the weapons were purchased specifically for the killers at shows where background checks weren't required. The fourth had been legally bought at a previous gun show and wound up illegally in the murderers' hands." ...

"Even thoughtful gun-rights advocates acknowledge that some people should never possess firearms. Instant background checks are designed to prevent crooks from getting guns without seriously inconveniencing law-abiding gun buyers. Amendment 22 is an excellent tool in making background checks more effective, and thus at stopping the wrong people from getting hold of such weapons."

-------
Now, would these hoplophobic statists care to inform us WHO bought the rifles used in the Columbine shooting? Would they tell the truth and confirm that the guns were purchased legally by others and handed to Klebold and Harris?

Would they report that 22 year old Mark Manes (the son of a long-time anti-gun activist) bought a pistol at a gun show legally and Robyn Anderson both bought the three long guns at a Denver area gun show legally as well?

As both would have passed background checks, had clean records and could have bought the guns at any gun store or show without a problem, would these liars at the Denver Post explain to us please how background checks would have prevented this massacre?

"What is one to do when a criminal proceeds, undeterred by a 90-pound German shepherd, a security alarm system and a property lit up like an outdoor stadium? And now he has our house keys and an inventory of the things he'd like to call his own. Would the police patrol my dead-end street as effectively the second time as they had the first? Would my small children be unharmed the next time? Would the criminal be satisfied with another automobile, another television, or would he feel the need to climb the staircase to the bedrooms, perhaps for a watch or a ring or a wallet, again risking little?"

"Would my children wake to find a masked figure, clad in total black, in their bedroom doorway, a vision that might haunt them for years? Would the police come again and fill out yet another report and at what point should I feel comfortable that the 'bad guy' got everything he wanted and wouldn't return a third time?"

"I went to the safe where my licensed and registered gun was kept, loaded it for the very first time and tucked it under the mattress of my bed. I assured my frightened children 'that Daddy would deal with the bad guy ... if he ever returned.' "

A 14-year-old Mount Greenwood boy faces at least five years in prison after pleading guilty in the murder of his father, a Chicago police sergeant.

Francis Skroch IV, a 41-year-old sergeant in the Grand Crossing District, was shot to death Aug. 5 at the family's home near 111th and Kedzie.

Prosecutors said the teen confessed to killing his father because he felt the rules of the house were too strict. He faces a mandatory minimum prison term of five years -- and possible incarceration until his 21st birthday -- when sentenced next month.

In the weeks after the slaying, the boy's family -- including his mother and sister -- tearfully hugged the teen at court appearances. They insisted that Skroch would not have wanted his son prosecuted as an adult.

-------
One would think that a police officer, dedicated to preserving public safety, protecting life and property and defending the Constitution would want the most stringent prosecution for his criminal son.

"Prosecutors allege that Walter Russell, then a 22-year-old prison guard, shot and killed Aletra Slack on July 19, 2000, after a pursuit that ended when the silver sport-utility vehicle in which she was a passenger crashed into a tree in the 12000 block of Wentworth Avenue in Chicago."

-------
But nonetheless Mayor Daley wants only law enforcement "professionals" to be armed - thugs like this prison guard who shot a young woman in cold blood with a weapon he was "special" enough to have, while they were disarmed.

"For a group that holds itself up as champions of Democracy, Britain's chattering classes sure can get their knickers in a knot with the will of the people offends their liberal sensibilities."

"Case in point: a recent stunt by BBC Radio 4's Today program. As an exercise in grass-roots lobbying, Today asked its 6 million weekly listeners to propose a new law for the new year." ...

"Clearly expecting some sensible law mandating fat-free potato chips or renewed efforts to save the ruby-throated thrush of Upper Equatorial Guinea, the organizers were obviously aghast when the winner, with 37 percent of the vote, was a law allowing homeowners to use 'any means' to defend their property from intruders." ...

"As usual, the much-maligned tabloids were more in tune with the frustrations of the common folk than the opinion-mongers of the broadsheets. The Today poll was a clear indication of just how frustrated folks in England are with rising crime and the apparent inability of police to do anything about it, they said."

"A convicted rapist went on a violent 13-hour crime spree across three boroughs, killing a young man in front of a 4-year-old girl in Queens, sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Manhattan and shooting at people in the Bronx before he was arrested by a team of police detectives late Wednesday night, law enforcement officials said yesterday." ...

"The man who was arrested, Andre Shobey, 45, had a knife and a loaded .32-caliber revolver when the police caught him. He has spent most of his adult life in maximum security prisons for accosting people in elevators, and for raping, robbing, beating and humiliating his victims in one-day crime sprees more than 20 years ago, records show."

-------
So while violent criminals are being released into society to victimize yet more innocents, New York is disarming said innocents against these foul thugs, forcing them to face their fate vulnerable, defenseless and completely dependent on the police to protect them - something that the courts have repeatedly claimed the police have no obligation to do.

A second female employee at the maximum-security Graterford Prison in Montgomery County is charged with having sex with an inmate. This time it's a guard.

Last August, a counselor was charged with having sex with inmates at the state prison. Now a guard who has been watching over the all-male inmate population for more than two years has been fired and taken into custody.

Kelly Rozier, 35, came under investigation after a guard official reported seeing her having sex with one of two inmates she was supposed to be escorting on a trash detail.

Court papers indicate that the second inmate may have been acting as a lookout for the alleged sexual encounter -- but apparently unknown to the three of them, a lieutenant was watching through the glass window of a nearby room.

