America's Fascination With Firearms

"Unlike most of the world's people, many Americans view the possession of firearms as the norm rather than the exception."

"The European and Japanese feudal aristocracies loathed firearms, because they eliminated the role of the nobility in combat. Firearms democratized warfare, penetrated armor, and allowed fighting from a distance, thereby greatly reducing the importance of the nobility's old skills with swords in close combat. In Japan and much of Europe, the aristocracy promoted laws restricting or prohibiting the possession of firearms, especially handguns, by common people."

"The global arms trade is dangerously unregulated, and allows weapons to reach repressive governments, human rights abusers and criminals, says a new report released today. To address these concerns, three international organisations have joined to launch a global campaign in over 50 countries. The 'Control Arms' campaign aims to reduce arms proliferation and misuse and to convince governments to introduce a binding arms trade treaty. [Emphasis added]

But Sarah et. al. say that only governments should have guns. You mean there are repressive governments out there that shouldn't have guns?

"Ben Mallicote still owns the antique Parker shotgun his grandfather gave him several years ago. He says that hardly makes him a gun enthusiast or even mildly interested in firearms. However, as a practicing attorney, Mallicote is interested in the dynamics of the Second Amendment that grants the right of private citizens to keep and bear arms."

" 'Rights are all about power,' Mallicote told members of the Elizabethton Rotary Club at their club luncheon Wednesday afternoon. 'What is the right to vote if not a source of power?' "

"Mallicote said that while wars claimed the lives of 40 million people during the 20th century, acts of genocide against people due to ethnicity and religion had resulted in the deaths of 170 million."

"The common thread is not one of those victimized by genocide was armed, he said."

"Uch Hy was asleep when a fellow taxi-driver threw a grenade through his window to settle a business dispute."

"The $5 weapon from a street market in Cambodia killed his wife and maimed his daughter."

"Hy's case was one of many included in a report published on Thursday by Amnesty International, Oxfam and IANSA, the International Action Network on Small Arms, to promote a new campaign to control the international arms trade."

"The report said the trade was spiralling out of control, with one person killed every minute by armed violence."

-------
To put that number in perspective, from 1901 - 2000 more than 3 people per minute were killed by their own governments via genocide. Most of them disarmed.

"My enthusiasm is lacking for this police-state-patriotism that John Ashcroft so eagerly prescribed for the masses. Indeed, I am repelled by what he perceives to be desirable patriotic expression. His most recent 'phantoms of lost liberties' rebuke will not ease the pain of his Bully-Brother tactics. In testimony given before the Senate Judiciary Committee, our Attorney General, the archetype of sanctimoniousness, dared to insinuate that those people failing to enthusiastically embrace his 'Homeland'security tactics are unpatriotic and enablers of terrorism. What balderdash! What impudence! What treachery!"

"Unlike many of my friends and acquaintances, I have never believed that there is anything morally wrong with participating in electoral politics or in voting defensively. I have questioned its efficacy from time to time, but even that may be irrelevant. After all, when someone is about to kill you, you grab any weapon you can to fight back with, even a rusty old .25 automatic you find lying in the dust at your feet."

"But I've seen too much over the decades to believe that, even if a libertarian received a majority of the votes, the Republicans and
Democrats (collectively known as the 'Boot On Your Neck Party') would ever let him or her take office." ...

While many Americans assumed that the Patriot Act only concerned terrorists, the reality is that the act poses a grave threat to Americans’ financial privacy and property rights."

"A national strategy to tackle gun crime was urged by a chief constable tonight after a new wave of shootings shook Britain."

"The call to Home Secretary David Blunkett followed a spate of attacks in which two people have died and at least seven have been wounded."

"The latest shootings come on top of the murder of jeweller Marian Bates at her shop in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, on September 30."

"Following an emergency meeting of Nottinghamshire Police Authority, Chief Constable Steve Green said leadership from central government would help all forces to tackle the threat of guns."

-------
How pathetic that they keep referring to the "threat of guns" instead of the "threat of armed criminals."

Here's a novel strategy: Decriminalize self-defense, and encourage your subjects to arm themselves for their protection.

" 'We are about ready,' Sheriff Dan Bullock said regarding his department's preparation to begin accepting applications from residents who want a permit to carry a concealed weapon."

"The law allowing issuance of permits to carry concealed weapons goes into effect Saturday but it will be next Tuesday before St. Francois County residents will be able to make applications for a permit. That is because the department's office is closed on the weekend and Monday is Columbus Day, a holiday on which all county offices are closed."

"The department received the application forms from the Missouri Department of Public Safety on Friday and is updating its in-house computer system for the tracking of permit applications, Bullock said."
