Personal freedom begins with gun rights

"Of all the issues being debated in today's marketplace of opinion, one issue remains inviolate – the belief that everyone is free from bodily harm. Whether it takes the form of being beaten, murdered, raped or unfairly searched is irrelevant - any attack, no matter how placid, on a person's own body is, by definition, immoral."

"How that right is protected is where the true arguments begin, and where the arguments will continue in today's political world."

"Although the Bill of Rights was hotly debated prior to ratification, there was little disagreement among the Founders on how to determine whether a person's body was being violated." ...

"One sector of the American economy that is booming is the absolute orgy of guns and ammunition sales. I am pretty certain President Obama will not say anything positive about this economic news."

"I have read more than one report that shows how the surge of civilian firepower sales began back when it appeared that Obama was likely to be elected. The already-brisk guns and ammo market blew up another 25% once he was elected. Reason: freedom lovers do not trust liberal President Obama. His nomination for Attorney General, Mr. Eric Holder, proves that distrust is justified."

"I had the pleasure, this week, of carefully reading the Supreme Court's opinions in District of Columbia v. Heller for my course in Constitutional Law. In that decision, the High Court declared for the first time that the Second Amendment to the Constitution protects the right of citizens to possess firearms, including handguns, and to have them ready at least for the defense of their own homes."

"Letter writer Robert Tambini gets it half right. The aim of gun regulations is to ratchet up the difficulty of ownership to the point that effectively voids the Second Amendment before we comprehend what is happening."

"In every state where right to carry has been enacted ... violent crime has dropped. In Australia, where a total gun confiscation was enacted, in the following year armed robberies went up by 45 percent, and murder by 7 percent, and in the most populated state, almost 300 percent. The government is baffled why. The answer is simple: Only law-abiding citizens turned in their guns while criminals rejoiced in an unarmed citizenry. For a quarter of a century, gun violence showed steady decline until this confiscation." ...

"John Muesing was shot and killed last week outside my home. ... He had a gun and was killed with a gun. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to 'bear arms' and so, until some point, Muesing was simply exercising a right."

"I do not believe the amendment gives one the right to kill or be killed ..."

"And to your armed readers, I ask this: What is your gun for? Do you really believe it is worth your life or those around you? Are you so far from being a John Muesing? "The genius of concealed carry is that thugs in any given neighborhood are entirely uncertain as to who is armed, and who will likely respond with lethal force when the thug creates the grave danger aggression. Here is another one of those things the anti-gun movement does not tell the average layman in the so-called gun debates, cases of grave danger which number in the millions thanks to one dynamic. Most thugs know very well how a rape, a robbery or a mayhem can rapidly deteriorate into a case of no witnesses. Refusing to be a victim of this sort of violent crime - and being able to make your refusal stick - can make all the difference in the world, your world." ...

It would also remove the current problem of people being cited for concealed carry without a permit when open carrying in their car. Those in favor argued that the local governments should have the right to decide if they want guns out of their facilities, but opponents say the bill would create too many conflicting rules across the state.

People who are licensed to carry concealed handguns would be allowed to take them into church under a bill filed by Arkansas lawmakers.

The bill is backed by 10 Republican and five Democratic legislators. It would remove churches or houses of worship from the list of places where concealed handguns cannot be carried.

The bill also would allow concealed guns in the parking lots of places of worship.

State Representative Beverly Pyle says it would make churches safer because would-be attackers could no longer assume that worshipers are unarmed and defenseless.

A Senate committee has killed a bill that would allow localities to ban the possession on guns in libraries, parks and other government property.

The Senate Local Government Committee voted 5-10 Tuesday for Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple’s bill, which would have allowed the localities to pass ordinances making it illegal to carry guns on government property.

Whipple argued that the state already bars individuals from carrying guns in churches, courthouses and public schools and that localities have the right to determine if they want to keep guns out of their facilities.

Opponents argued that passing the bill would create a patchwork of rules across the state and that law-abiding gunowners would be the ones most affected.
