"This may be the year from which there is no turning back. Global governance advocates have been relentlessly advancing their agenda for a generation. Since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, their progress has been astounding. Most of the recommendations of the Commission on Global Governance are nearing implementation. The events scheduled to occur this year may push the world beyond the point of no return." --Henry Lamb |

"In New York, you need a license to save your life with a handgun. Under the Sullivan Law, as currently in effect, you cannot possess a handgun without a license...[and]...the licensing officer determines whether, in each case, the desire of the applicant for a license to have a means of defending his or her life ready at hand is “proper cause” for granting an unrestricted carry license." --Jeff Snyder |

"Homeland security measures allow trial by tribunals, assets seizure and closure of terrorist websites. We all want our government to resolutely prevent a repetition of Sept. 11. But for those monitoring civil liberties, a concern has been that, by twisting the meaning of "terrorist," these measures might someday be used against citizens whose only crime is political incorrectness." --James Perloff |

"Gun-control advocates slavered over the new tin grail in their insufferable quest to convince us that the Second Amendment couldn’t possibly mean what it says."
...and then...
"Challenged directly by his critics with major discrepancies, the professor is said to change his story, and the musty chase begins anew. Supporters have either gone missing, acknowledge their own frustrations with his shifting explanations or are wobbling toward the exit." |

How the government is stealing our freedom - a sobering thought for the New Year, by Simon Carr:
"In a wide range of laws, often opportunistic reactions to one-off events, ordinary people are disempowered while officials and experts are given the whip hand. Increased surveillance, intrusion, arbitrary powers, detention, seizure, state secrecy and the suppression of dissent are the hallmarks of New Labour in action." |

"Based on years of watching the gun control debate in the public square, my conclusion is that some Second Amendment opponents clearly advocate disarming all law-abiding citizens. Adding to their clout is the fact that all court victories by these groups are widely covered while coverage of the legal victories of pro-Second Amendment organizations are seldom, if ever, reported.
"While I normally stay away from controversial issues, a recent flurry of letters and columns in the media from anti-Second Amendment groups deserves my response..." --Jimmie Lee Hollis |

The Model State Emergency Health Powers Act (MEHPA) has come under fire for giving governors and state health officials broad power to involuntarily quarantine and vaccinate citizens, as well as authority "to control, restrict and regulate...food, fuel, clothing and other commodities, alcoholic beverages, firearms, explosives, and combustibles.” |

"Police corruption increases as more ambiguous and oppressive laws are passed. Some individual officers act in more corrupt ways, and the number of corrupt officers increases. Many of those who would make the best officers are turned off by the problems with the system and pursue some other career. ... It seems like an obvious point: those entrusted to protect the public ought not be violent criminals." --Ari Armstrong |

A crucial question of national security is waiting to be answered by Congress in 2002: Should U.S. agents be protected from retaliation if they report failures in our system which leave us vulnerable to terrorism?
One would think so, hope so, expect so. Sounds like a no-brainer...Yet, when a brave, gutsy on-the-ground hard-working government agent exposes government waste, fraud, abuse, corruption or weaknesses in security, there is nothing in place to protect them..." |

In the waning days of 2001, the Senate passed a $600 million-a-year bill designed to "conserve habitat and open space" in a way that doesn't hurt farmers and local economies. Still, opponents call it a "land grab" that gives state bureaucrats and environmental groups the power to call the shots over private property.
The American Wildlife Enhancement Act of 2001 was passed by voice vote in the Senate on Dec. 20 as an add-on to an existing law, the Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA). |

[Not RKBA-related, but regarding the "globalization" taking place around the world...]
As I recall, there were discussions here at KABA about the French "not wanting to give up their Frenchness" to the EU grand swipe across Europe. Today comes word that the Italian president and his cabinet are so fundamentally opposed to the European Union, their pro-EU foreign minister has quit. The last paragraph of this article has very interesting quotes from cabinet members.
There are many sisters and brothers throughout Europe that don't want the EU. |

Courts: State rule that mental illness is no reason to deny someone a permit raises safety fears. Gun rights activists say provision protects rights of residents.
"A state appeals court ruled recently that Finn erred. The court declared that under Alaska law, mental illness by itself cannot be considered in deciding fitness to carry a concealed weapon. And state officials say they are trying to figure out how they could turn Wagner down if he asks to have his permit returned." |

"ARMED guards will not be put on British aircraft to protect passengers from terrorist attacks, ministers have decided."
--I certainly hope this isn't as "sucessful" as the ban on handguns has been. (88% rise in gun related homicides. Actual body count still small, but rising.) -- I also admire that they have publically announced this effort to keep guns off of planes.
KABA NOTE: Yes, Bill, it takes guts to announce to potential hijackers that they won't meet with any resistence :) |
