A house bill that's been introduced in the state legislature would protect Hoosiers who shoot someone in self defense and cleared of criminal wrongdoing from lengthy civil lawsuits. State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) has introduced HB 1284, which would require a judge to decide early during the pre-trial process to decide whether a civil lawsuit brought on by an individual or family of someone who has died from the result of a shooting where the defendant was found justified in using deadly force. |

Responsible gun owners defended themselves, but you didn't hear it in the news. Instructor Andee Reardon joins host Rob Morse to talk about four recent examples. Are you armed when-
..you’re working in the back room of a small jewelry store. You hear unexpected sounds from the showroom. ..you pull off the highway and walk into a convenience store. Two armed men dressed in black start shouting from the cash register. ..you're loading groceries into your car. Two men get out of their car and point guns at your wife. ..you’re standing at the checkout counter when four masked men with guns rush in.
These ordinary citizens responded to a lethal threat. What would you in their shoes? Text and podcast at the link. (23 minute audio)

At a gun show in Centereach in August, a table at the front entrance was full of “zombie bats” — baseball bats studded with long nails or wrapped in barbed wire. They sold for $40 each. Beside them were swords — some emblazoned with swastikas — and beyond them, an assortment of knives and brass knuckles. |

The "Moms Demand Action" group filled the state Capitol today, calling for gun reform, specifically background checks and red flag laws. Those laws would allow family members and law enforcement to petition a court for temporary removal of a person's firearms if they pose a risk to themselves or others. Several people spoke in favor of that, including a man whose family member died from gun violence.

In December, at President Trump’s direction, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) issued a ruling that bump stocks “are ‘machineguns’ as defined by the National Firearms Act of 1934” (NFA). Furthermore, it declared that owners of the contraptions must destroy them or turn them over to the federal government without compensation, or be guilty of a federal felony. For now, I leave it to others to address the BATFE’s plan to deprive law-abiding Americans of lawfully acquired private property without compensation. |

On the eighth anniversary of the shooting of former Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other Democrats Tuesday announced a bill to expand background checks for sales and transfers of firearms. The legislation marks one of Pelosi’s first acts since retaking the role of House Speaker after Democrats took back control of the lower chamber of Congress in the midterm elections. Many Democrats promised swift action on gun control during last year’s campaign season. |

School shootings in 2018 supercharged the conversation about school safety — scenes of mass carnage from Parkland, Florida, and Santa Fe, Texas, brought renewed scrutiny to everything from gun control to door locks. Panelists at a school safety summit Monday in Helena readily admitted as much. But as they discussed things like emergency planning, facilities, and arming staff, a consistent thread ran though their conversations on the first day of the 2019 legislative session.

The NRA has long made the case that if you give the anti-gunners an inch, they’ll take a mile. Washington state’s attorney general plans to provide more fodder for that assertion. Riding the wave of “success” in the 2018 election, when voters passed Initiative 1639 (I-1639), Attorney General Bob Ferguson plans to push for even more restrictive measures this year. The agenda includes putting arbitrary limits on magazine capacity, banning “assault weapons” and outlawing “ghost guns.” |
