The anti-gun lobbying group called "Americans for Gun Safety" (AGS) unveiled its latest attack on gun shows and the truth this week in an ad it ran in Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper. The ad claimed "As Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge signed legislation requiring background checks for handgun and assault weapons sales at gun shows." In fact, no part of this claim is even remotely true. |

Before Minnesota lawmakers can finish saying "Welcome back" on Tuesday, they may find themselves in the throes of debate over the bitter and divisive issue of carrying concealed firearms in public.
In the opening days of the session, legislators are expected to pick up where they left off last year, resurrecting a proposal to guarantee concealed-carry permits to everyone who passes criminal background checks, has no severe mental problems and is properly trained in the use of the weapon. |

"I note there is a bill awaiting the governor's signature that will mandate FOID holders be background checked every six months. Think on that. What could be the purpose of such a thing except to find more gun owners to seize guns from? Isn't it a fact that to buy a gun today you have to be checked anyway?" --John Birch, Concealed Carry |

"police think most of those guns are still on the streets."
"That's because the detectives on the case say they were unable to get a search warrant to recover the guns from a West Palm Beach apartment because a Palm Beach County judge, upset at being called at 3:30a.m., refused to sign it."

Law enforcement officials and criminologists say there are good reasons San Francisco repeatedly finds itself at the center of national dragnets. |

-- The Seattle Post-Intelligencer tells us that we can't afford to let people do business without government interference.
"Those who sponsor these shows are by all accounts honest, law-abiding citizens themselves, who would be loath to be party to the sale of a firearm to buyers who are criminals or mentally unqualified to possess them. Background checks will help prevent that from happening." |

"In the Justice Department, John Ashcroft's assistant for legal policy is Viet Dinh, formerly a law professor at Georgetown University. He is now an architect of our war against terrorism.
"Our job here," Viet Dinh tells the Legal Times, "is to defend freedom."
There are those, however, including this columnist, who believe that Mr. Dinh, Mr. Ashcroft and President Bush have been seriously eroding the American freedoms they fiercely believe they are defending." --Nat Hentoff |

The Anti-gun nuts managed to convince four of Minnesota's former governors to sign a letter opposing the Minnesota Personal Protection Act (a shall-issue reform bill).
This bill passed the House last year, and failed in the Senate by one vote.
The bill is still active this year (Minnesota has two-year sessions), and if we can get it through the Senate this time, the governor has said he will sign it. |

A new study shows North Carolina does the best job in the nation of automating criminal records, but not good enough to keep hundreds of people from buying guns who "should not have them."
North Carolina received a B-plus, the highest grade, for adequately automating 94% of its felony and domestic violence records, according to the Jan. 16 study by the "Americans for Gun Safety Foundation."
But 355 "illegal buyers" were still able to obtain a firearm in North Carolina over the past 2˝ years, the "study" found.

"Reading the morning paper, you come across a wire-service article on a subject you know well -- guns. The article is filled with biased language ("gun violence," "spraying bullets" "million moms") and statistics that are either made up or cooked from highly unscientific methodology ("12 students killed by guns every day," "43 times more likely to be killed by a gun in your own home"). You grumble about media bias, then turn the page."
