"Yesterday's wild shooting spree at the University of Texas fortunately ended without anyone being hurt before the gunman shot himself. Naturally, the incident has yet again raised the question over gun bans, such as the ban currently in effect at the University of Texas."
"Do they actually do more harm than good?"
"Gun bans as the solution to gun violence has popped up again, covering different areas. It would have been nice if such bans had stopped criminals from using guns. But, alas, the results are invariably the same, whether the ban is put in place for college campuses, cities, or entire nations: gun bans disarm the law-abiding, not criminals. Instead of making victims safer, they make criminals safer." ... |

"Many Americans recently lamented the six-month anniversary of ObamaCare, a law that is guaranteed to result in tremendous violations of our gun rights."
"How do we know that? We know because of what the feds have already been doing with legislation that George Bush signed two years ago."
"With the passage of the Veterans Disarmament Act in 2008, Congress granted the Veterans Administration (VA) the authority to computerize the medical records of veterans and ship them to the FBI. Any diagnosis that could be interpreted as 'might be a danger to self or others' results in the vet being denied his right to keep and bear arms. People with concealed carry permits are denied renewals. Customers at gun stores are turned down." ... |

"Virginians are supposed to feel just terrible, we take it, that guns bought here sometimes are used in crimes in other states. According to a gun-control group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the commonwealth ranks near the top of the list of states exporting criminally employed guns."
"In 2009, for instance, about 2,500 guns recovered during criminal investigations were traced back to Virginia. ... The mayors' group suggests strong gun-control laws could bring the number down even further."
"... From the preventive internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII to the Bush administration's use of warrantless wiretaps, the noble cause of preventing violence has been used to justify all sorts of infringements on Americans' civil rights." ... |

"A report released this week by the bipartisan coalition Mayors Against Illegal Guns shows West Virginia has the second highest crime gun export rate in the nation and concludes that states with the weakest gun laws are the top sources of guns recovered in out-of-state crimes" ...
"Opponents of stricter gun control laws, such as Beckley-based attorney James M. 'Ji'" Mullins Jr., believe the report's findings are misleading and called its conclusions baseless. ..."
"'The ultimate goal of the Bloomberg gang is not simply tougher enforcement of existing laws, but new laws to make legal gun ownership far more burdensome and ultimately less prevalent in society in general,' Mullins said." ... |

"Martin Luther King, Jr. made a timeless point when he said, "Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness." An act of violence, in general, is bad enough. Add to that the possibility of worsening or encouraging that act, especially when such action would be preventable, and you have exactly the issue I have with allowing college students to carry guns on campus."
"The 2007 Virginia Tech University shooting remains a tragedy in the minds of many college kids, as does the recent student suicide on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Imagine if a handful of armed students had attempted to play heroes and step in. Imagine how much worse either situation could have been." ... |

"Ah yes, the gun nuts who are part of the Open Carry movement love to show off sidearms and flaunt their rights at Starbucks, Peet's Coffee & Tea, California Pizza Kitchen and now, as the Daily Breeze reports, even at a family fair."
"Fair enough (or not). The idea, they say, is to exercise their right to bear arms, especially in a state that seems to make it a crime to even think about guns."
"But if they really wanted to make a point instead of scaring people with their lethal phallic symbols, shouldn't the Open Carry folks target areas that could truly benefit from the presence of scary white men with weapons? Why are they instead hanging out with kids at a suburban park this weekend in Manhattan Beach? ..." ... |

"VIRGINIA FANCIES itself a genteel place, a fact that sits uncomfortably with this: It is also one of the nation's leading gun-buying bazaars for out-of-state criminals."
"That distinction may have been lost on many law-abiding Virginians, but not on the nation's violent felons and misdemeanants. For them, the commonwealth's gun shows -- where criminals can purchase weapons without a background check -- and its gun shops are a regular source of easy-to-get firearms." ... |

"Here's the thing about gun control: it doesn't work. The megalomaniac who robs a bank, the emotionally disturbed loner who walks into a school and attempts to murder his classmates, and the drug dealer who brings a gun with him in case his clients are unwilling to pay up- none of these individuals have any regard for human life. They have even less regard for the restrictions that ambitious, well-intentioned legislators put on guns. Coincidently, they could all be stopped dead in their tracks (sorry, bad pun) if those same legislators had allowed law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon." ... |

"In 1791, as many of us know, the Bill of Rights was ratified. We were a new country with a new government that a lot of people were wary about. People thought that the government would impinge on their rights, and not be able to provide adequate security to its people. The Second Amendment was established in the Bill of Rights. It states that a person is able to keep and bear arms and cannot be impinged upon. It also states that the people can create a militia, in order for the state's security. The question now-is the right to bear arms still relevant?" ... -------

"Five pistol-packin' strangers recently scared the dickens out of a 62-year-old woman at a Madison Culver's, and she called the cops."
"But now the cops are the ones who are in trouble."
"They'd walked into a piece of Second Amendment street theater and not an armed stand off. But they didn't know that until they demanded some ID and explanation from the gunslingers."
"It turns out that cops can't do that in Wisconsin, and these officers were set up by Wisconsin Carry, a gun rights group, to show cheeseheads they live in an oppressive police state." ... -------

... "Security experts say expanding the X-ray technology for use on American streets is a powerful counterterror strategy. They also point out the images do not not offer the kind of detail that would be embarrasing to anyone. Moreover, law enforcement already has broad search-and-seizure powers on public highways, where a search warrant is often not needed for officers to instigate a physical search." {emphasis added} -------------------------
