I keep hearing new gun owners get bad advice. We hear it everywhere, from the news to the lunch counter. This is important because we can invent all sorts of complicated schemes as we plan our defense. It is easy to forget that time controls almost everything as we defend ourselves.

Eventually, we remember that the bad guys arrive with a plan. We get to defend ourselves, our family, and our friends with what’s physically within reach and mentally within reach.

Let’s look at some common suggestions and see how they measure against the clock.

A truck driver shot and killed a robber overnight in an apparent case of self-defense, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of US-92 and County Road 579 in Seffner.

Based on preliminary information, investigators say they believe the driver was trying to repair his broken-down truck when he was approached by a man who demanded various valuable items.

"The driver handed him several items, and the man walked away," the sheriff's office wrote in a press release.

But, authorities say the alleged thief came back.

West central Nebraska’s five state senators were busy Wednesday, introducing most of the leading bills on their personal agendas on the 2022 Legislature’s opening day.

They included North Platte Sen. Mike Groene’s proposed update to his “microTIF” program, Gordon Sen. Tom Brewer’s “constitutional carry” handgun bill and Bayard Sen. Steve Erdman’s latest version of his constitutional amendment to replace major state taxes with a “consumption tax.”

The Republican caucus in the Alabama House of Representatives released its agenda Wednesday for the 2022 legislative session, and it includes repealing the requirement for a permit to carry a handgun concealed or in a vehicle.

The list of 14 proposals includes a ban on teaching critical race theory in public schools, increased penalties for participation in riots, exempting some personal property from taxes on businesses and farms, and raising pay for public education and state employees.

There's a debate at the Indiana Statehouse over gun rights. It's about whether to eliminate the need for a gun license.

“This is a problem that affects all of us in the state of Indiana,” said Jennifer Haan with Moms Demand Action in Indiana.

She is talking about House Bill 1077, which will allow gun owners to carry without a permit. She spoke in front of lawmakers at a hearing on Wednesday.

“My children should not have to grow up in a country where we put the price of guns above their lives,” said Haan.

Gun producers and dealers are protected from civil liability if their products are used to commit crimes.

A coalition of Democratic Assemblymembers has introduced a bill that would allow individual Californians, or the government, to sue manufacturers and sellers of firearms if harm is caused by their products.

The authors of Assembly Bill 1594 are Phil Ting of San Francisco, Chris Ward of San Diego and Mike Gipson of Carson. They argue that the legislation would push gun sellers to take additional steps to prevent guns from getting into the hands of bad actors.

Jim Wilcox has long understood the importance of gun safety, but it took some advice from two of his most trusted sources – his daughters – to realize that wasn’t the case with everyone.

That prompted Wilcox, who has unofficially taught gun safety for about 10 years, to get his instructor’s license through USCCA about 1˝ years ago to provide important training to those who own firearms.

“It was my girls who influenced me to do this,” he said of teaching a Kentucky certification class through Fearless Defense LLC. “Two of my girls live in Nashville and they said lots of women buy a handgun who don’t know what to do with it. They end up putting it in a drawer and it becomes dangerous because of a lack of training.”

Modern cartridge cases are generally made of brass (sometimes steel); some are nickel-plated. The case consists of a body, which terminates at one end in a neck and mouth, and, at the other, in a thick head. A center-fire cartridge case head contains a primer pocket that holds the primer, and a flash hole that conveys the primer spark through the web of the case to the powder charge. The head also contains a headstamp of the cartridge name. A rimfire case head has no primer, but instead has priming compound located in a fold in the case rim.

According to an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation news release, an intruder was shot and killed in Bokoshe on Sunday night after allegedly assaulting a person in their home.

The OSBI said Ken Cosgrove, 49, entered a home in Bokoshe, Oklahoma, and assaulted the homeowner. Cosgrove left the house after the initial altercation, then turned around and attempted to finish what he started.

The homeowner had time to retrieve his gun, and when Cosgrove attempted to get back in, the homeowner shot and killed the intruder.

They took the 69-year-old homeowner to a hospital to treat the injuries he sustained during the assault.

A Year In, President Biden’s Bold Gun Reform Agenda Remains Largely Aspirational

Many gun reform advocates say they are disappointed by how little Biden has accomplished in his first term. His record pales in comparison to the expansive agenda he ran on in 2020. He had promised, amid a surge in gun violence, to enact sweeping overhauls that gun reform advocates like Oliver supported. Biden’s gun agenda was central to his campaign, and distinguished him from competitors like Senator Bernie Sanders, which raised expectations even higher.

Leaders of major gun reform groups predicted that his first year in office, with Democrats also controlling Congress, would be an unprecedented period of progress. Now Democrats are expected to take losses in the House and Senate midterm elections...

“Brotherly Love” surely seems to be a distant thing of the past in Philadelphia. Under the permissive policies of Philly DA Karry Krasner, and “bail reform” efforts, the city experienced a record number of shootings and murders last year.

