MI: Alpena County board tables gun rights resolution vote until February

Several dozen supporters of the Second Amendment on Tuesday encouraged the Alpena County Board of Commissioners to pass a resolution proclaiming the county a Second Amendment sanctuary.

The resolution is non-binding and is basically just a title. All governments must adhere to the Constitution, and both state law and federal law trump local policies.

After sometimes heated comments from the public on Tuesday, commissioners tabled the matter until next month.

Meanwhile, the Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners is expected to consider the same resolution at its meeting on Thursday, and the Alcona County board has discussed the issue.

The Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners will consider becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary on Thursday.

The board plans to discuss a resolution declaring support for the Second Amendment and saying the county would “not enforce against any citizen an unconstitutional firearms law.”

The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the District Court courtroom at the county courthouse, 151 E. Huron Ave., Rogers City.

“We’re just going to discuss it,” board Chairman Lee Gapczynski said.

Discussion of the same resolution led to some raised voices at the Alpena County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.

Alcona County is also discussing the resolution, but has not put it on a meeting agenda.

A man who was stabbed during a domestic dispute involving his sister ended up being hospitalized and now faces charges for physically assaulting her, Lincoln County officials are saying.

Stephen Gavin, 36, faces multiple charges including strangulation, assault on a female, and threatening communication.

Officers initially responded to calls about a domestic dispute Tuesday on Finger Merrick Trail in regards to an assault. Officers discovered that a woman and her brother had a dispute that became physical in nature and ended with Gavin pushing his sister down to the ground and attempting to strangle her. The victim used a knife in self-defense and stabbed Gavin.

Washington itself provides a perfect example, and one with which Bowser should be familiar. In the time since the Heller decision of 2008 forced the district at least to allow gun ownership in the home, the number of annual murders in Washington has fallen. Even amid a rapidly growing population, the annual homicide totals have never reached the levels of 2008 or earlier. I'm not arguing that this slight liberalization caused the decrease, but the fact that no dramatic increase occurred says everything you need to know about the theory that gun control laws prevent killings.

While it’s true that part of the inspiration for this build was to use the countless bins of Glock parts that I’ve amassed for review over the years, when the time came to select the particular components to be used I was reminded of something the Father of the Modern Pistol Technique, the late COL. Jeff Cooper said regarding a good pistol for self-defense: namely that there are three key features that make up a good fighting pistol: It must have sights you can see, a trigger you can manage and be chambered in a caliber that’s up to the task.

State of Safety Action—an Oregon-based gun safety group—filed a petition in July to put a gun safety measure, on the November 2020 General Election ballot, called the Cindy Tuille and Steve Forsyth Act. But state legislators may pass a gun safety bill with the same requirements as early as this February.

A presentation of a draft resolution Monday night to the Vernon Township Council in support of creating a Second Amendment-supporting community, led to a debate among members of the audience, taking sides on various angles of this type of resolution.

As several communities within Sussex County have adopted this type of resolutions, members of the Skylands Tea Party — a group that encompasses Sussex, Morris, Warren and Passaic counties — and other individuals in support, approached Vernon’s council with it, in hopes it would be included on an upcoming meeting.

Calling those in attendance "white nationalists" or "white supremacists" was the laziest cliched reaction the liberal left has. I guess he forgot to add the label of homophobes.

One of my favorite speakers was the keynote speaker who happened to be a young black woman whose first comment was "Man, this is the worst white nationalist gathering I've ever been to they had to bring me in." She knew how the event was going to be portrayed despite the facts.

Gaston County passed a resolution Tuesday night to become a second amendment sanctuary, according to Gaston County Commissioner Tracy Philbeck.

WBTV reported last week that the county would be voting soon on the new resolution. The resolution means the county is formally stating they will protect the rights of responsible gun owners and make sure they are not restricted.

“When I was elected, I took an oath to defend and uphold our constitution. Tonight we passed a resolution making Gaston County a 2nd Amendment sanctuary reinforcing that we would NOT allow any county dollars to be used for any purpose that would infringe on our 2nd Amendment,” a tweet from Philbeck read.

Not all legislation that Second Amendment supporters don’t notice right away is a threat to our rights.

Sometimes, the legislation that comes in below the radar actually improves the situation. One such bill is HR 5289, The Home Defense and Competitive Shooting Act, introduced by Representative Roger Marshall (R-KS).

According to a release by Representative Marshall, this legislation removes certain rifles from the provisions of the National Firearms Act. Specifically, rifles with barrels shorter than 16 inches.

A Second Amendment sanctuary designation for Livingston County may soon be a reality.

The symbolic designation that is not legally binding has been making waves nationwide after nearly every county in Virginia passed resolutions affirming their residents' Second Amendment right to bear fire arms and for law enforcement to not enforce laws related to gun safety.

A resolution could come by Feb. 18, the next scheduled meeting of the Livingston County Board of Commissioners' Infrastructure and Development and Public Safety subcommittee. If passed, it would be sent to the full Board of Commissioners for consideration.
