The company created an entirely new cartridge that, while smaller than the 9 mm, skews heavily towards it in terms of power. Dubbed the 30 Super Carry, the new cartridge has a .312-inch bullet diameter, although it’s the same length as a 9 mm. The narrower circumference, though, means more rounds will fit inside a given frame, all else being equal. It also means that, in short order, we’ll be seeing guns specifically designed for the Super Carry that are smaller and lighter than current 9 mm pistols. In other words, we’ll have new guns of .380 ACP size, but with 9 mm muzzle energy. |

While Albany lawmakers were looking for new ways to loosen laws on crime, law-abiding New York residents were making the case for the Supreme Court to restore their Second Amendment rights in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, challenging the constitutionality of New York’s restrictive pistol permit requirements. In November 2021, Remington Arms announced that it will be moving its headquarters to Georgia, citing New York’s unfriendly atmosphere to firearm ownership as a factor in the decision. |

Walensky told CNN that, after supposedly more than two decades on the sidelines because of an NRA-backed measure to limit the use of CDC funding, the agency was getting back into the gun-violence-research business. Despite waning support for the public health agency in the wake of its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Walensky said it was time for the CDC to put the “pedal to the metal” on this political controversy. The CDC director said of firearms, “I swore to the president and to this country that I would protect your health. This is clearly one of those moments, one of those issues that is harming America’s health.” |

A bill pending in the Ohio legislature will, according to its backers, further the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. But to its opponents, Senate Bill 215 is a threat to public safety.
The bill passed in the Senate last month and was introduced in the House of Representatives where it awaits a committee assignment.
The bill will allow law-abiding adults to carry a concealed handgun without obtaining a permit in areas where concealed carry is permitted. |

When police arrived on scene, they found a man, later identified as Tolley, with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators say evidence indicated Tolley had forcibly entered the locked residence, caused damage while inside and forcibly entered a locked bedroom where the residents of the home were sheltering while on phone with 911 dispatchers. After entering the locked bedroom, residents say Tolley advanced towards them and a resident subsequently fired a shot at Tolley. |

Even as crime is surging in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom and his allies in the legislature are seeking to make it more difficult for citizens to defend themselves.
This week, Assemblyman Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) introduced Assembly Bill 1594, which reads, “This bill would specify that a gun industry member has created or maintained a public nuisance, as defined, if their failure to follow federal, state, or local law caused injury or death or if the gun industry member engaged in unfair business practices.” |

A group of local citizens called the Vermilion County Constitutionalists have been trying since last year to have Vermilion County become Illinois’ 68th Second Amendment Sanctuary County to protect their gun rights.
An ordinance will be before the Vermilion County Board at its Jan. 11 meeting. A full agenda and information about the meeting can be found at www.vercounty.org.

Missouri Republican legislative leaders appear uninterested in revising a new Second Amendment law at the request of a police group that says the measure makes it harder for local law enforcement to apprehend suspects in gun-related crimes.
The Second Amendment Preservation Act (SAPA) was a victory for GOP politicians and gun rights activists when it passed last year. It was buoyed by lawmakers' desire to push back on gun control measures promised by President Joe Biden's administration.

The city of Arnold this week asked a judge to overturn Missouri's controversial new gun law, saying it is vague and confusing, hampers criminal investigations and is contrary to state and federal law.
In a lawsuit filed in Jefferson County Circuit Court on Wednesday, the city says the "Second Amendment Preservation Act" contains a series of provisions that put city officials at risk, including an apparent prohibition against seizing guns during investigations.
The city also said the law hampers the "recruitment, hiring and retention of law enforcement officers who are currently or formerly employed by or affiliated with" any federal agency. |

On January 11th, the County Council of Lake County will hold a vote on whether to repeal a restriction in the county’s firearm discharge ordinance. Back in 2019, Lake County increased the 200-foot minimum distance from residences for target shooting to 300 feet. NRA members and Second Amendment supporters are encouraged to attend this meeting. |

Republicans are making a new push to loosen Indiana’s requirements for carrying a handgun in public despite the opposition of several major law enforcement organizations.
The proposal endorsed by an Indiana House committee would repeal the state’s handgun permit requirement, allowing anyone age 18 or older to carry a handgun except for reasons such as having a felony conviction, facing a restraining order from a court or having a dangerous mental illness. |

Ethan Knight and his mother were in the living room, unarmed and waiting for police when they arrived, documents state, while Michael Knight’s body was found in the master bedroom. Ethan Knight’s gun was found on the dining room table.
Ethan Knight told deputies that he had shot his father and then made his gun safe, according to documents.
Before saying he would not answer any further questions without his attorney, Ethan Knight volunteered that he had shot his father in self-defense after his father had pointed a gun at him, documents state. He also said that after shooting his father, he had taken Michael Knight’s gun and placed it in a nearby bathroom. |

It’s a question those of us in the gun writing business often get asked. “What’s the best caliber for a self-defense handgun?” Those expecting a one-to-three digit answer from me will be disappointed. I respond to their simple question with a complex one. “What is the most powerful cartridge that you can shoot accurately and proficiently that comes in a handgun which is comfortable enough to carry that you’ll carry it all the time?” Depending on the person asking, the answer will vary. For some, it’s a full-sized .357 Mag. or 10 mm Auto. For others, it’s one of the current .380 ACPs offered in a 9 mm-sized handgun. And in certain cases, it’s the .22 LR. |