But according to police, a Lyft driver put the brakes on a couple of armed carjackers with the help of his carry piece. While the bad guys wanted to trade up from their Honda Accord to the driver’s Infiniti, their criminal enterprise yielded enough hot lead to put them in critical condition. No innocents or animals were injured during the incident.

It happened on December 27th when Kenneth Davis Jr. interceded to try to help the store stop a man trying to shoplift a bottle of vodka.

Davis brandished his gun after the shoplifter claimed to have a gun in his backpack. The shoplifter, Trinis Edwards, then left the store.

But minutes later, however, when Davis left the store, Edwards confronted him in the parking lot. The shoplifter sprayed Davis with pepper spray and then the two men scuffled. Davis tried to produce his handgun from his jacket and failed.

Davis lost control of his handgun and it fell to the ground. Edwards came up with it and shot Davis to death.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp joined members of the General Assembly and gun rights advocates to make an announcement regarding the expansion of law-abiding Georgians’ Second Amendment rights.

Kemp and his wife visited a gun shop outside Atlanta on Wednesday to announce his support for legislation that would change the need for a license to carry a handgun in public.

More than 20 other states allow concealed weapons in public without a permit. Opponents have said such laws escalate the danger to law enforcement and the public.

“California must be held accountable for its near-constant, unconstitutional assaults on law-abiding gun owners and the Second Amendment,” said Jason Ouimet, executive director, NRA-ILA. “This law strips privacy rights from anyone who has ever purchased a firearm, transferred a firearm, purchased ammunition, or obtained a concealed-carry license. This is an outright violation of our rights and must be reversed.”

The bill, Assembly Bill 173, allows for the disclosure of highly sensitive information, including a gun owner’s name, address, place of birth, phone number, occupation, driver’s license or ID number, race, sex, height, weight, hair color, eye color, and even their social security number and types of firearms that they own.

An Indiana House committee heard Wednesday from supporters and opponents of proposed legislation that would eliminate the requirement of licenses to carry handguns, a proposal that stopped short of passage in the Indiana General Assembly last year.

The room on the fourth floor of the Statehouse was packed to the brim, with more interested attendees from all sides of the argument beginning to line the halls.

Three California lawmakers will introduce legislation to allow local governments and victims of gun violence to bring civil lawsuits against gun manufacturers whose products are used in the commission of crimes, opening a new front in the battle over gun safety legislation.

The legislators say they will use a loophole in a 2005 federal law that shields gun manufacturers and dealers from civil liability. That law, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, contains an exception when those companies and sellers break state law.

Yesterday, the Illinois General Assembly began its 2022 legislative session. Anti-gun bills from 2021 have carried over to this year’s session.

Senate Amendment 1 to Senate Bill 568, deceptively called the “Fix the FOID Act,” criminalizes private transfers of firearms from one FOID holder to another FOID holder, requires fingerprints for both new FOID applications and renewals, doubles the application fee of a FOID to $20 while halving the duration to five years, and increases the processing time for a FOID, among other things.

2021 was a busy year for all things Second Amendment related. Here is a look back at 10 of the most noteworthy events—good and bad—as we start off into 2022. Looking back is important, as it can show what’s coming.

10. The NRA turned 150.
Founded in 1871 by Civil War veterans Gen. George Wingate and Col. William Conant Church, the NRA has led the way on protecting our Second Amendment freedoms since its inception.

“The NRA has diligently protected our right to keep and bear arms longer than any other organization,” said now former NRA President Carolyn Meadows.

With 2021 in the rearview mirror, and the first anniversary of the Biden presidency nearing, it is useful to remember what President Joe Biden (D) has said about the Second Amendment since assuming office.

1.) During a CNN “town hall” meeting in late July, Biden implied that he hoped to outlaw America’s most-popular handgun: the 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, a handgun so popular it is possessed by millions of Americans for home self-defense and concealed carry.

“The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a 9 mm pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous,” said Biden. “I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things.”

Saying current law needlessly exposes law-abiding citizens to potential prosecution, Republicans in the state Legislature want to allow people licensed to carry a concealed weapon to keep the weapon in their vehicles while on school grounds.

If it passes, the bill would almost certainly be vetoed by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, a former school superintendent who has pushed for stricter rather than more lenient gun laws.

Gun sale activity climbed to a five-year high in Connecticut in 2021, as gun purchasers rode a national wave of firearm-related buying that saw the second-highest number of background checks ever recorded by the FBI.

“These figures we’re seeing for background checks associated with the sale of a firearm would have been unthinkable just five years ago, yet this industry is meeting this growing demand,” said Mark Oliva, director for public affairs for the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation, the firearms industry trade association. “The future seems to be that firearm sales will continue to maintain a pace that is elevated from what was witnessed before 2020.”
