"This bill is all about control. Schumer and McCarthy want to keep pushing their agenda forward, making it impossible for more and more Americans to legally own guns!" ...

"They might well get their way since prominent Republicans like Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah are supporting the bill."

"The Schumer-McCarthy bill is an anti-self-defense piece of legislation that will only make the country safer for criminals while opening the door to invading the privacy of all Americans."

-------
"Duping" pro-gunners? Real pro-gunners aren't duped. Only the "pro" gunners who want their pet legislation passed (read: the NRA and its blind "The NRA can do no wrong" supporters) are supporting this obscene bill.

"You are getting this straight from the horses mouth. Google.com is anti gun! I enrolled in their advertising program recently. The way it works is this, you set up an account as a Google advertiser, it is called Adwords. You pick out keywords, which when a Google user searches one of those keywords, my link to www.valleyfirearms.com shows up on the right side of the browser." ...

"I set up an account, I used Google's keyword tool to come up with gun related keywords to add to my list. ...Of course, because I am advertising a gun store, all my keywords were gun related." ...

"...At this time, Google policy does not permit the advertisement of websites that contain 'firearms and ammunition'."

Violence Policy Center Launches Campaign and Website as Part of Growing Effort to Renew and Strengthen Federal Assault Weapons Ban

"With less than one year until the federal assault weapons ban expires, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) today launched an aggressive new campaign and companion website, www.banassaultweapons.org, aimed at renewing and strengthening the federal assault weapons ban. The website demands action by President Bush, asking, "President Bush, where do you stand?" Although the President has indicated support for renewing the ban, the White House has made no effort to ensure that it happens. The President has a long history of supporting the agenda of the pro-gun lobby. In 2000, Bush was endorsed for President by the National Rifle Association, whose current president, Kayne Robinson, vowed that the organization would have such close relations with Bush that the organization would be working out of the White House. Without action by Bush and Congress, the ban will end on September 13, 2004."

Even gun-control opponents favor a bill to improve background checks on gun buyers

"In a gratifying bipartisan moment, members of Congress usually on opposite sides of the gun-control divide announced agreement last week on what would be the first major gun control legislation to be enacted in a decade."

"The bill would give states cash to update their records on people who cannot legally own guns, and to send that data to the National Instant Criminal Background Check system, known as NICS. That federal system for screening would-be gun buyers is only as good as the information in its computerized data base. Right now, that's not very good. Too many states have spotty data or, for technical reasons, fail to share what they have with Washington."

"No votes have been scheduled on the bill. But with friends of the National Rifle Association such as Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) and Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) on board with gun-control advocates Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), the odds are good the bill will become law."

"Given what I was taught, I have decided to never own a gun. But I treasure the right I have own one if I want to."

"Why is passionate adherence to free speech considered good, when the same passion about the right to keep and bear arms is considered bad? The bill of rights was written and approved by the same men. Hundreds of thousands of people in our country gave their lives so we can enjoy these freedoms."

"On Sept. 23 the Davis City Council wisely adopted a resolution condemning the Domestic Security Enhancement Act, the sequel to the USA PATRIOT Act that would give the federal government power to detain and monitor suspected terrorists without appropriate judicial oversight."

"The DSEA — known as Patriot Act II — would also allow officials to limit public access to sensitive information, expand the list of crimes punishable by death and deny suspected terrorists the right to bail."

"Since the passage of the first act almost two years ago, cities across the country have formally objected to the 'clenched fists' attitude of federal intelligence that has aroused the fears of civil libertarians and made citizens wary of strong government."

FULL STORY BELOW:

A St. Louis police officer is in custody this morning after a three hour standoff with SWAT teams. Tactical teams used a high-powered bean-bag gun.

The beanbag barrage stunned the man, and ended the 3-hour standoff in the 4200 block of Maffit in the Central West End. St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa says the off-duty officer, a ten-year veteran of the force, had been having marital problems.

Neighbors first called police when they heard gunshots, but the man was apparently not shooting at anyone. He did have two children with him when the standoff began, but he released them to police.

"Scott Myers, 15, North Mecklenburg High, Huntersville: Our schools are not safe. The lax nature of gun control laws in the United States is appalling. Although guns were a large part of the founding and building of our nation, there is no need for guns to be so freely distributed today. In Germany, where guns are heavily restricted, there has been one school assault, one that made major headlines all over the country." ...

-------
Here's another pathetic by-product of public education. Maybe someone should inform Scott that guns are already outlawed on school property, and zero tolerance policies are in effect in the vast majority of school districts.

"Metro officers this afternoon arrested a 14-year-old ninth-grader at Whites Creek High School after he was accused of bringing a gun onto school property."

"A tip from a student to the principal's office led to the discovery of an unloaded .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol in a book bag inside the 14-year-old's locker, a Metro police press release said."

"The ninth-grader said that he borrowed the gun from a friend and was carrying it for protection, police said."

"In California, where privacy for gun sales was abolished 14 years ago, there is certainly no 'gun-show loophole.' If a Californian who owns one gun wants to sell it at a gun show, he will have to pay a fee to a licensed firearms dealer at the gun show; the dealer will contact the California Department of Justice, and if the DOJ approves, the sale may be consummated a few weeks later. The same procedure would apply to any other firearms transfer by a California citizen."

"So in other words, the 'loophole' that Schwarzenegger 'would like to close' was actually closed 14 years ago. How much more contemptuously ignorant can a candidate get? Surrounded by high-priced advisers and consultants, Schwarzenegger apparently cannot hire anyone who will explain to him the elementary facts of California gun law."

"On The Larry Elder Show, Schwarzenegger said that he thinks there should be a law for mandatory gunlocks. Apparently Schwarzenegger has no idea that California enacted such a law several years ago. It was this law which led directly to the death of two children in Merced, California, in August 2000. When an insane killer with a pitchfork attacked their home, their older sister — who was a trained shooter — was unable to protect them because the family guns were locked in a safe."

The background check will add up to 20 minutes for the phone calls to authorities. Currently, state and federal checks are NOT required if a customer shows a valid permit. WITHOUT a permit, one call to the ISP now takes care of both checks. But under new rules, dealers will have to call the FBI directly. A Decatur Police officer was killed Tuesday, apparently by his own service weapon.

William Robinson III served in the police department for 22 years. A spokesman with the Decatur Police Department says this was an accident, and happened while Officer Robinson was cleaning his gun. He was found dead on the floor of his garage.

Known as "Robbie" to Decatur Police and his friends, Robinson was 43 years old. He's survived by his wife and two children.

Police say there are no signs of foul play and that two handguns and a gun cleaning kit were found at the scene. It appears that a bullet fired from Robinson's police handgun is the one that killed him.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Many politicians are in the habit of laying it down as a self-evident proposition, that no people ought to be free till they are fit to use their freedom. The maxim is worthy of the fool in the old story, who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim. If men are to wait for liberty till they become wise and good in slavery, they may indeed wait forever. — LORD THOMAS MACAULAY
