Michigan Democrats have introduced two bills in the State House that would ban open and concealed carry of firearms in the Capitol Building, on Capitol grounds, and at the Legislative buildings for the House and Senate in downtown Lansing.

State Rep. Tyrone Carter, D-6th District, one of the bills' Democratic sponsors and a former law enforcement officer, said both he and his wife, retired sergeants, have concealed pistol licenses.

“I’m okay with giving mine up if everyone else gives theirs up,” said Carter. “The thing is, 'Democrats are trying to take our guns away' – nobody’s trying to take your guns away. But there needs to be limits and qualifiers to the responsibility of owning a gun.”

2020 was a record year for many things, including the sale of firearms.

"2020 was a year unlike any other we've seen. We had 21 million background checks for the sale of a firearm and that by far exceeded any previous record we had,” Mark Oliva, director of public affairs for the National Shooting Sports Foundation or NSSF, said.

Oliva said first-time gun buyers accounted for 40% of purchases last year-- about 8.4 million people nationwide.

State Rep. Mike Loychik, R-Bazetta, said he will introduce legislation that would make Ohio a Second Amendment sanctuary state.

Loychik plans to introduce the Second Amendment Sanctuary State Act next week.

“Members of the Ohio General Assembly and U.S. Congress have a duty to uphold the rights of citizens across this country. This includes the freedoms granted to us under the Second Amendment of our Constitution,” Loychik said in a news release. “This bill ensures prioritizing the protection of law-abiding Ohioans’ right to keep and bear arms.”

“I grew up at a time when people were not afraid of people with firearms. I used to travel on the subway from Queens to Manhattan with a rifle. Could you imagine doing that today in New York City?” So recalled U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia about his days as a schoolboy on a rifle team.

Scalia’s experience reflected a long tradition. For example, Gen. George W. Wingate, president of the N.Y. Public Schools Athletic League, wrote an essay titled Why School Boys Should Be Taught to Shoot? (1907). President Teddy Roosevelt wrote an afterword for it congratulating the New York pupil who was the best shot of the year.

Republican lawmakers in several more states want to loosen gun restrictions by allowing people to carry concealed firearms without having to get a permit, continuing a trend that gun control advocates call dangerous.

Fifteen states already allow concealed carry without a permit, and lawmakers in nine others have proposed allowing or expanding the practice. GOP governors are backing the changes in Utah and Tennessee. Another bill expanding permitless carry in Montana has passed the state House.

Most states require people to do things like get weapons training and undergo a background check to get a permit to carry a gun hidden by a jacket or inside a purse.

Savannah City Council to introduce a new resolution to repeal what they describe as a dangerous law.

The resolution is in support of repealing Georgia’s "stand your ground" law. The law was made to give residents the ability to protect themselves and property through self-defense. But local officials say it encourages vigilantism and prevents just from being served justice.

“It’s a dangerous law because right now it allows somebody to shoot and kill somebody even though they can safely get away,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson.

With Republicans comfortably in the driver's seat and Gov. Spencer Cox in support, the Utah state House on Tuesday gave a big thumbs up to a permitless carry bill.

The measure, HB60, found an easy 54-19 approval largely along party lines in a move that sends it to the Utah Senate for further consideration. The proposal, sponsored by Rep. Walt Brooks (R), is expected to receive similar treatment in that chamber.

"This bill helps protect the rights of self-defense for every Utahan,” said Brooks.

Is the .357 Magnum the Most Versatile Revolver Caliber of All Time?

When it comes to selecting a centerfire revolver for general-purpose use, there are not a lot of options, and all the best options are magnums. You have the .327 Federal Magnum, the .357 Magnum, the .41 Magnum, and the .44 Magnum. Yeah, there are some larger caliber cartridges but they’re generally best for hunting only. There are also some auto-pistol cartridges like the 9 mm and 10 mm, and there’s the age old .45 Colt. However, when it comes right down to it, if you’re going to have only one revolver, the .357 Magnum is probably the best of the bunch.

It’s a grim way to start the new year. More than 3,012 people have died from guns in the first few weeks of January. Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks gun violence in the United States, estimates that 1,716 of the deaths resulted from gun-inflicted suicide. At least 134 of the shootings were accidental. Seventeen children and 79 teenagers are among the victims.

In recent times, gun regulations have been spoken of quite frequently.

I see the point of gun regulation proponents quite frequently, and I empathize with their stories. However much I understand, I disagree with their idea. In my opinion, the most important thing in America is our right to bear arms.

