The Primary Reason to Carry a Spare Magazine

There are several debates that endlessly rage in the firearms community, and one specific to concealed carry is whether or not to wear a spare magazine on your person when you are armed. A strong argument can be made that reloads virtually never happen in civilian self-defense, as the typical protocol seems to be people shoot until empty and then break contact. If the defender starts shooting, the criminal element most often becomes late for a different appointment. Therefore, in the vast majority of civilian defensive gun use, we don’t see reloads.

One man is facing assault charges after an incident led to a shooting on Wednesday in Tuscarawas County.

According to Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis L. Campbell, a man told 911 operators that his son had attacked him and that he had shot his son in the leg.

Upon arrival, investigators learned that the son had come to his 70-year-old father’s residence next door and initiated an argument that became physical.

The father said he was knocked to the ground and then attacked again, so he shot his son in the leg in self-defense.

A new law in California that bans the carrying of guns in most public places has been in effect since January 1, though legal challenges against it continue through the courts.

The law, signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom in September 2023, took effect after a US appeals court halted a lower court judge’s ruling that had blocked enforcement of the law.

The law prohibits people from carrying concealed guns in 26 categories with various locations, including hospitals, playgrounds, public transportation, stadiums, amusement parks, and museums.

The ban applies whether the person has a permit to carry a concealed weapon or not.

State law doesn't allow people to report code complaints anonymously, so Roberts knew who had "dropped a dime" on him. That sparked a feud between the two men that ended with Roberts fatally shooting Karacsonyi two years ago outside his Stuart home.

Although prosecutors ruled the shooting was in self-defense, it's fair to wonder if the tragic situation could have been avoided if state lawmakers could have simply left it up to city and county officials around Florida to determine the best way to handle code complaints.

Today, however, the terrorists’ preferred tactic is the mass shooting. As we argue in our new book, God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America, assault-style rifles have replaced explosives. And the perpetrators come mostly from the far right. Eschewing the time-intensive preparations involved in the careful construction and placement of explosive devices — as seen in Oklahoma City in 1995 and at the Atlanta Olympics the following year — domestic terrorists now prefer shooting, a far simpler tactic that is facilitated by the Second Amendment and entails simply opening fire on a group of ordinary citizens going about their daily lives.

Gun owners in California can no longer carry firearms into amusement parks, museums, churches, zoos, banks, public parks or a whole slew of other places, even if they have a concealed carry permit.

Those restrictions are part of a new state law that took effect this week, and it is already facing scrutiny in the courts.

Last month, a U.S. district judge blocked the law from taking effect, calling it “repugnant to the Second Amendment.” But a federal appeals court put a temporary hold on that ruling over the weekend, allowing the law to proceed for now.

A potential statewide legal fight may be brewing in Yuba City where the county sheriff and district attorney say they won't impede on their constituents' constitutional rights, even if it may violate state law.

Sutter County District Attorney Jennifer Dupre and Sutter County Sheriff Brandon Barnes are taking a stand saying they won't enforce a new state law that bans people with concealed weapon permits from bringing a gun to most public places.

"I think there are so many questions that haven't been answered," Dupre said of the law. "There are so many unattended consequences that might occur."

The law they are referring to is Senate Bill 2.

Lawmakers in Maine are considering new gun control bills after a deadly mass shooting in the state in which 18 people were killed.

The shooting happened little more than a month after a deputy tried to conduct a welfare check on the gunman, Robert Card, after the reservist made threats against his US Army base.

A statewide awareness alert was issued in mid-September asking every law enforcement agency in the state to watch for Card – but police were unable to locate him, and the deputy didn’t have authority to force his way in, a sheriff said.

Just 24 days later, police say Card opened fire on innocent victims in a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston.

A gun rights group filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday to challenge the constitutionality of Colorado's recently enacted ban on "ghost guns" — unserialized weapons that can be made from kits and 3D printers.

The lawsuit from the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners argues that the ban passed by the Colorado legislature in 2023 violates the rights established under the Second Amendment. The new law went into effect on Monday.

Proponents of the ban argue it has the potential to decrease gun violence, especially among young people.

The last three months of 2023 reversed a years-long downward trend in gun-related background checks.

The 2023 fourth quarter saw a 4.6 percent increase in sales run through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) compared to a year earlier, according to an industry report released on Wednesday. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the gun industry’s trade group, said adjusted NICS numbers indicated there were more than 4.7 million gun sales from October through December. It reported nearly 1.8 million in December 2023 alone, a 1.6 percent increase over 2022.

Senator Jessica Garvin files Senate Bill 1254 in response to increased gun violence across the nation and in Oklahoma in recent years. One example is the incident at McClain High School or Choctaw High School.

SB 1254 could increase the state penalty for carrying an illegal firearm onto school property.

Garvin says the bill would better protect children, teachers, staff, and visitors on school campuses across the state.

While drafting the measure, Garvin worked with schools, law enforcement, public safety officials, and even the Oklahoma Rifle Association.

Everytown for Gun Safety, a national nonprofit advocacy group, has ranked California first in the nation for the strength of its gun control laws. “For over a decade, our grassroots army has worked in lockstep with our gun safety champions to keep California families safe from senseless acts of gun violence — this ranking showcases how far we’ve come and the road ahead,” said Cassandra Whetstone, a volunteer with the California chapter of Moms Demand Action, in a statement Thursday. One of the laws, though, is being challenged in court by gun rights groups. The measure bars carrying concealed weapons in “sensitive places” such as libraries, playgrounds, churches and parks.