KABA NOTE: Sometimes we will run "Dumb Criminal" stories just for a bit of levity. This one also makes a point. A cowardly, uneducated hoplophobe would never have noticed that the idiot thug was attempting to load the wrong ammunition into his weapon. The typical eunuch our society has been trying to breed would have dropped face first on the floor and wet his pants in fear. This is another reason to ensure that even basic firearms education is introduced into every citizen's life.

-------
"A teen trying to rob a convenience store was thwarted when he tried to load a rifle with the wrong-sized bullets."

"The 16-year-old stormed into a 7-Eleven and pointed his long rifle at the store clerk, Broward County sheriff's spokesman Jim Leljedal said."

"But a customer tackled the teen after seeing him trying to jam .40 caliber bullets into the .22 caliber rifle."

A (Somewhat) Brief Intro to Fallacies

"The next fallacy I'll address is the standard used by government at all levels and in all of its incarnations and forms. It is called the 'False Dilemma.' A dilemma is a situation in which you have two equally favorable or unfavorable choices. A true dilemma is, for example, a situation like 'I have a choice: I can work to support myself, or I can starve.' That one is pretty easy-as much as I don't like working, I much prefer it to dying. A false dilemma, on the other hand, is a situation in which the arguer is attempting to force a decision between two equally bad (or I suppose it's possible, good) choices, when in fact the range of choices is broader than the two being offered. The basic example of this is the choice 'Your money or your life.' The standard false dilemma offered by crooks of every sort-from the common street mugger to the government agent. The opponent is trying to get you to believe that you only have two choices: either you give them your money, or they will take your life. They don't want you to realize you have other choices, for example 1) run and hide, or my favorite 2) remove the ass from the gene pool by the most expedient method available. This is the same fallacy upon which the old 'Left-Right' political spectrum and the two-party political system is based."

"A juvenile court officer in Louisville said he was shot by a black man Wednesday night, but now police say he was lying."

"Police said Thursday that Glenn Satterly, 40, actually shot himself."

"Satterly gave a false report of the shooting incident, which occurred in a church parking lot on Greenwood Road in Pleasure Ridge Park, WLKY NewsChannel 32 reported. His bulletproof vest stopped the bullet."

"A police spokesman said Satterly admitted to investigators that he shot himself. After the shooting he tried to get rid of the bullet lodged in his vest. The bullet was tested at the Kentucky State Police crime lab, where officials said it matched those in Satterly's gun, WLKY reported. When the officer was confronted about the evidence, Satterly reportedly admitted that he shot himself."

Aaron Roth, 19, was charged with second-degree manslaughter.

According to police, Nicholas Holmes, also 19, of House Springs, Mo., died after a man head-butted him early Sunday and knocked him to the sidewalk. The victim's father said the altercation apparently started with a racial slur.

Holmes suffered serious head injuries and died Sunday night at the UK Hospital.

Holmes and another Dayton student, Noah McDaniel, were assaulted by a man they did not know near the Royal Lexington Apartments early Sunday morning. The assailant also punched McDaniel, 21, in the nose.

Sarah Brady, Chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March, issued the following statement:

"The Senate voted today to destroy background check records, to make it easier for dangerous criminals to access guns, and to protect the most reckless gun dealers in the nation. President Bush should veto this bill.

"Congress ignored the counsel of their own independent investigative office and instead listened to the gun lobby. It has made it easier for spousal abusers, stalkers, the mentally ill and even terrorists to get guns and keep them.

"Congress hopes the public will not notice. That's not going to happen. Eventually, we will restore the background check system and strengthen it. Jim and I pray that there aren't too many people who fall victim to criminals before sanity is restored.

"The Brady Background Check has blocked over a million prohibited purchasers since it was enacted. In addition, police have been able to retrieve guns from many criminals who have purchased guns and shouldn't have - because records were retained for a reasonable period of time. Now those guns will stay in those criminals' hands.

"I have never pretended that the fight for sensible gun laws is an easy one. But this is a shameful step backward."

“It costs over $100 now for a person to legally go in and get a pistol permit,” she said. “To raise that to over $200, which is what this proposal could do for someone who wants to legally and totally approved go out and do some target shooting is certainly not the way to go and it singles out one important segment, our sportsmen.”

While the governor said he would not propose raising taxes, fees for some services would be increased.

"A national gun control group is pointing to last week's triple homicide in Armstrong County as 'Exhibit A' on why there should be a background check on antiques and every other firearm."

"Donald R. Barnhart, who police said used an antique replica handgun to kill his girlfriend's sister, the sister's husband and the couple's toddler at their Parks Township residence, apparently took advantage of a gun-law loophole that exempts buyers of antique guns from registration or background checks."

"Barnhart was barred by state and federal law from owning a firearm because he pleaded guilty to felony charges in 1998. But antique guns -- and even newly made replicas of antique guns -- don't require a background check under the law."

When have background checks ever stopped a violent criminal from doing their nefarious work? What is to blame for this tragedy - the freedoms we all cherish or the failure of authorities to keep this violent thug locked up while disarming the rest of us?

Authorities said she appeared to have been shot execution-style by a gunman who burst in and sprayed a room where Princess, as she was known, and at least one other girl were watching television." ...

"Princess's mother, Judyann Hansen, said D.C. police detectives had offered her daughter protection in exchange for information about that killing. Police were clear about the danger witnesses face, Hansen said, with one detective telling her that a gunman will 'come and put you to sleep because he don't want to do 60 years.' "

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004)
