"I believe what is ultimately called for is a truly independent counsel--not one reporting to DOJ, as current law provides, because that can create a fox/henhouse situation, and we've already seen many indications of the current OIG investigation being politically limited and compromised--which means Congress needs to re-up the office that expired in 1999. That will be the test of whether or not they have been effective, in my opinion."

Submitter's Note: Back in the late 70's towns around the Norfolk Navy base were starting to crack down on sailors. Cops were hassling them, businesses were banning uniformed sailors, etc.. So the CO of the base arranged to have the base's entire payroll (which was still in cash in those days) delivered in the recently released $2 bills. Not just sailors, but all of the civilian contractors too. When merchants saw just how much of their business came from the base the signs came down and the cops became a *lot* less confrontational. |

"South Carolina’s new voter ID act has been in the news lately, with various civil rights groups and the Department of Justice damning it as discriminatory and racist.
