A mother has complained to her son’s school after the boy received a toy gun as a gift during a class project.
WXYZ TV reports that Brieanna Johnson went to Herrington Elem. School to complain about her 6-year-old son bringing home the gun after the school organized businesses to bring children gifts.
Johnson says the principal apologized and had no idea about the toy gun.
Superintendent of Pontiac Schools Kelley Williams says the district will work to improve communication with donors and have employees inspect gifts before they are handed to students.
Johnson says she doesn’t allow her son to play with toy guns after the death of Tamir Rice, a Cleveland boy who was shot by police when they thought his replica gun was real. |

The recent massacres in Oregon and California brings home again the realization that misused power yields tragic results.
In Oregon, college officials exercising their power, had instituted a no-guns policy, including disarming their security personnel. In California, most citizens are disarmed by the absence of shall-issue handgun carry laws. |

The new plan is getting mixed reviews across the country...including here in Northern Michigan.
9&10's Cody Boyer and photojournalist Jeff Blakeman continue our team coverage after talking with a local gun dealer and a Northern Michigan sheriff about their thoughts on the president's gun control reform.
This new extensive series of plans has one goal: help eliminate gun violence.
But to local dealers and law enforcement, the rush to move these actions forward has them nervous.
"When a president, to me, just does an executive order without any other people being involved, it kind of scares me, I won't lie," says John Wilson, Clare County Sheriff.

Detroit police haven't entirely sorted out the details, but preliminary findings indicate a 28-year-old man permitted to carry a concealed firearm exchanged gunfire with and critically injured his 21-year-old would-be mugger.
Each man accused the other.
The suspect, who suffered one gunshot wound, told police the CPL holder attempted to rob and shot him.
After shooting the 21-year-old, the CPL holder went immediately to a nearby Detroit Police precinct headquarters.
"The 21-year-old announced there was a hold-up and there was an exchange of gunfire between," Detroit Police Officer Shonda Williams tells MLive.
She said the 21-year-old was critically injured and alive as of Wednesday afternoon. |

The gun business is booming. There were enough guns sold on Black Friday last year to equip the United States Marines (and a couple of extra Army divisions). However, there’s an annoying tendency within the firearms business community to view the sale of a firearm as the be-all, end-all of gun ownership, without helping the customer learn how to use their gun. The fact is, aside from collectors, very few people buy a gun just for the sake of owning one; rather, they buy with a specific purpose in mind. That purpose, according to a 2014 survey by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, is target shooting and self-defense. |

Why would you even have a gun? To protect yourself from the bad guys? If you use that reason, except in very rare circumstances, you’re deluding yourself; the statistics don’t back you up at all. To reinforce the Second Amendment? No, you’re most likely not part of a militia protecting your fellow citizens from a chaotic federal government. To enhance your firearms collection? Okay, then you don’t need ammunition. To shoot animals? Fine, if in fact those animals are not federally protected, you shoot them in season, and you eat what you shoot.

A state representative wants to allow firearms on college campuses, but others say campuses should decide for themselves. News 18 met with Purdue’s chief of police and he explains why this bill should not be passed.
The Purdue University campus is a gun-free zone, as of now, but that could change. Republican State Rep. Jim Lucas proposed a bill that would prohibit state agencies, including public universities, from regulating firearms on their properties.
Right now, Purdue policy prohibits firearms on campus. Purdue University Police Chief John Cox supports that policy. |

Gun sales have gone up in Arkansas and now more people want concealed carry training.
Logan Lee, owner of 141 Shooting Range, is adding Sunday classes to his range after higher demand.
Lee said many people called in wanting lessons after the frightening incident at Arkansas State University in December.
“Sometimes it takes something like that for people to consider self-defense and protecting themselves a little more,” Lee said.
Lee said there are also other factors for the demand like politics and social media. |

In their final months in office, presidents typically focus on building a legacy. One way President Obama is doing that is by tightening federal gun laws. While wiping back tears in a Tuesday speech from the White House, he announced several executive actions he claimed would reduce gun crimes, in particular, the kinds of mass shootings seen in San Bernardino on Dec. 2.
Yet as a former federal judge, Andrew Napolitano, pointed out on FoxNews.com, “Congress has expressly removed occasional sales (sales not made by full-time dealers) from the obligation of obtaining federal licenses and from conducting background checks.” Mr. Obama’s attempt to mandate such checks “will be invalidated by the courts,” he predicted. |

Opinions vary nationally on the root cause, but we really do not know why the United States has been experiencing so much gun violence in recent years. Are there too many firearms or not enough of them available? Are shootings the direct result of drug addiction or the manifestation of an overburdened mental health system? The reason or reasons might not be clear, but we do know our nation has a deadly problem. |

