"General Dynamics says it has formed a joint venture partnership with German gunmaker Heckler & Koch to develop a replacement for the standard infantry weapon, the M16 rifle." ...
"The XM8, proposed as a replacement for the M16 and the newer M4 carbine rifle, would be based on a weapon already developed by Heckler & Koch. The rifle is modular, meaning various barrels can be swapped to make it a sub-machine gun, a sharpshooter's rifle, a heavy-duty machine gun or a grenade launcher." ... |

Q When my son went to the airport recently, he had an unloaded pistol in a locked case checked in his luggage. Because he didn't declare it to the skycap, he was arrested. His bail was $5,600. Is this the usual consequence for being under the impression that as long as it's checked into luggage that is going into the belly of the airplane, it's within the requirements for transporting a weapon?
A The Transportation Security Administration cites specific regulatory requirements for transporting a firearm, some of which your son did correctly (the firearm was unloaded and in a locked container, and was not in his carry-on baggage).
But TSA also requires that the firearm must be declared orally or in writing, in accordance with the air carrier's procedures. -------

State prosecutors say they will not bring homicide charges against a 61-year-old Harvey, Illinois man who shot and killed his 21-year-old stepson.
Harvey police say the older man shot John Shedrich on Friday afternoon as Shedrich attempted to force his way into the home he had formerly shared.
They say Shedrich had thrown bricks through a window and kicked down the front door to get in.
Police said the stepfather, whom they declined to identify, fired only in self-defense. |

Three home invaders were repelled in a shootout Sunday night with a homeowner that left one of the attackers dead and one seriously wounded, police said.
Police said 47-year-old Edwin Vega was one of three people who broke into a DeKalb Avenue home. The homeowner opened fire on the assailants, killing Vega. The two others fled, but not before one was wounded.
The homeowner was also shot and wounded in the attack.
A short time later a man showed up at St. Vincent's Hospital with a gunshot wound to the mouth. Police said, Frankie Rodriguez, 26, of Bridgeport, was one of the attackers who fled.
Rodriguez was placed under arrest and taken to Bridgeport Hospital where he was under police guard. The homeowner was admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds. |
