"Though efforts have been made to revamp the country's gun laws, lawmakers say that the use in the killings of a 5.6-millimeter SIG Sturmgewehr 90 ... should reopen the debate about the wisdom of unfettered gun possession."
"Soldiers are allowed to take with them a single-shot version when they step down from active reserve duty at age 40."
KABA NOTE: But the weapon used by this criminal was fully automatic not "single-shot"; and he also used an explosive device, according to previous news reports. He was also 44 years old and retired.

"Gun Owners of America has panned the Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA), H.R.701, currently sponsored by the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA).
"CARA represents an entitlement for radical environmental extremists who are extremely anti-gun," the organization's website charges, calling the bill an "anti-gun land grab".

"It is our belief that the 21st century will present the American people with far different national security challenges than the 20th century. Preparing for these new challenges will require a determined, integrated effort at every stage of the process: deterrence, prevention, preemption, crisis management, consequence management, attribution and retaliation.
America needs a clear national strategy and a partnership that includes federal, state, local and private sector support." |

For years, Lee Einhorn and his wife had been thinking about buying a gun for protection. But they never acted on the idea — not until the attacks...
Gun shop owners have seen a dramatic increase in gun and ammunition purchases, particularly among women, senior citizens and first-time gun owners.
Similarly, nervousness over biological and chemical weapons is fueling a demand for gas masks, chemical suits and survival gear. |

Bonner County Prosecutor Phil Robinson submitted a motion Friday to dismiss an injury to child charge against McGuckin based on the results of an underlying child-protection case. The move to dismiss also is based on the "observed and evident medical, emotional and personality deficits evidenced by the defendant," according to the motion. Magistrate Judge Debra Heise granted the motion, dismissing the charge with prejudice, which means it cannot be re-filed. |

University of Chicago sociologist Robert Sampson said it's somewhat irrational for a person who wouldn't otherwise visit a gun shop to do so in response to the terrorist attacks: "You can't carry a gun on an airplane. There's an underlying fear at work here that's causing people to retreat to their homes and their communities. It's not a rational response, this assumption that terrorist groups are going to seek you out where you live." |

"Terrorists want to usurp our freedom and our liberty. If by knee-jerk reaction resulting from Tuesday's attack on our financial and military symbols, we implement what these government officials are proposing, then this additional loss of liberty will give the terrorists another victory.
What we really need is a pro-active change in our security procedures that would wave our Constitution and our Bill of Rights in the face of Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist supporters." --Joseph G. Lolli |

As the administration gears up for what President Bush has described as a new kind of war, many journalists are growing concerned that they will have less information and less access to U.S. troops than ever before. Even the use of deliberate disinformation cannot be ruled out.
"This is the most information-intensive war you can imagine ... We're going to lie about things," said a military officer involved in the planning. "If it is an information war, certainly the bad guys will lie." |

"This is how it is because this is how it has to be," said one law-enforcement official. "This is a police state now."
The increased vigilance came after Attorney General John Ashcroft's warning Tuesday that there was "a clear and present danger" of more attacks against the United States, including the possibility of chemical and biological weapons being used.
There were conflicting accounts about whether the city's super-security was in response to any specific threat. |

"the United States should cut back on its massive overseas defense commitments and concentrate more on developing Special Forces and responding to chemical and biological attacks on U.S. cities.
Maintaining 100,000 troops in Europe and an additional 37,000 troops in South Korea is an outdated concept, particularly since the stationing countries are adequately capable of defending themselves against today's threats." --Ivan Eland, Cato Institute |

As part of its heightened security, Amtrak is requiring passengers to show photo identification when buying tickets, checking baggage or sending packages by train.
The rule will not apply to riders who buy tickets at unmanned, automated terminals. But Amtrak says credit card information from those outlets "may be used for internal security purposes" as well.
Amtrak asked Congress for $3.2 billion to increase service and to enhance security. |

Expressions of patriotism are so fervent since the terrorist attacks that citizens who do or say anything against the tide risk suffering a public backlash.
To some people, patriotism is unquestioning loyalty of the my-country-right-or-wrong variety. To others, patriotism celebrates the rights guaranteed by American democracy, including the right to dissent. |

Responding to the terrorist attacks, President Bush declared a national state of emergency, and reinforced it the same day with an executive order (EO13223). For constitutional attorney William J. Olson, alarm bells started ringing. "This is just the beginning. I am certain that the proclamation and executive order by the president are the first of a series of executive orders that are likely to be issued as the administration identifies the powers it wants to invoke." |

"It is regrettable but hardly unexpected that various political groups are using the September 11 terrorist atrocities to boost their own pet causes. All Americans should support a vigorous war effort to locate and eliminate those responsible for the slaughter of thousands of innocents. But we must be vigilant that the war against terrorism doesn't become a convenient facade for an assortment of irrelevant and even bogus measures." --Ted Carpenter, Cato Institute |
