Columnist's Second Edition Book Says There's No Such Thing As Sensible Gun Laws In The United States

"John Longenecker's second edition of Transfer Of Wealth is an expose of official go-nowhere anti-crime policies with warnings of predatory industrial complexes thriving on violence, the 2006 United Nations threats to U.S. personal sovereignty, high-tech surveillance and suspicioning of citizens, and Hurricane Katrina's 2006 untoward agendas bent on testing abolition of sovereignty." ...

"Longenecker points to how these relate more than ever before to the non-gun owner households across America such that even the impartial homes are profoundly affected by the more than 22,000 gun laws currently in force, the hi-tech surveillance and the self-defense restraints." ...

"So how does a peace-loving, anti-war female wind up with a Smith and Wesson .38 Special and a membership in the National Rifle Association? Partly because I'm a country-girl at heart and partly because I believe in Americans' rights to defend themselves."

"Most of you know me as someone who is passive and a believer in world peace. On the other hand, I was raised in a small southern town so I'm naturally at ease around guns and people who own them."

"My first experience with guns was at the age of nine when I was first introduced to a 30.06. ... it felt completely natural to hold it in my hands. Since then, I have fired a large number of guns and have been comfortable with all of them as well. ..." ...

"WITH its chilling warnings about a 'marching axis of adversaries' and sinister pictures of innocent citizens being terrorised by evil, it could easily be mistaken for a government battle plan against a global jihad."

"But Freedom in Peril, a 27-page booklet, is actually the work of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the largest pro-gun lobby in the United States, and the 'danger' of which it warns is the revitalised Democratic Party."

"In what detractors have dubbed a paranoid campaign, the NRA is galvanising its members with dire warnings about how the right to bear arms - embodied in the Second Amendment to the US Constitution - is under a new threat." ...

"From this writer’s perspective the absolute best thing to come out of the Presidency of George W. Bush is the fact that so many liberal Democrats have changed their position on gun control. It’s as if the scales were lifted from their eyes, they realized that government itself could no longer be trusted ... Former gun grabbers in the hundreds of thousands no longer feel the intense desire to disarm their fellow citizens in the name of a better society ... These liberal Democrats now understand the true nature and purpose of the Second Amendment, it was never designed to enable us to obtain wild game whenever and wherever we liked, it was always about being able to defend ourselves from a corrupt and evil government. ..."

Nearly six weeks after police shot an unarmed man to death in a hail of 50 bullets, the New York police department has hired a research group to review its firearms training.

Five officers using semiautomatic pistols fired a total of 50 times while trying to stop a car on Nov. 25 outside a topless bar in Queens, killing the driver and injuring two of his friends. Police have said they suspected the men were going to retrieve a gun to settle a dispute, but no weapon was recovered.

The shooting sparked community outrage and prompted a grand jury investigation to determine whether the officers should face criminal charges. The officers were put on leave pending the outcome.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

I have seen some letters recently supporting the idea that Canadians should carry guns for self-defence.

The cruel truth is that a plenitude of guns in the U.S. has resulted in a horrendous rate of killings, many times the Canadian level and mostly in the home.

With a gun handy, as it is in many U.S. households, husband kills wife, kids kill each other. People seeking help after having car trouble have been shot through doors by nervous homeowners.

Ron MacIsaac,

Victoria.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. — John Stuart Mills
