"The Second Amendment Foundation has reached an agreement with the City of New Orleans in a 2005 federal lawsuit that stopped the city from seizing firearms in the wake of Hurricane Katrina."

"The landmark lawsuit, a joint effort by SAF and the National Rifle Association, was filed in September 2005 after police and National Guardsmen began confiscating firearms without warrant or probable cause from citizens who were not suspected of committing any crimes. Under terms of the settlement, which now awaits a judge's signature, the city must try to return all firearms that were seized. Gun owners will be notified by mail within 30 days of the court's approval that they can retrieve their guns." ...

As a hunter and shooter, Democrats have come to Schoenke in the past requesting his assistance in past elections ... "Opinions change in Washington. Before the [NRA] loved John McCain — it favored McCain with its endorsement earlier today — it had some very sharp disagreements with the Arizona Senator. In 2001, it went so far as to call him 'one of the premier flag carriers for the enemies of the Second Amendment.'"

"There were two reason for the NRA's hostility toward McCain: campaign finance and a bill McCain co-sponsored with Joe Lieberman to close the so-called 'gun show loophole.' The NRA put McCain on the cover of its newsletter ... in July 2001. Next to him were the words, 'John McCain, What Are You Thinking?' ... "In 2001, the NRA's magazine, America's First Freedom, said that John McCain was "one of the premier flag carriers for the enemies of the Second Amendment." The National Rifle Association is endorsing Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre announced the endorsement Thursday. LaPierre and the chairman of the NRA's political action committee were making stops in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Colorado and Nevada to talk about the move.

The endorsement comes despite differences between the gun-rights lobby and McCain on campaign finance restrictions and gun show rules. But LaPierre says the two agree on many more issues important to the group.

The NRA's Political Victory Fund has spent more than $2.3 million opposing Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