Their offering is a biometric trigger lock named the Guardian, which bolts onto a handgun and uses a fingerprint scanner to cover the weapon trigger. The pair have spent years tweaking the device's weight, opening speed and secondary release systems, all from the perspective of "someone who handles firearms and may need to use them at a moment's notice."
According to Barido, the lock would allow gun owners quick access for self-defense while preventing children or thieves from using the weapon. It's still in developmental phase, but the pair hope to make it available for sale later this year. |

TheDCNF concluded its analysis as President Barack Obama announced Tuesday another push by his administration to tighten federal gun control laws in an attempt to curb gun violence. While Obama quotes the more than 30,000 gun deaths in a year — omitting that 60 percent are suicides, 6 percent are gang related, 3 percent are accidents, and the vast majority of the rest occur in urban areas — TheDCNF found that several kids, the elderly, and a disproportionate amount of women successfully defended themselves against criminals by use of gun fire.

Mulford’s legislation, which became known as the “Panthers Bill,” passed with the support of the National Rifle Association, which apparently believed that the whole “good guy with a gun” thing didn’t apply to black people. California Gov. Ronald Reagan (R), who would later campaign for president as a steadfast defender of the Second Amendment, signed the bill into law.
Although the May 2 demonstration failed to sway lawmakers into voting against the Mulford Act — and may have even convinced some of them that such a measure was necessary — it did succeed in making the Black Panthers front-page news. |

Here’s are the main platform areas that Jeb has staked out a position on: Reform and Growth, Reforming Washington, Defeating ISIS, Border Security, Veterans, Regulatory Reform, Energy Policy, Health Care Plan, Cybersecurity, Defense, State’s Rights.
I’m not making a statement that gun rights should be one of his main platform divisions. However, I do find it interesting that the opposition party has made it a top issue and it’s front and center in the news, yet Jeb remains silent. I actually did read through all the politician-speak in each of the categories, and sure enough, it’s all crickets on guns. |

U.S. Representative Scott Perry (PA-4) introduced a bill this week that would prohibit the President from enacting his proposed executive action as it relates to gun control. Specifically, the Second Amendment Defense Act disallows the Executive branch from unilaterally taking action to create more restrictive regulations on law-abiding gun owners. |

What kind of reaction were you expecting when we voted on the pro-gun provisions. What the hell did our unimaginative state legislators think would happen when they allow people to carry semi-automatic assault weapons in the street or better yet, when they voted on asinine policies such as:
Gun bans: None.
Waiting periods for gun purchases: None.
License or permit to purchase guns: None.
Registration of guns: None statewide. |

A Missouri woman praised the Second Amendment in a Facebook post for saving her family.
The woman, Katie Claxton, stopped at a gas station with her husband and children on Monday when a man approached her with “a knife about the size of a machete” and pointed it at her.
Claxton yelled for her husband Matt to get his gun and shoot the man.
The man told her she was “lucky” her husband had a gun and retreated.
Rather than shoot, Matt called police who arrested the man, David Middleton, 42, and charged him with unlawful use of a weapon, according to Fox 2. |

Kentucky senate members are expected to consider a joint resolution pertaining to concealed carry regulations in Virginia. The matter looks to have strong bipartisan support in the 38 member chamber.
On the day republicans in the Kentucky senate released their priority bills, a second amendment issue sparked bipartisan dialogue. House Minority Floor Leader Ray Jones, a democrat, announced he would file a resolution urging Virginia leaders to rescind plans to stop recognizing Kentucky’s concealed carry permits. “As we see so many mass shootings and we see terrorist attacks on American soil, I believe that it is vitally important that Americans have the right to protect themselves and their families, and their friends,” said Jones. |

The Washington State Supreme Court issued an insane ruling on December 31st. The ruling was written by Justice Charles Wiggens, pictured above. The case was City of Seattle v. Wayne Anthony Evans. I classify this sort of opinion as Goldilocks gun control. While this case involves knives, the approach is the same. Under Goldilocks gun control, guns are restricted under any imaginable restriction, until the ones that are left are such a small number that they are acceptable to disarmists. Either guns are “too big” (.50 caliber rifles) or too small (easily concealable), too military (weapons of war) or not military (not suitable for militia use), too effective (no one needs a 30 round magazine) or not effective enough (not reliable). |

Under the right of self-defense, the doctrine of necessity and the Second Amendment, our citizens should go armed in public. Let it be known that we have no soft targets in America. Schools are known as very soft targets; let's change this.

In 2008, the Supreme Court laid to rest the once-simmering dispute over the meaning of the Second Amendment. In an opinion written by Justice Antonin Scalia, the court articulated the modern existence of the ancient right to keep and bear arms as a pre-political right.
A pre-political right is one that pre-exists the political order that was created to protect it. Thus, the court held, the origins of this right are the ancient and persistent traditions of free peoples and their natural inclinations to self-defense. |
