The [CCRKBA] is encouraging members and supporters throughout Illinois and in neighboring Michigan and Indiana to flood the Cook County, Illinois Board of Commissioners with phone calls and mail opposing proposed ordinances that would effectively put firearms dealers out of business and ban guns in the county."

"... [Commissioner Larry] Suffredin's 'Deadly Weapon Dealers' ordinance would ban gun shows in the county and prevent licensed firearms dealers from operating within ten miles of each other. The proposed 'Safe Streets and Weapons Registration' ordinance would require registration of all guns and gun owners in the county, and ban handguns that do not have loaded chamber indicators." ...

"Lately, liberals (read: statists) have been giving me a hard time about my opposition to a gun control initiative that would limit gun purchases to one per month per owner. Since I a) don't like the government telling me how many guns I can own, and b) just hate having liberals (read: statists) mad at me, I've come up with a solution. It takes the form of a New Year’s resolution sure to make everyone happy (myself especially)."

"I hereby resolve to help the cause of gun control in America by purchasing only one gun per month in 2008. Naturally, I am providing a list of those guns below with pretty pictures you can access with a click of the mouse. I hope you enjoy the following selections:" ...

"Over the years the anti-gun left has spread a lot of disinformation about guns and gun owners. Aided by a complicit establishment media they have been largely unchallenged in the court of public opinion. Even though it seems like there is a conspiracy between anti-gun groups and the establishment media to guns, nothing can be further from the truth."

"The sad truth is both groups honestly believe the crap they disseminate about guns."

"After Richard Nixon's election win for the presidency in 1968, a news reporter famously noted that she couldn't believe he won since she didn't know anybody that voted for him. ..."

"The Reporter recently received a letter from Terence Geoghegan disputing Bernard Lehrer’s argument that a tragic shooting in Omaha, Neb. underscores the need for stricter gun control laws (See 'Omaha underscores need for gun control,' letters, 12/13/07). Geoghegan also emailed his response to Lehrer and a debate over gun control laws has ensued between the two lawyers ensued. Here are some excerpts:" ...

"For many of us, the holiday season reminds us of all the great things we have to be thankful for. For others, the holidays elicit reminders of a lost family member or friend. For those who have lost a family member or friend because of some form of gun violence, it's a reminder that we must continue speaking out against it."

"On Nov. 20, 2007 the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it would hear a case challenging a circuit court ruling in March 2007 about the District of Columbia's ban on handguns. ... Now on appeal to the Supreme Court, there is an opportunity to reverse this erroneous ruling and give jurisdiction back to the local authorities to decide what is best for their communities. ..." ...

"Whenever someone wantonly opens fire and kills a group of innocent people, the natural question is, what can be done so it doesn't happen again? There's no easy answer - no silver bullet, so to speak - but Congress has recently taken one small step that should help."

"It passed a bill, born of painful Long Island experience and the tragedy at Virginia Tech, that will help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous, mentally ill people. Wonder of wonders, it reflects common ground between passionate champions of gun control, such as bill sponsor Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), and the National Rifle Association. It needs only President George W. Bush's signature to become law." ...

"Having scheduled a March 2008 hearing for the case of District of Columbia v. Heller ... the Supreme Court will face a fusillade of angry responses — no matter who wins."

"Both sides (plus National Rifle Association lobbyists and gun-control advocates) will use the Second Amendment to buttress their briefs. But regarding tangled and contentious issues of ownership and regulation of guns in the 21st century, our Second Amendment — crafted to address 18th-century national security threats — offers no solution."

"Indeed, ratified in 1791, the complete Second Amendment considered firearms essential for group defense of our communities ..."

"... Yet, even in 1791, this right to bear arms was deemed conditional." ...

"Your editorial Dec. 27 editorial about easy accessibility to assault weapons, prompted by the two teens who carried an AK-47 knock-off assault rifle through Solvay, was perfectly sensible; the hysterical and erroneous responses printed Jan. 1 were not."

"First, it is true that the assault weapons banned under the federal law that lapsed in 2004 were, like many hunting rifles, semi-automatic that is, firing a bullet with each pull of the trigger ... But they differed from hunting weapons because they were designed expressly for military use ..." ...

"If the Supreme Court is as hermetically sealed from outside influence as many believe, then the recent carnage in Nebraska and Colorado will have no influence on its decision whether the Second Amendment gives individual Americans the right to bear whatever arms they choose or limits it to a collective right controlled by the state for the national defense."

"But if the justices do not operate in a vacuum, then the two disturbed individuals who shot up an Omaha shopping mall and two Colorado religious centers with AK47 assault rifles never meant for civilian ownership will weigh heavily on their minds when they consider whether a lower court was correct in overturning the District of Columbia's super-strict gun law. ..." ...

"In a recent interview, Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida stated: 'The need for guns in the cockpit is just nearly not [sic] as acute as it once was. There are all kind [sic] of screening systems, there is now the reinforced cockpit door, there are air marshals, we now have a lots of checks and balances.' Hearing this, some might ask, 'Do airline pilots still need to be armed?' The answer is, 'Absolutely — now more than ever.'"

"It's time to wake up, conservatives! It's time to face the hard truth of the Fred Thompson candidacy ... It's time to find out just what Fred Thompson hasn't done as a U.S. Senator from Tennessee."...

"And it is even more obvious that Senator Fred Thompson has chosen to ignore the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In 1998, he had the audacity to vote no on a bill that would've forced gun dealers to sell handguns with trigger locks, and in 1999, he had the intestinal fortitude to vote no on a Lautenberg Bill that would've forced background checks for all firearm sales at gun shows. It's apparent that Senator Thompson has chosen to side with the rights of the private citizens to keep and bear arms ..." ...

"The column noted that that California decision would have little effect on eventual banning of lead at this side of the country, but the same can't be said of New York's first step in that direction." ...

"The dwindling hunting population would likely be able to withstand a ban on lead ... But target shooters and other .22 rimfire aficianados would take a major hit."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
No one can read our Constitution without concluding that the people who wrote it wanted their government severely limited; the words "no" and "not" employed in restraint of government power occur 24 times in the first seven articles of the Constitution and 22 more times in the Bill of Rights. — EDMUND A.
