We're giving a gun away in hopes of inspiring more of our readers to support us. The fundraiser is going slower than we need it to go to get us to a major, new, expansive program we'll be launching in the next 60 days.
Soon, we will be paying gun owners and gun rights activists to promote KeepAndBearArms.com.
Between here and there, we require support. Thank you, kindly, to those who have seen fit to help.
For every $20 you donate to KABA, you'll get one chance in 750 to win a very nice firearm.

ORIGINAL TITLE: "Obituary: Attorney John D. Brophy championed gun rights" -------
California attorney John Brophy has passed away. Mr. Brophy's name was on the various legal filings in the Silveira v. Lockyer Second Amendment lawsuit. He was "backup" counsel of record in case something happened to lead attorney Gary Gorski. Mr. Gorski said today by phone: "Mr. Brophy's input on Second Amendment related issues was valuable and insightful. I was with him just a couple of days before he died, and I'll miss him."
Mr. Brophy was a good man and a strong supporter of the right of the people to keep and bear arms. His passion and devotion will be sorely missed, and we wish only peace and healing in this time of grief for his family. |

"The 31-year-old's lawyers will send a written request to the New South Wales Firearms Registry today for the return of his gun licence, which was automatically suspended when he was charged with assaulting his former girlfriend last September."
"But Diamond has now been cleared of the assault and also escaped a conviction after admitting to not properly securing his shotgun at his home." |

"This could be a very bad year for gun control. The grim news began last week when Congress slashed, from 90 days to one, the time officials can retain records of gun purchasers. It may worsen with the lapse of the 1994 assault-weapons ban. Congress should reverse its decision on gun-sale records, and renew and strengthen the assault-weapons ban."
------- And why would that be? So the government can keep closer track on law abiding citizens who choose to make a legitimate purchase and who would be able to resist tyranny? So the feds can spend more money enforcing an ineffective and ridiculous law? Or so the politicians can lie and claim that they're "doing something" about crime to get votes? |

"How can you come out and say it's an unjust shooting when you don't know all the facts?"
"The consensus among officers is that Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly moved to quickly mollify the family of Mr. Stansbury and to head off retaliatory unrest in the neighborhood. Many of the officers also said that the strategy was unnecessary and that the family and the surrounding community have more patience and are more interested in letting the facts come out in due time than city officials have given them credit for."

"In Time magazine this week, conservative pundit and blogger extraordinaire Andrew Sullivan penned an excellent column on the nanny-state policies of President Bush." ...
"Sullivan claims in his essay that while President Bush’s foreign policy is decidedly pro-freedom, that same sense of liberty curiously stops at American shores, where the president endorses a conservative form of the big-government nanny state.
"But according to University of Alabama Professor David Beito, the contrast between the Bush administration's domestic and foreign policies is not unusual. Governments that go to war almost always flex muscle at home."

"This whole issue boils down to the futility of certain gun control laws and law enforcement's inability to protect our citizens at all times. Firearms allow citizens to defend themselves and their families in the absence of police officers. Guns become a great equalizer and allow females and persons of small stature to easily defend themselves against bad guys. By unfairly restricting firearm ownership by law abiding citizens, you remove their ability to defend themselves and their homes. This gives a motivated criminal the upper hand. They retain the power in a given confrontation because they are not hampered by the limitations of law. Otherwise law abiding citizens must then become criminals just to defend their homes and families from these mopes." |

Whether a student or not, campus journalism is always good for a read...and sometimes good for a laugh. But as we read this story from the student voice of the Ohio State University, we're not laughing at the writer. Instead, we're laughing at Bob Taft's sudden conversion into a concealed carry advocate.
What to do about concealed guns
"Gov. Bob Taft intended on taking a bite out of Ohio's crime when he signed a legislative bill to legalize the carrying of concealed handguns."
"In an effort to prevent crime rates from rising, the Ohio legislature has followed the lead of 45 other states by upholding the Second Amendment as a constitutional right mandated by every law-abiding citizen." ...
"If Taft had always been the advocate he now claims to have been, he would have heeded the mountains of evidence we provided, which proves that the crime-fighting impact of concealed carry laws are lessened with extensive and unnecessary training requirements. Instead of appeasing them, he would have told the 'Ohioans who fear guns will only contribute to higher crime levels' to look noticed that neither Pennsylvania nor Indiana have any training requirements whatsoever, and have no problems. Were he such a great supporter of the right to bear arms, he would have told the Ohio State Highway Patrol that their officer safety concerns about law-abiding citizens were baseless, and ordered them to stick to writing speeding tickets." |

"Recently, astute readers have been treated to a couple of tasty freudian slips in mentions of Ms. Toby Hoover's personal anti-gun campaign, the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence."
"In a recent article, an OSU Lantern writer referred to Hoover's group as the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Control, and said Hoover 'would applaud Taft's efforts on initiating background checks, only if he plans to update the database in which they are stored.' If all her comments were like this, and with a group name like that, we might consider joining."
"Before you pass it off as a rookie error, consider that the Dayton Daily News recently termed Hoover's group the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Safety." |

