"Gun rights advocates often point out that the purpose of having access to firearms is not just to keep the occasional thief of murderer at bay but also to be used as a check on government. The idea is that an armed citizenry can and would scare off the state in case it became too tyrannical."
"The problem with the view that 'guns will keep us free' is that if the majority of the population does not want freedom, then no amount of private gun ownership will make a difference. Indeed, this is what is happening today in the United States. There are millions of firearms in private hands yet the government continues to violate more rights as it grows ever more powerful." ... |

"Richard Williams was sentenced yesterday to life in prison without parole for murdering his wife with a nail gun. My heart goes out to their children & extended family members for their tragic loss. Richard's attorney tried to blame the murder on depression. That often works but did not this time. I was surprised he didn't blame it on the excessive availability of unregulated nail guns."
"I suddenly wondered how often nail gun violence takes place, so I did a google search for 'nail gun death' and there were about 197,000 results. With all of that nail gun violence out there, why hasn't the Brady campaign asked for legislation regulating nail guns? They are after all supposed to be interested in stopping all forms of violence are they not?" ... |

"The latest call from the Loony Left and the Brady Bunch is to 'get military weapons off the streets' in America. Paul Helmke of the Brady Bunch said in a recent blog post on the HuffingtonPost:"
"Why do we allow weapons of war on our streets which make it easier to kill more people, more quickly? This is America, not Iraq." "Often screeds like these are accompanied by phrases like, 'The founding fathers never intended people to have machine guns.' The implication being that the founding fathers wouldn't have agreed with military-grade weapons in the hands of the common people."
"That just doesn't square with the facts. Military-grade weapons were exactly what the founding fathers had in mind. ..." ... |

"Here's a hoot for Second Amendment and judicial activism pedants and frauds."
"Read Adam Freedman's article in the New York Times on Dec. 16. He talks about the use of the comma and the fact that there is one after 'Militia,' 'State' and 'Arms' but none after 'people.'"
"At the end of the article, with tongue in cheek, he says, 'Advocates of both gun rights and gun control are making a tactical mistake by focusing on the commas of the Second Amendment.'"
"After all, couldn't one just as easily obsess about the founder's use of capitalization. Perhaps the next amicus brief will find the true intent of the amendment by pointing out that 'Militia' and 'State' are capitalized in the original, whereas 'people' is not." ... |

"Well, it's happened again. Another 'lone gunman' takes an instrument of death—the fetish of choice in the US—and kills 8 people at a shopping mall in Nebraska and then himself. The tragedy of this particular instance will be superceded only by it's repeat, again and again, until the Second Amendment is finally interpreted for what it was meant for, a militia to guard against invasion. In other words, our armed forces. We'll have to leave it to the Supreme Court to make that decision (doubtful in my sad opinion) but we can hope. The Superior Court of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, has issued an injunction against Athens-Clarke County, prohibiting the county from enforcing its ban on carrying guns in county parks. The temporary injunction was consented to by the county as it contemplates repeal of its ordinance in light of the Court of Appeals Opinion that a similar ordinance in Coweta County, Georgia, is preempted by state law.
