It wasn't that long ago that everyone swore by "the bigger, the better" when it came to shotguns.

However, with a few recent introductions, small-bore shotguns are generating a lot of attention from shooters and hunters, who initially dismissed them.

Burris on Wednesday debuted a new variant in its well-liked FastFire red dot series that is light and ready for use on most of the popular micro 9 pistols on the market. The new FastFire Compact, or FastFire C, utilizes the common RMSc pattern optics footprint and brings a lot of features to the game for its $276 suggested price. Light, with an all-up weight of 0.44 ounces, it uses a polymer frame but instead of a common plastic lens as seen on many other MRDs, it has an aspherical glass lens with minimal bluing and field curvature in a 22x17mm window to eliminate the "fisheye" affect.

The Washington Examiner is reporting on several self-defense cases in 2023, described as reminders to would-be “murderers, thieves, and sexual offenders” about the importance of the Second Amendment and why the Founding Fathers included it in the Bill of Rights.

It is a treatise on some notable incidents in which armed private citizens defended themselves, their loved ones and their homes over the past 12 months.

The 350 Legend and 300 AAC Blackout are two centerfire rifle cartridges that are often employed by deer hunters to bag that trophy buck or stock their freezers full of venison every fall.

Although both cartridges are excellent options for taking down whitetail or feral hogs, this comparison really comes down to understanding the purpose that each cartridge was developed for.

A woman working at her horse stables near Lake Worth Beach in September was shot in the back by a stray bullet from people using part of their property as a target range. One neighbor said shooters there often use semiautomatic weapons and have even fired cannons. At least five 911 calls came from residents in the area in 2023 complaining about the practice and there have been numerous other firing-range-adjacent shootings across the state in the last decades.

California’s new law banning firearms in most public places took effect Monday while legal challenges continue. Last month, U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney, a George W. Bush appointee, blocked the law from taking effect in a Dec. 20 decision that found it to be “sweeping, repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court.” But the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily paused Carney’s injunction on Saturday, allowing the law to take effect beginning in 2024.

Perhaps one of the most common conversational questions asked of shooting sports enthusiasts is this: If you could only have one handgun, what would it be? During my three decades of related pursuits, the answer to that question has often been a medium-frame .357 Magnum revolver, such as the Ruger GP100 or Smith & Wesson 686, with six- or seven-shot cylinders and barrels between three- to four-inches in length.

How everyday citizens reminded criminals why the Second Amendment matters

Throughout 2023, everyday citizens reminded would-be murderers, thieves, and sexual offenders why the Founding Fathers wrote that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Amid rising anti-police sentiment and left-wing politicians pushing soft-on-crime legislation, countless people found themselves face to face with criminals wanting to do them harm, but these lawful gun owners stood their ground and defended their families, homes, and businesses.

Today, January 2nd, the Pennsylvania State Legislature begins the 2024 legislative session. As in 2023, the Legislature can expect to see both pro and anti-gun bills introduced this year. Gun owners and sportsmen throughout the state must stay actively involved to defend freedom.

Your NRA will continue to fight to promote and protect your right to keep and bear arms and hunting heritage. Our members remain the most powerful political force in American history, and together, we will secure the Second Amendment for present and future generations.

What could be better than an AR-15 rifle? An AR-style 12-gauge shotgun, of course! What a great idea. Nearly everyone I know either owns an AR-15 or knows how they operate. Learning to shoot a shotgun of similar style is easy.

The potential for speed, extended magazine capacity, and custom optics is great thus making it an ideal gun for competition. Tokarev USA uses this concept and combines it with an unbelievably low price point to put one of these beauties in reach of any shooter. Stay tuned as I examine and shoot the TAR 12MP.

It’s difficult to believe that we’ve come to the close of yet another year of the “World’s Oldest and Largest Firearm Authority.” Coverage in the past 12 issues has included a raft of product reviews and industry and political news as it pertains to our long-cherished exercise of the Second Amendment—and this issue is no different.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers" delegated directly to the citizen, and `is excepted out of the general powers of government.' A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking power." [Cockrum v. State, 24 Tex. 394, at 401-402 (1859)]