Some people say that the Second Amendment was created exclusively to uphold militias. They argue that the police force is this militia. When you break it down, that is a foolish understanding of the amendment.

“She has finality, and she can get on with her life and not have to deal with the stress of a pending felony trial,” Mr. Williams said. “She just wants to put this behind her, and I can’t blame her.”

Mr. Hook would like to think that the sentence sends a strong message to the community.

“I hope this makes it clear that deadly force is never acceptable to protect your personal property,” Mr. Hook said in an interview.

Ed.: Deadly force is always acceptable to protect your property, and with any luck, we can get the law to recognize that fact again.

The National Rifle Association said Wednesday it is backing a legal challenge of a Maryland law that requires handgun buyers to undergo training and to apply for a state license, saying it creates unnecessary barriers for average citizens to exercise their rights.

The influential gun-rights group is supporting a lawsuit in which Maryland Shall Issue, another Second Amendment protection group, and individual gun owners are suing Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and William Pallozzi, the state police superintendent, in federal court to overturn the law.

Law enforcement officials say gun safety should be taught at a young age – and that's true not only for professional use, but for recreational or home protection use as well.

Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King said people need to be proficient physically and mentally when handling firearms.

“I think one of the things that is overlooked when determining whether to own a gun — to keep in your home for self-defense or to carry on your person or in your car — is the mental aspect of it,” said King. “Being mentally prepared to use that gun in the right situation."

The plaintiffs in an NRA-backed lawsuit today asked a federal court to declare Maryland’s handgun qualification license law unconstitutional.

The current handgun qualification law requires residents in Maryland who wish to legally purchase a handgun to first fill out an application, obtain a copy of their fingerprints from a third-party, attend a lengthy classroom instruction, pass a live-fire exercise, pay a $50 application fee, then wait up to 30 days for the state to process the information.

The year 2020 was big in terms of gun sales in the US even as the country continues to debate the control of weapons that take several thousands of lives in the country every year. Extraordinary circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and anti-racism protests against the law-keepers saw this surge and according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), nearly five million Americans ended up buying their first weapons in the year that just went by.

As guns fly off store shelves around the U.S., Washington state lawmakers are setting their sights on banning high-capacity magazines.

The Brookings Institution estimates some three million more guns were sold than normal between March and June, bringing national gun sales to an all-time high as mass protests against police brutality began around the country.

KUOW reports that in Seattle alone, some 9,426 background checks for gun purchases were processed or 55% over the city's annual average.

Sponsored by Washington Sen. Marko Liias, D-Lynnwood, Senate Bill 5078 builds on efforts in the state legislature to slap stricter limits on ammunition sales. Gun control advocates say they could save lives in a mass shooting.

If you’d happened to visit Recoil Firearms in Detroit on a particular Saturday in August, you would have been treated to the sight of a crowd hundreds-deep waiting to go inside.

It was no ordinary day for the shooting range; in fact, it was shut down to outside patrons entirely. This was a private affair, exclusively for women who want to learn how to shoot.

“This is an issue that all Democrats, Republicans, independents, Libertarians should be extremely concerned about, especially because we don’t have to guess about where this goes or how this ends. What characteristics are we looking for as we are building this profile of a potential extremist, what are we talking about? Religious extremists, are we talking about Christians, evangelical Christians, what is a religious extremist? Is it somebody who is pro-life? [The proposed legislation could create] a very dangerous undermining of our civil liberties, our freedoms in our Constitution, and a targeting of almost half of the country.”

Gun control advocates are once again pushing the entertainment industry to produce anti-gun propaganda with the explicit goal of advancing failed firearm legislation. The renewed overt effort will strike some as superfluous, given Hollywood’s lengthy track record of anti-gun agitprop and left-wing political monoculture.

In early January, entertainment industry magazine Variety published a lengthy interview with former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of the eponymous gun control organization Giffords. The piece outlined the group’s plans to influence Hollywood, noting,

Witnesses are describing a deadly shooting in southwest Missouri as self-defense, authorities say.

Phelps County deputies talked to six eyewitnesses to the Jan. 16 shooting in Dolittle in which Donny Mason was killed and another man suffered a leg wound, Sheriff Sheriff Michael Kirn said in a news release that was posted Monday on Facebook.

The release said the witnesses reported that Mason drew a pistol first and approached the other man with his gun pointed at him. That's when the other man drawn his pistol and the two began shooting at one another, the witnesses said.