"For a second time, Republican leaders of the state Assembly put off a vote Wednesday on whether to override the governor's veto of a bill allowing Wisconsin residents to carry concealed weapons."
"The Assembly originally placed the vote on Tuesday's calendar, but Assembly Speaker John Gard then rescheduled the vote for Thursday, citing several reasons including the absence of one member."
"He delayed the vote again so that a lawmaker who won a special election Tuesday night could be sworn in -- and because other members had problems making Thursday's vote."
"He said the Assembly will vote next Tuesday." ...

"A teenager says he was pistol whipped by a Dawson councilman, 'I wasn't really scared. I was confused and I didn't know what was going on.' "
"Now, Joseph Breedlove is facing felony charges. The beating was apparently a case of mistaken identity. 16-year-old Michael Jones says he was followed to his girlfriend's home Wednesday night by a man he didn't know, then was jumped and beaten."
"Police say the man who attacked him is Dawson councilman Joseph Breedlove."
"Police say there was another disturbance involving Breedlove that same night, but no one was hurt. Breedlove is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault and cruelty to children."

"When federal civil rights investigators begin their probe of the Virgin Islands Police Department, their highest priority should be a thorough examination of the department's use of deadly force, say the family members of those slain by V. I. police officers."
"The special investigative report found that many of the uses of deadly force were so far outside the boundaries of accepted law enforcement behavior, they astounded national experts."
"The records used for the special investigative report show VI police officers have threatened people with their pistols on and off duty, pistol-whipped people who never committed a crime, robbed people and sot unarmed suspects - and never have been disciplined by the department." |

"A TOP level inquiry has been launched after a senior army officer returning from overseas peace-keeping duties was arrested at Reading Station carrying a rifle, pistol and ammunition."
"The Royal Logistics Corps major - who had been promoted to acting lieutenant colonel - had flown in hours earlier from Afghanistan."
"It is not yet clear why he was armed to the teeth and had not handed in his weapons to the military authorities after completing his six-month tour of duty in Kabul."
"But after landing at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire he caught a train from Swindon, still wearing full battle dress."

"A POLICEWOMAN and a male colleague are recovering after they were the targets in a dramatic drive-by machine-gun shooting."
"They were with four colleagues from the Territorial Support Group which had stopped a car in Stratford on Saturday."
"As they questioned two teenagers in a vehicle, another car pulled up and, forensic experts discovered yesterday, TEN shots were fired in their direction."
"They have also now revealed that a sub-machine gun, and not a semi-automatic pistol as first thought, was used in the attack."
"Police are appealing for witnesses. The female officer received grazes to her shoulder from a bullet in the incident which has shocked police."
"She was saved from a more serious injury by her body armour." |

"Officer Richard Neri, who killed an unarmed Brooklyn teenager Saturday, is leaning toward testifying before a grand jury that could begin hearing evidence in the controversial shooting today."
"Neri shot Stansbury in the chest just before 1 a.m. Saturday during a roof-to-ground patrol at the Louis Armstrong Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant."
"If Neri goes before the grand jury, he's expected to testify that when Hallik opened the door Stansbury startled him and he reflexively jerked his 9-mm Glock pistol upward causing it to accidentally go off, according to sources close to the officer."
------- Okay, one last time. Pulling the trigger while the gun is pointing at someone is not "accidentally going off"! |

"A former Orange County corrections officer admitted in federal court Thursday that he dealt drugs to jail inmates."
"Ricky Brandenberger told a federal judge Thursday morning that he was pleading guilty because he is guilty, and said he was very sorry for what happened, especially to his family. That includes his wife, an Orange County Sheriff's sergeant."
"Back in November, when Brandenberger was arrested, it was tough to imagine this day. Initially, he denied all of it and had planned to defend himself against the charges." |

"There's barely a speech by President Bush that doesn't cite the glories of human freedom. It's God's gift to mankind, he believes. ...Within the U.S., the Bush Administration has shown an unusually hostile attitude toward the exercise of personal freedom. When your individual choices conflict with what the Bush people think is good for you, they have been only too happy to intervene. The government, Bush clearly believes, has a right to be involved in many personal decisions you make — punishing some, encouraging others, nudging and prodding the public to live the good life as the President understands it. The nanny state, much loved by Democrats, is thriving under Republicans." ...
"He is doubling the federal money currently spent to admonish teens to practice sexual abstinence. He is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on antidrug propaganda and sending federal agents to bust pot clubs for those using medical marijuana to ease the pain of crippling diseases. Republican Senators are even trying to withhold federal funding from states that allow medical-marijuana ads on public transport." ...
